Top voted post of that thread, interesting pointThe top voted comments on that thread, an interesting enough point that is not being dealt with in these last rounds of purges. Reposted here without changes for benefit of the Slashdot audience.
Last week an SRS user went nearly four years into my history and posted this in

https://www.reddit.com/r/ShitRedditSays/comments/3fkp3m/010212_petition_to_ban_rrapingwomen_sorry_cant/
Taken with zero context, and without considering this happened in the midst of Reddit banning a few subs and /u/violentacrez getting doxxed, SRS users decided that I was tolerant of rape, or beating women, that I was lazy, a shit-poster, pandering to my "audience", suggested SRS users go to Amazon to see what a piece of shit I was, that I thought "rape" was "freedom of speech", and that I was objectively wrong and thought "freedom of speech" was moderating a website.
They hadn't bothered to read the rest of my comments, where I said "If this were MY company and these subreddits were on MY board, I'd delete them in a heartbeat, because I find them personally offensive."
I was banned from SRS years ago (not for commenting, just because one of the mods thought I should be -- that's their prerogative) so I messaged the SRS admins and asked for a chance to respond, considering this post was #1 in SRS.

Re:A service to the community: release the text
I think it would be a great service to the Tor community to release the text of what Boing Boing sent to the FBI as a shining example of how to handle such requests. It may need to be specifically tailored to the sender, but something to go off of might be of benefit to folks running a node who don't have the funds to see legal help outside of
/r/legaladvice.From the article:
We contacted our lawyer, the hard-fightin' cyber-lawyer Lauren Gelman, and she cooled us out. She sent the agent this note:Special Agent XXXXXX.
I represent Boing Boing. I just received a Grand Jury Subpoena to Boing Boing dated June 12, 2015 (see attached).
The Subpoena requests subscriber records and user information related to an IP address. The IP address you cite is a TOR exit node hosted by Boing Boing (please see: http://tor-exit.boingboing.net...). As such, Boing Boing does not have any subscriber records, user information, or any records at all related to the use of that IP address at that time, and thus cannot produce any responsive records.
I would be happy to discuss this further with you if you have any questions.
And that was it.

Re:A story of how women were
No he isn't, because if you think a group so fucking hate filled that you can play Stormfront or SJW and have a seriously hard time telling an SJW post from the Neo-Nazi thinks they are "doing good" instead of just picking a group to hate? Well then I have a bridge you might be interested in. I used to think the stereotype of SJWs being self hating beta CIS males was likewise bullshit until we had article after article like this one where a white male liberal professor calls for the extermination of all white males. BTW notice how he doesn't say white females, that is because to bigoted fucks like him white females are to be given as prizes to black males for "historical oppression". He even says "At least a white woman can have sex with a black man and make a brown baby but what can a white male do? He's good for nothing. "
So...yeah, sometimes stereotypes are true and SJWs being whipped, self hating, prideless, spineless little bigots as pointed out by many gamergate supporters? Kinda on the nose.As for TFA? No wonder this company didn't survive, not when the women were writing ads like "Altair and Imsai mothers deserve beautiful 8K babies" and picking caps based on whether or not they would clash with the board...DaFuq? Its a 1970s chipboard going in a big fugly white box, why not tell me what its gonna do for my system instead of me thinking about babies for no damned reason, and why would I give a wet fart about whether the caps clash or not when its going in a big fugly box with no windows? From the sounds of it they were trying for a "form over function" a good 25 years before PCs would have glass sides so anybody would care about that shit. Hell look at their "PC" design, green or orange with a fricking racing stripe and only a power and reset at a time when nearly everything was done with dip switches....why would somebody in the late 70s want to severely limit their inputs (and from the looks of the prices pay a good 20%+ extra) just to get a system with a racing stripe and color coordinated motherboards? Remember at the time the PC buyers were tinkerers with soldering irons, personal computers weren't even in your average office at that time.
If I took anything away from TFA its not that IBM killed 'em, it was that they were trying to be hipster a good 30 years before that was a thing and without Steve Jobs ability to get people pumped about buying extremely limited systems compared to the competition. And before any Apple fans breakout the pitchforks? Woz has written several times about how many times he was frustrated over hardware design choices being made NOT for what would be the best choice for the user but by Jobs pursuit of style, the most memorable was the Apple you had to drop on the table to reseat the chips because Jobs didn't like fans. of course Jobs had his incredible salesmanship to keep him going until tech caught up with his taste in design, this bunch had "8K babies"...groan.
Weird, I read the same article and what I saw was the same mistakes other companies at the time made. Didn't get in bed with IBM.
Your view seems to be colored by your hatred of women.

Re:Ad blocking?
I think the best ads are the native ads--that is, ads that resemble content, but are clearly marked as ads. Digg is currently the best example of this. There's one story box dedicated to an ad. It's easy to find, so it's easy to ignore
A lot of companies have recently tried pushing that as news stories and not labeling them, it took Gamergate informing the FTC and the FTC updating and perusing action against companies for doing it. Native ads? It's a way to make ads looks like news, and companies like Gakwer, Kotaku, et al., just got slapped down hard for it.
Then again I don't actually shop by ads, when I need something for a particular job I'm more likely to ask people who are ahead of me in the industry what they'd suggest, then I go research the products in question.

Re:Slippery Slope
It has plenty to do with free speech, if you don't grasp that censorship exists at a government, business, publication, and personal level for whatever reason, you need to go spend more time out in the world. That means getting out of the country you live in.
You seem to have a problem understanding the difference between private and public. And I'm sure you're going to go ah-ha, but reddit is private. True reddit is private, reddit also bills itself as a bastion of free speech, or did...at one point. Reddit also claimed they're not banning ideas, they also claimed they're only banning actions. Which is of course why they've banned people for ideas, and treading on their 'safe space' policy, which is of course a feels based policy.
And you go ask the mod of Neofag who was shadowbanned* for asking for the sub to be unbanned because they never harassed anyone. So yes, that was a ban because of 'reasons.' And subs like SRS and Gamerghazi are already trying to get subs banned because of feelings, and things they don't like. There's no threat to them, or other people...it's all things contrary to their feelings. In their world, hurt feelings are "what is reasonable to protect themselves from."
*Neofag was a circle-jerk sub.

Re:There is always a catch. Get ready.
I figure we can prepare. Two weeks is going to be difficult for poor people.
The worrying part is not so much the damage from the quake itself (though it'll suck if you're in an old building on bad soil, or in one of the shoreline communities affected by tsunami). It's the damage to infrastructure. Here's the relevant quote from the article:
"in the I-5 corridor it will take between one and three months after the earthquake to restore electricity, a month to a year to restore drinking water and sewer service, six months to a year to restore major highways, and eighteen months to restore health-care facilities."
1-3 months is a whole different ballpark than two weeks. And several months without direct access to drinking water is seriously bad. Also the combo of busted sewers and healthcare facilities is an invitation to an epidemic of infectious diseases.
Furthermore, this is one of the quotes from that article that was flagged as 100% legit in the Reddit AMA that was meant to debunk some of the more sensationalist claims.
I have to say that I was always assuming that recovery time for all basic services to a reasonable level would be no more than a month in my preparations. Given these new (well, old but not widely publicized before) figures, even the basics like the amount of food & water to keep on hand has to be revised way up.
Wouldn't a septic tank be better than sewer? Would it be a good idea to get one of those camper toilets? Although, where to put the waste is an issue.
Neither one does you any good if the piping in your yard is busted. And the problem is that you can't really know that without a detailed inspection, so the safest thing would be to stop using either one to avoid soil contamination and backflow problems that can easily end up contaminating your home. So get a portable toilet seat and stock up on garbage bags (assuming 2 bags for every time you expect to poop). The nice thing about garbage bags is that you need them anyway (so it's not a useless stockpile that just sits there for no purpose other than emergency), and they don't expire. Kitty litter added to the bags (before & after) also helps to make this all a bit more manageable.
Garbage disposal is going to be a problem in general, it's not just poop. I would assume that in densely populated areas, like Seattle proper, some form of centralized collection would be one of the first things that'd be restored. Elsewhere, I guess we'll basically just pile up the bags for a while.

Re:Nobody will notice or care, outside of the regiThis is according to an expert on earthquakes:
About 10% of great earthquakes trigger a volcanic eruption, and most eruptions are fairly minor, so the volcano risk is small compared to the earthquake risk.
I live in Olympia, and I like to say that when the big one hits, Mt. Ranier is going to blow, and as the black lightning-filled clouds tower over us in the east, all of the metal bands in town will climb onto the roofs of all of the buildings with all of their equipment and it will be the most Metal day ever. Re:For an alternative
Well people can come to my subverse if they like:
/v/completegames. No abuse and rage so far.
The ability to be abusive and rageful if you want to be aren't the only things Voat has going for it, the improved site design and the small size of the community can both work in its favor in some respects. I started the sub there because it seemed like an opportunity for something new at a site which was comparatively empty. Then, because it takes almost no additional effort, I started a mirror subreddit on the same day: /r/completegames. The differences between them have been a little bit interesting, but I don't have enough subscribers on either to draw any conclusions. Ah well.
Treating Voat like a free speech panacea seems like a big mistake though, since it has all of the same problems that Reddit has - a centralized organizational structure subject to lawsuits, need for income, and greed. If and when Voat goes down the same path it isn't going to be so easy to just flip sites again and bring the community along. -
Re:Obligatory XKCD
@coldsalmon: Free Speech
Some time ago, before the Ellen Pao controversy, I took a look at Reddit and, after what I saw, dropped out just as quickly. Hosting a user generated forum and then banning people because they disagreed with some moderator. At the same time allowing such shit as the Fappening and 'humorous' posts such as this. All pilots after the German Wings accident ref. I feel soiled by proxy that I once associated with the human garbage that posted the above. -
Re:How about adult subreddits?
Fun thing about that: Ross Ulbright got nailed by FBI thanks to one such drug subreddit, where a redditor posted that silk road servers leaked IP through phpinfo().
Taken to the extreme, the user unwittingly (or not? :) doxxed Ulbright (that is a big nono on reddit).
I imagine feds will never object to drug markets related subreddits now, as it's a convenient crowdsourced insider info. -

After a string of dramatic events like the removal of the Fappening and FatPeopleHate subreddits, the dismissal of Victoria Taylor and the subsequent AMAgeddon culminating in the resignation of the former CEO Ellen Pao, the recently returned Reddit CEO and site founder Steve Huffman announces that a comprehensive Content Policy and the tools to enforce it are currently in development motivated in part by the media and internal repercussion of "the more offensive and obscene content" on their platform.
Mentioning without specifying some communities "whose purpose is reprehensible" and disclaiming that they "don't have any obligation to support them" the CEO announces an AMA (Ask me Anything) next Thursday 1pm where they "as a community need to decide together what our values are".
The CEO states that "Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen.".
In a top comment in the announcement a site user refutes this claim point to a Forbes article from 2012 where Ohanians, answering a question of what the founding fathers would think of Reddit, replies: "A bastion of free speech on the World Wide Web? I bet they would like itâ. Alexis himself, in a Google Plus post from 2012 (archived version), says that he is "really, really proud of these quotes". -

Re:You have got to be kidding me
Regardless of what you believe Ms. Wu experienced, do you truly not know any women in software or gaming who've experienced the kind of awful "boy's only club" attitudes and sometimes downright literal sexual harassment?
Yes. Game developer Kathy Sierra was run off the Internet by harassment from GNAA / Bantown, the group of Weev, Hepkitten, Randi Harper (Selkie), and Nigger Christ / BLCKMSSH / Teridax, who are twitter friends of Zoe Quinn and Brianna Wu. I wonder who could possibly be sending all that harassment to these two women right before they release their games, right when they would profit most from some gimmick to get attention from the media. It must be those other people over there who are talking about that hashtag that is no allowed to be spoken anymore

Re:How do you represent women in gaming
To rephrase the question to be more accurate:
Brianna, what do you do when raving nutjobs start making claims about transgenderism as if it is some sort of problem?
Fortunately she appears to have been answered already very well:

But don't worry folks, questions such as those posted by Crashmarik all about ethics in gaming journalism!

Re:The bigger question is who is the OP?
i think it's obvious to anyone paying attention that programming should be introduced to children
finland knows what's up
https://www.reddit.com/r/progr...
we're talking about things like scratch: https://scratch.mit.edu/
if/ then, while loops. simple stuff, not even bubble sort, not complicated algorithms
but then you see this in the summary:
action on Microsoft's 'two-pronged' National Talent Strategy to increase K-12 CS education and the number of H-1B visas could be galvanized by 'producing a crisis'.
so there's actually morons out there who believe teaching kids how to animate crude cartoons is some sort of plot to destroy the american programmer's salaries and work options
or even if they don't like microsoft and hate the H-1B visa plan... therefore they should oppose microsoft supporting an effort to expose more children to the rudimentary basics of programming?
because teaching kids trumpet puts professional jazz musicians out of work
because teaching kids algebra threatens theoretical physicist's jobs
because if you don't like microsoft, children should suffer
why does slashdot continuously submit this douchebag crackpot theodp?
slashdot: please squelch this wackjob

Re:The Struggle
The only people calling white people evil are the people getting upset that anyone else values diversity. It's a straw man argument.
I recommend browsing this thread. There's whackjobs aplenty on both ends of the spectrum.

Re: Well, she was an interim.
You sound like a fucking cultist.
Gee, that didn't take long. SWJism 101: Use ad-homs.
I'll be happy to continue shining the light on your ilk. Maybe you can join the Times, Polygon, The Guardian and The Mary Sue in their latest faux "male gamers demand less sexy females" study. I hear that making up research is trendy these days.

Re:To all you losers ...
The problem is like every cause its been taken over by the whack-a-doodles. Look at how MADD went from "We think you should call a cab when you've been drinking so you don't hurt anybody" (sensible and logical) to "Our ultimate goal is prohibition" (whack-a-doodle) or how PETA went from "We think food animals should be treated humanely" (sensible and logical) to "We'll call fish sea kittens and argue that germs should have the same rights as people!" (whack-a-doodle).
For those that think gamergate is about misogyny, or that social justice hasn't been taken over by the whack-a-doodles? I invite you to play a little game called "stormfront or social justice" where they simply remove the group being targeted and you have to choose whether it was written by a SJW or by a white supremacist. Congrats if you get even 50% correct because THAT is how whack-a-doodle the so called social justice "movement" has become, complete with calls for this or that group to be exterminated, this or that group should have their rights taken away, shit that would have sounded right at home at any Klan rally simply by changing the group.
So I'm sorry but "social justice" as a concept has been taken over, the sensible ones have been run out of the tent by ultra left wing racists that have total control of the platform.

OK, Understood (now, thanks for the expansion). I haven't tried Pocket. Hadn't even heard of it until this story. Since then I've asked someone to explore Wallabag (for various reason).

Re: Sad
So the 175.000 people that signed the "get rid of pao" petition are all mods? Wrong.
Hard to say, I don't know how many mods Reddit has and there are sure to be some users that signed. I don't think it's a very significant number, though, considering Reddit gets 2M unique visitors per day (20M per month) and it takes almost no effort to sign an internet petition.
