Re:News for nerds? Stuff that MATTERS?
No, this couldn't be Salon - they are much more current. They had this covered back in January.

Fox ex-employee spills the beans
Oh, the parent isnt just funny but accurate. Check out how life at Fox News channel is really like.
Salon interview here too. -
Re:news ticker belongs to one company?Actually, they aren't sueing them, they "considered legal action".
The history here is that the head of Fox News, Roger Aisles is a long time Republican activist and partisan. He was put in charge of the news operation for the sole purpose of slanting the news to the extreme right.
To get an idea of what really goes on at Fox take a read of the experiences of people who have worked there. Every day a note goes arround called 'The Memo' which contains the Republican party messages of the day. If you do not toe the line then you get fired. This is a bad thing since experience working at Fox news does not exactly enhance your resume when applying for a job with the real media.
You can tell this is going on because Fox was even able to report Bush's claim that the Whitehouse did not order the 'Mission Accomplished' banner with a straight face.
So yes it is completely believable that the executives running this bubble world outfit would have so little clue about the real world as to threaten to sue another Murdoch production - in this case a production that can if it choose defect at will to another station and a production that makes money rather than looses it hand over fist.
Fox News does well in the ratings but very poorly with advertisers. The problem is that its core democratic of poor middle aged southern white racist men do not have much in the way of buying power. Advertisers much prefer to reach 18-35 audiences, gays, professionals, etc. in short pretty much everyone who is unlikely to watch Fox. In fact advertising on Fox News actually trades at a discount to other broadcasts reaching the same demographic because advertisers know that many of the demographics they do want are actually less likely to buy a product they see advertised on a channel they associate with biggotry.
The joke on the GOP and the likes of Bill O'Really is that Murdoch has no ideological commitments only business interests. He is quite happy running a Pro-Bejing communist sympathetic news channel on his Asian Star TV and he does not broadcast the BBC signal which might offend the dictators. In the UK Murdoch is quite happy to support Tony Blair's government, provided they do not threaten his economic interests. Murdoch undoubtedly considers his US channels in the same way, if Bush looses power in such a way that a return of Republican government looks to be unlikely in the near future then Fox news will flip flop to the left.

Courtney Love does the math
Courtney Love wrote a good article on how much money major label artists actually get. It's a lengthy piece with quite a few mathematical (read: money calulations) explanations on how major label artists are getting screwed, pardon my french, by the major labels.

Re:It's not a percieved bias
The Memo is also covered in today's Salon.

Re:Luskin v. Krugman
I am a libertarian
Me too. Niceta meetcha! Course, there's a lot of room for play under a label like 'libertarian'.
I don't claim that the left is the sole source - that's disengenuous on your part.
Ouch! Hoist by my own petard!
But I will say it again; I've never seen these kinds of hate filled, non-sensical attacks from the left on President Bush from the right.
Oops, never mind. Or perhaps I'm wrong altogether, and you're not being disingenuous (faking ignorance) but are in fact actually ignorant.
I suppose I should just breathe deeply and give you the benefit of the doubt: you really do think that the extreme reactions of some lefties to Bush outshine the extreme reaction of some righties toward Clinton. That someone could seriously hold this opinion seems shocking and unlikely to me, but opinion it is, so I should probably back off the 'disingenous' thing.
As far as the impeachment thing... yeah, Clinton lied under oath, and it was reprehensible. Asserting that Bush didn't lie during his SOTU address, though, is hair-splitting of a truly Clintonian nature.
In any case, I don't think Bush should be impeached for lying in his SOTU address. I think he should be impeached for dragging the country into an unnecessary war, in which effort a lot of lying (and metric tons of not-technically-lying-but-prevaricating) were instrumental. Not that I think his behavior was necessarily legally actionable in the sense of impeachment; I'd just *like* to see him impeached, is all. You can think me unreasonable for holding such a view, but there it is.
I don't think he should be assasinated(!!) or even whacked with a whiffle bat, and it pains me that some people would call for such, even jokingly. I sure do remember some veiled (and not-so-veiled) threats of violence from righties against Clinton, though. Members of Congress even, if memory serves.
I also don't know of anything approximating the scope and intensity and organization of the Arkansas Project being directed at President Bush. Nor do I see anything like the years-long, super-expensive Whitewater witch hunt. By all means, let me know if I've missed it. -
Re:"Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility AThe "Voter Confidence Act" was proposed by Democrat Rush Holt. It quires a separate printed record of every computerized vote, but Republican Bob Ney, the committee chairman, opposes the bill.
Joe Conason bought up a good question:
Why aren't Republicans -- many of whom fret incessantly about "ballot security" in black and Latino neighborhoods -- more disturbed by the threat of computer cheating?

Re:Quit yer whiningNo, it's not an urban legend:
"The Road Ahead" appeared in December 1995, just as Gates was unveiling Microsoft's master plan to "embrace and extend" the Internet. Yet the book's first edition, with its clunky accompanying CD-ROM, mentioned the Web a mere seven times in nearly 300 pages. Though later editions tried to correct this gaffe, "The Road Ahead" remains a landmark of bad techno-punditry -- and a time-capsule illustration of just how easily captains of industry can miss a tidal wave that's about to engulf them.
Gates and MS STILL don't "get" the Internet. Now, that they believe they have now finally, once and for all, won the browser war. They can finally drop the pretense that IE will be free now and forever (it's now free when you buy an up-to-date MS operating system even though this is exactly what they claimed would not happen, saying that it would be supported on Unix and Apples forever).

Re:Brill's just the Shill... (for Choicepoint)
You sure about that?
Guess you didn't read the update.
"In the Salon Politics article "Florida's flawed 'voter-cleansing' program," it was incorrectly stated that Florida's Secretary of State Katherine Harris hired a company, ChoicePoint, to create a voter "purge" list. The company was hired in 1998 before Harris was elected to her post." -
It'll sound like flamebait
But man, all this talk about "homeland security" goes right out the window when it interferes with turning a profit, right? This isn't an anti-Bush rant, moreso a gripe with business ethics in general. John Ashcroft et. al. have seen fit to rape the Bill of Rights to "protect" us from terrorism, then turns around and screws a whistleblower for pointing out our nuke plants are vulnerable.
Way to have your priorities straight guys. -

More interesting
Is that Microsoft is already being checked up on for their upcoming music service:
http://www.salon.com/tech/wire/2003/10/20/microsof t/index.html.
Microsoft's idea of "choice" is a button on the side that reads "Buy Music Online". Even if you tell the system "I prefer another browser to yours", or "I prefer another media player to yours", you get sent to the "Microsoft Music Store".
No way to override that unless you manually start up a separate program to begin with. Looks like you can't just delete that little button from the OS.
Imagine the phone call when some irate customer calls Apple and says "I clicked this Buy Music Button on my computer and I can't play it with this iTunes thing! What kind of scam are you pulling!"
Ah, yes - Microsoft, that bastion of choice and freedom! (Well, as long as you choose a Microsoft solution, of course.) -
more on quelling protest
If you haven't heard much about this lately, Salon.com recently ran an article detailing some of the injustices done by police at the instruction of the Secret Service. Saturday they posted some letters sent in by readers.
Note: you'll have to watch the brief commercial to get access to Salon, but once you do, you'll have full access to the premium content.
Additionally, the ACLU has filed motions (I believe that's the right term) on behalf of several protestors affected in this way, but I can't find a reference to the press release. -

Re:alternatives
In addition, without a publishing company, all the initial costs of touring, first presses of CDs, et al, will fall on somebody else -- either the band, or some other entity willing to lend them money.
*sigh* I always wind up posting this link in these discussions:
Fact is, Artists pay ALL of that. When you sign a record contract and get your million dollar advance, that's to pay for the tour. The record company charges you (later on) for the presses of the CD, production of the CD (including post-production, of course), marketing (including payola), and so forth. And they won't give you *any* of your earned royalties until you've paid up your debts, i.e. the million dollar advance+publishing costs+marketing & promotion costs.
You don't just give up your music when you sign with a major record label, you give up your freedom and spend the rest of your years toiling to satisfy the label. Previously, Americans defined that as slavery. Now it's called "business".

Re:Open Sofware Not The Only Solution
A lot of the respondents below are missing Little Brother's point. Salon had a great interview with Bev Harris disussing this. Anytime there is no paper trail, there's always going to be a question about the veracity of the audit log. For example, the machines could be tampered with at the point of voting. Yes, I'm sure the open-source wizards would come up with the perfect solution, because we all know there are no vulnerabilities in Linux, right?
The solution is simple. Touch screen voting. The machine prints a receipt with your choices on it, printed in plain English (or Spanish, Chinese, etc). This receipt is put into a ballot box after the voter verifies it. The ballot box is sealed, and saved for the next few months in case there is a recount. During the recount, the ballots are manually counted (or perhaps there's a 2D bar code along with the voter choices). Anything else, and everytime there is an election upset (Truman v. Dewey) or someone commits fraud to steal an election (Georgia 2002), there will always be a question about the accuracy of the electronic voting system. -

Tell me one thing
If the DOJ is so keen to use this law to acquire journalist's sources regarding Lamo, why are they not doing the same thing to figure out who exposed Joseph Wilson's CIA wife?
I suppose that the "threat" of hackers requires more jurisprudence then the violation of a federal statute designed to ensure national security.
(For those unaware of the story; "someone" in the white house exposed the CIA credentials of the wife of the man who revealed the lack of uranium purchases by Saddam, check out this link for details. )
I'm not exactly holding my breath to see if Ashcroft subpoena's Novak's notes regarding THAT incident. -
The Linux Gay ConspiracyIt has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality,' which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to pedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds [microsoft.com] is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman [geocities.com], spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox [microsoft.com] is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual [goatse.cx] propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail [microsoft.com], which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted [salon.com] on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo [comp-u-geek.net] slut [rotten.com]!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual [goatse.cx] perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children [slashdot.org]. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis [rotten.com] in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual [goatse.cx] terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his

Phantom Offices
"Infinium Labs recently signed a five-year lease on 10,000 sq. ft. of prime office space to locate its corporate offices in the Centre Pointe Building in downtown Sarasota, Florida. The Centre Pointe offices are in close proximity to many of the company's early investors, its corporate legal counsel and the industrial design firm that is developing the Phantom Game System(TM) prototypes"
It probably just means that enough investors have bought their hype that Timothy Roberts can now afford to splurge and start living the high life again. Look for the next press release to say that they're loading up on Aeron chairs for the employees.Coincidence or damage control?

Hebrew dominated media?
Um, the media I see is in English, not in Hebrew (normally used as a noun to describe the language, not the people, who are typically called Jews). And just to set the record straight, there are many Americans who aren't racist or anti-jewish, even in private.
On the other hand, I do happen to agree with the "bunch of frat boys running business". Their skin-color isn't an issue, but their fratboyness is.
As for McBride's religion, considering how religious most of the US is, it's not a big deal. The US Attorney General is a devout pentecostalist. Pentecostalists apparently believe that one should not engage in drinking, dancing, or going to the theatre.
Aside from him, Bush regularly uses religious messages in all his speeches. In a recent case there was a huge uproar over removing the protestant version of the 10 commandments from a Supreme Court building in Alabama.
For those of us who aren't religious, the rest of the country seems to bathe in religious kookery at times... so finding out that McBride is a moron... er... mormon is no big deal.

Re:"Cracking" protocoles and DMCA?
AFAIU, the DMCA criminalizes the design of circumvention devices, whatever their usage may be. Then, everything is in the definition of 'circumvention' ?
For instance interoperability between a remote controler and a garage door is allowed, but interoperability between an OS and a DVD is not ? What matters is the state of mind of the guy who made the thing one try to deal with ? If I make my DVD standard to be a "protection", then bypassing it is circumvention ? Then the garage trial would have had finished another way if, say, the protocole had been encrypted or something ?
Do we both agree that it's sort of hard/impossible to predict by advance what is and what is not allowed ? -

Re:The Twilight of Democracy in America
I am surprised that there is only one reply that has considered the implications of the folding of VNS (the exit poll consortium that gave preliminary results on election nights) on Diebold's unwillingness to provide a paper-trail for voting verification.Exit polls are not at all a replacement for proper auditin and verification, but they at least (used to) provide a big picture view that helped to highlight any major problems in vote counting. (cough Florida cough)

Re:Gee....I wonder if they tell the kids the artists are starving since the RIAA gives them $0.00000083 for every CD sold.
It's worse than that. Though, there's plenty to learn about math and piracy, no file sharing necessary. Here's a taste:
Since the original million-dollar advance is also recoupable, the band owes $2 million to the record company.
If all of the million records are sold at full price with no discounts or record clubs, the band earns $2 million in royalties, since their 20 percent royalty works out to $2 a record.
Two million dollars in royalties minus $2 million in recoupable expenses equals
... zero! How much does the record company make?
They grossed $11 million.
...
Add it up and the record company has spent about $4.4 million.
So their profit is $6.6 million; the band may as well be working at a 7-Eleven.

Re:This is very scary: but... Diebolt will lose
As stated in the recent Salon article, the major voting-machine making companies are specifically fighting measures to have voting machines hooked up to printers which would provide a paper record of votes cast. It's not like this is something they just didn't think of. Offer help all you want, but they're not taking it.
What's amusing is that these companies could make more money selling voting machines with printers attached than they do with their current line. As such, the managers of these companies are acting knowingly against their own business' interests, if we're viewing these businesses as ordinary commercial enterprises that have profit rather than oh I don't know let's say undermining election integrity as their main goal. -

2000 election fraud and DocumentationTake two seconds on his home page to see that (Greg Palast) is not an unbiased source of information
It's been said before, everyone is biased. When it comes down it it, what really matters is are the allegations factual.
Maybe there were voters that were purged incorrectly- we will never know. But if it had been such a widespread problem, don't you think the USCCR could have found at least one person to testify that they were kept from voting because of the list?
It's funny, but in a beaurocracy as big as it took to compile the Felon's list you would think that there would have been at least one honest mistake even in the best of circumstances. For example, I get calls from dept collecters about twice a year for dept that is owed by someone with a similar name as me.
I base my arguments on the findings from the United States Commission on Civil Rights
Is this the report you are refering to? I didn't read the whole thing but here is a quote that seems to corroborate Greg Palast's allegations:In 2000, Florida contracted with DBT Online (Choicepoint) to purge the central voter list. The Commission found that the use of a private entity without clear and effective guidance from the highest state levels, coupled with the absence of uniform and reliable verification procedures, resulted in the disenfranchisement of countless eligible voters in 2000.
But it still does leave many questions. The report is very much a summary, and leaves out just about any detail.
Greg Palast claims to have 2 CDROMS with the complete felons' list. I suppose it would be a violation of privacy and stuff but it would be nice if they were published so we could look at them ourselves.
This Article on Greg Palast's website claims to detail how Choicepoint came up with the list. It would be nice to find an independent source to confirm the details that isn't just quoting from Palast or an associate.
The article said that the NAACP sued Katherine Harris' department and one, but didn't mention any details. I was able to find this page which seems to be the complaint and details specific incidents of people denied to vote. I'm not big on legalise and couldn't find a court case number. Anyone know how to look this up?
err.... I was trying to lookup something I had read before on Palast's website that I thought implied that he was published in the London Times reporting on the Felons' List. But now I can't even find that. Maybe he was refering to the Guardian instead of the Times. Anyone know what I'm talking about here?
Oh one more thing to ask: Supposedly there were lots of roadblocks out on the streets on Election Day 2000. Did anyone get pictures of these? Anyone know of any websites with pictures or specific details on this?
Documentation and sources are a good thing.
I was able to find this Salon article that says 173,000 names were removed from the voter roles, and that 8,000 of them were people who were convicted for misdemeanors, not felonies.
As to media bias, I think the mainstream media is biased, but not according to "liberal" or "conservitive" slant but towards the status quo. Rather than a bias of disinformation, it is underreporting that is the problem. In other words stories that would reflect badly on advertisers or the parent company go unreported. In this case challenging the legitamacy of the current administration would be upsetting to the status quo and bad for business in general. Too bad the economy is in the crapper.
Are Salon and The Guardian unbiased sources? :)

Re:wroooong
Hilarious. Instead of trusting the "party line" from Fox News, CNN, and every other news organisation in the country, we should trust a blatantly partisan "journalist" who has renounced his US citizenship, and is desparately trying to make a buck from his criticism of President Bush.
What is even more hilarious is his biography:
Palast has broken some of the biggest stories of recent years - how Katherine Harris stole the 2000 election for Bush by illegally removing African-Americans from voter rolls (named Salon's Politics story of the year)
I guess Greg never bothered to check the Salon Corrections retracting the accusations against Catherine Harris. Maybe thats why nobody else bothered to cover this "story"? -

Florida elsection officials decided to pay DBT millions of dollars to come up with a list of fellons when in the past a different company did the same for $5000
Correct, and the Florida election official that decided to pay DBT this amound of money was Ethel Baxter (Florida Director of Elections), a Democrat.
Catherine Harris instructed them not to AGAINST state regulations.
Thats funny. DBT was comissioned in 1998, before Catherine Harris was in office. Why would she be giving them any instructions before she was elected into office?

It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality,' which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to pedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
Linus Torvalds is an anagram of SLIT ANUS OR VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
Richard M. Stallman , spokespervert for the Gaysex is Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of MANS CRAM THRILL AD.
Alan Cox is barely an anagram of ANAL COX which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, [Buy At Amazon] is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for SECONDARY RIM and CORD IN MY ARSE. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail, which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for "Felch Male" - a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, "felching" is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into "e-male."

Re:The Biggest Philanthropists
Well, he didn't write one big check for $25 billion. He's been steadily giving it away for quite a while now. His % ownership of MSFT has gone way, way down in the last 10 years. Why do you think this would make huge headlines? Maybe you have to flip past the front page to read about it. Is Salon bribed or paid for? How about the BBC? What kind of proof would satisfy you?

Galactic Gasbag
Yeah, but I figured that the blatant comparisons to Jesus Christ would be enough ego-tripping for Lucas.
Then again, that only offended a handful of Christians. Maybe he's thinking bigger now, so he's throwing Moses into the mix to get the Jews and Muslims pissed too.

According to this article in Salon Lucas stated for Time magazine in 1977 that Star Wars was "just for fun". But as the movie became a pop culture milestone, he began dropping Joseph Campbell's name (in the author of the Salon articles supposition) to lend the movie a bit more "legitamacy".
The article also supposes that Campbell himself (who was to that point a somewhat obscure Sarah Lawrency academic) was pleased as punch to have his name linked to the Hollywood blockbuster. Certainly couldn't hurt the sales of some of his books, now could it?
Ever since then Lucas has been shamelessly borrowing these grand mythological archetypes. Though in the case of "the immaculate conception" yes, Jesus was one of the more obvious choices. But this motif has run through many different cultures over the centuries, not just referring our homeboy J.C. -
Re:Political Appointees
A little about the judges in this article...
Judge John Roberts is a Bush appointee. He's only in since May 2003. According the the article, he "questioned the RIAA's expansive interpretation of the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which allows copyright holders to glean the identity of alleged infringers without filing a lawsuit first. Roberts said that if he left the door to his library ajar and someone entered, "that doesn't make me liable for copyright infringement."
Judge Douglas Ginsburg is best known for having his nomination by Reagan for the Supreme Court thwarted when he admitted to smoking pot at Harvard. He has protested what he calls "insane drug laws." In 2001, he accused Microsoft of using "saturation bombing" tactics against Netscape.
Does anyone know the name of the 3rd judge? I haven't found it yet.

Re:The vast majority of recording artists ...
What? So basically you're saying that the anecdotal evidence being the ONLY evidence is insufficient? If there were evidence to the contrary, I'd agree with you. But without any evidence to the contrary, the eye witness evidence trumps your hypothesis. No matter how well educated of a guess it is, it's still a guess. When it doesn't match the eye witness account of someone who's been in the system, then you have to throw your guess out.
And to that end I provide for you the eye witness account of a musician who's been part of the RIAA: Courtney Love -
NOT TRUEIt happens every 10 years, specifically when there is new census data (the only time it really makes sense to redistrict). It is always contentious and usually resolved by the courts. This redistricting is not normal, is contrary to convention, and is simply a power grab by Tom DeLay.
