Reminds me of ...
Reminds me of the virtual laser keyboard that came out a few years back. Is there anyone out there who actually bought one and used it regularly (or, like, more than 5 minutes)?

It's already obsolete
Us nerds have already moved on to Rock-Paper-Scissors-Spock-Lizard a long time ago.
Been there, done that, got the shirt. -

Re:And I thought Office 2010 was hard to use
I keep thinking that the DM and windowing metaphors really need an overhaul not to something new, but to a logical extension of what they already are.
For instance, to my knowledge, there's no way in Windows, *nix, or anything else to add a touchscreen to a desktop (convenient example) and use it only as a place to store widgets, such that it doesn't interact with the rest of the desktop--unless you use some sort of proprietary software that hides the display from the OS entirely. For all that widgets are fast becoming first-class citizens on the desktop (or in some cases already are), I've never heard anyone suggest they be differentiated, even though they operate differently.
As of right now I use Win 7 widgets, plus the start menu which is a widget in its own right, although I've also tried google desktop widgets and a couple others. I've used the previously linked product to cordon them off before, but critically, as long as there are multiple monitors shifting focus away from a fullscreen app (for example) will interrupt it, even if the processes are logically separate. A differentiated widget screen (especially a touchscreen that needn't capture the mouse) could easily be interacted with without stealing focus from apps.
I can understand it not being a priority but I think it'd be a killer feature, personally.

Re:What a great practical joke this would be.
Better, get a bunch of these. Total security.
And BTW, the medical field is not dripping with dollars. Despite the incredible costs many hospitals / clinics are running in the red. It makes little sense, but there your are. If I thought this thing was the greatest thing since sliced bread, I would have to argue passionately to get it funded and likely be dumped way down the list since we can't bill for keyboards.
The Das Keyboards I could probably get IS to buy a couple of out of petty cash just to be mean. -
Re:Probably, yes...
You're exactly right on popular != profitable. Has 4chan ever made a profit? Or for that matter, does slashdot? (ducks for cover)
Slashdot a.k.a. Geeknet a.k.a. Thinkgeek? Yeah.
And for the matter I'd imagine the ads on Slashdot are quite lucrative to a company wanting to reach our niche, so they probably pull a profit on their own.

And for geeky weddings...
A friend's daughter got married last month, wearing these "Think Geek" T-shirts.
Instead of the "unity candle" part of the ceremony, they had two iPads set up on a music stand, and after being pronounced husband and wife, they went to the iPads and changed their Facebook statuses to "Married."

Re:Okay, can someone please break it down for me?
It's not that hard to pair a bluetooth keyboard with the iPad and suspect the same for the android tablets. You can even get iPad cases with a built in keyboard: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/keyboards-mice/e65a/?pfm=Carousel_iPad_Keyboard_Case_4
I don't find using the iPad any better/worse than a laptop.
And if you're in a job/position where you need multiple monitors, then you aren't the target market for a tablet. But there are a lot more people out there who more or less need a calendar, email, address book, and the ability to maybe write up a document from time to time. For those folks, a tablet can easily replace a notebook.

Re:phone lines?
Speaking of phone lines, can my 56K Dialup modem be made to work through my cellphone? I'm thinking of an emergency use, like with the egyptians who have lost internet. The challenge would be connecting the POTS line from the modem to the cellphone's input. (Maybe this cable would work - http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/7830/ [thinkgeek.com]
Not sure if it applies to all Android devices, but my Fascinate has software built int to allow you to use the cellular capability as a modem for the purposes of a data connection. You'd need a dial-up ISP to connect to, but the capability is there.

Re:phone lines?
>>>what's a phone line?
It's the twisted-pair copper that carries my internet (upto 50 Mbit/s via VDSL2).

Or go to Instructables solar power pages and sew you own. Or Thinkgeek and for $20 buy the cells to power any AA or AAA device.

Re:I hate to be selfish
I hate to be a shill, but TG sells a variety of powerful LEDs featuring:
13W Consumption, 100W incandescent light output (900 Lumens)
5W Consumption, 75W incandescent light output (400 Lumens)
10W Consumption, 75W directional incandescent light output (400 Lumens)They also sell a stupidly-pimped out 5W with no info on output.

Well, I for one was really looking forward to my first Unicorn Meat Casserole. When I found out it was just a joke potted meat product I was crushed.

What genius thought of this.Yes, I want a desk that I have to totally replace every time I upgrade my PC.
Yes, I want a desk surface that I should not eat on, put heavy items (stapler, phone, stack of 100 DVDS).
Yes, I want to pay all that extra money for an under the desk system that projects things onto a clear, fragile screen instead of simply using moding a Kinect or even the ThinkGeek Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard that I place on top of a regular desk.
The only good thing about this idea is giving me a huge screen, like the movies/tv shows always have hackers using.

Better Design Already Exists
Not only have products like this been on the market for some time -- even big enough for laptops -- ThinkGeek sells a better one that keeps your phone from falling.

The SecretThe whole secret to buying gifts for kids, as far as I'm concerned, is to buy them stuff that fits their interests AND and is sufficiently different than the crap other relatives buy. This takes brain power. Rather than saying books, puzzles etc. you actually have to think "What would the kid want?".
For example I have a 3 year old autistic grand daughter who loves picture books.Last year I went to B&N shopping and came up with a book with pictures that seemed to move as the pages were turned. She still hasn't put it down. An 8 year old grand son joined the Boy Scouts and was taking it very seriously, so I bought him a Boy Scout Knife. Some of the grand children are much younger and I find that Think Geek as a first stop shopping place.
Know the kid and shop intelligently!

If you can't find something of interest there that's both fun and thought provoking, you probably aren't going to find anything anywhere.

Re:Now...
Wrong again, Sherlock!
Actually I had the same reaction as you. It seemed like the article was going out of its way to paint this as a way to turn trees into streetlights despite giving any explanation as to how that could possibly happen, leaving me at least to wonder what in fact they had actually done. Amazing lack of meaningful content in that article.

Re:What secrets do the Swiss have?
So is this where they store the schematics for their Swiss Army Knives?
Yes, but they only have to store the schematic for this one. It is the Rosetta Stone of Swiss army knives, from which all the others can be made.

Re:Would it be less tedious to have 10,000+ keys?
When it was first announced (5 years ago now?), I thought the Optimus Maximus keyboard was going to solve this problem. With a little smarts built into the keyboard I wouldn't mind esoteric key combinations if the result was displayed directly on the keyboard. Something like this might, someday, be the solution but at $1500 dollars it's going to be a while and assuming a direct-brain interface doesn't come first.

Re:Statistics FAIL
I'm sure this has nothing to do with people breaking their iPhone 4 on purpose because the antenna is bad and they want a different model phone or heard they're redesigning the iPhone 4 in September
FTFA: "With just 4 months of data, it's clear that the iPhone 4 is significantly more prone to physical damage than its predecessor."
Actually that's not what that means. What is clear is people are breaking the iPhone 4 more than they did the 3GS. Could be any number of factors, doesn't necessarily mean iPhone 4 screen worse than 3GS. I think squaretrade needs a Jump to Conclusions mat. It's pretty scary though that a company that offers warranties makes unscientific assumptions about the products they're warrantying, I'd expect a better conclusion than this from SquareTrade "Research" -
Re:Public transportyou really don't know how big-box retailers work, do you?
they still have warehouses around the world full of big boxes full of smaller boxes full of products that consumers would not buy if they only had access to a different product. do you think any big-box retailer is going to offer that new product?
you are online right now... you can buy anything online, and probably get a better price and save local sales taxes... J&R or amazon offer free shipping on orders over $25.
you not "seeing" a device does not mean it doesn't exist or isn't available cheaply from the company that runs this website... if anything it suggests you are blind.
you're an idiot.

Re:Why Blackberry still works
You can get an iPhone keyboard if you really want one. ThinkGeek will be selling a special case that adds a flip out keyboard later this year, in fact.
Unfortunately it just flips out, it doesn't kill people.
