First, the iPhone does not have a "big fast hard drive". I'm trying to figure out how you are a technophile who wants an SDK and yet still don't understand the device you're complaining about?

Seems I've given their hardware more credit than it deserves... You're right, flash memory. Which is a lot slower than a drive. So that strikes down pretty much the only advantage I thought the iPhone had.

I heard one poster mention that Apple hopes to get 1% marketshare with this thing... So if my 1% coincides pretty nicely with the 1% Apple thinks it has a shot with... then yes, it's doomed.

Well, you me and the rest of planet Apple are shit outta luck, because there is no SDK. You've already invented some 'down the road' promise of an SDK that simply isn't there. Show me anywhere, where any Apple official is making the promises you're making. They aren't. There's no promise of an SDK ever. They've said from the start there will be no third party development of native apps. They are sticking to their guns. Their SDK consists of: "You can develop non-standard web pages for our phone and you'll like it!" As a result, the iPhone is completely doomed. *Everyone* that spends $600 on a phone wants killer apps like Salling clicker to go along with it. It will not be available. Ever. If you can't offer me the same killer apps that are available on phones that are half the price, the product will be a complete failure. I won't matter how pretty it is.

The expungement order requires that the FBI and other authorities be notified that the felonies are expunged. Now, I don't want to pretend that the system works, and thus his records won't show up in the wrong place in the wrong way.

But I'm very happy for Randal. I exchanged some email with him after I was made aware of the news, and wrote up an account at TidBITS. I had written a letter supporting a pardon to the Oregon governor a few years ago, and was delighted that his day out of court has finally arrived.

The fact that this is modded with a score of 5 goes to show how Mac biased Slashdot is.
 
But OTOH, I would put AV on Vista mostly due to the fact that I don't know what pages my family are browsing on. My own Windows PC ran for over 5 years on the net with no AV and just my own lockdowns and it worked out just fine. But silly users tend to click things I wouldn't, especially kids...so I would still have to disagree with the MS guys statement.

The better question is if there has been a change at all. While the nature of major label contracts means that it is very, very uncommon for the terms of them to be public, I worked in digital music both pre-ITMS and post launch and am very sure that bands on a major label were never close to averaging thirty cents a sale. There may have been an example or three of this, and probably still are but it was never close to the statement that "record companies once offered artists about 30 cents for each song sold". In fact, any averages that came close to this figure would only have _ever_ been for the situation where some smaller itunes content providers offered consolidation deals where they repped 3rd party or unsigned content to apple for more or less pass through costs. These situations never included things like promotion, development or recording costs on the part of the ITMS supplier.

Again, due the the nature of the contracts involved it's nearly impossible to cite sources for this, the same reason it is easy for a wired reporter to make up facts in their article. But consider this logical argument: It is well known that ITMS takes thirty five cents on every dollar on sales (3rd hand citation but other sources are common). That leaves about sixty five cents to the content providers. Even if you have limited knowledge of the music industry it should be easy for you to realize that no major label contracts passed on nearly 45% of gross income from their products to the artists. Whether you like that fact or not, wired is plain wrong in saying that "it used to be so much better" - and I'd bet that probably both the reporter and the editor involved knew that was an intentional distortion. From what I know, majors typically pass on between eight and sixteen cents per track to the artists, and that number hasn't changed much since the ITMS launch.

If anything I believe artist's gross revenue per unbundled song has had slight upward pressure though nothing very dramatic. As I understand this owes the the fact that artists gross revenue per customer with unbundled tracks is understandably down versus typical sales that are bundled (even singles shipped with at least one or two extra songs). Though for all the same reasons I can't cite that so you might as well ignore it.

Unfortunately, it seems that Slashdot has a limitation on the minimum number of characters per line. As a libertarian, from what I read & see in the news every day the situation in the United States seems to quickly be getting intolerable. George Bush erroneously said that terrorists "hate our freedoms"; is his counterterrorism strategy then to take away those same freedoms so that there is no longer any reason to attack a downtrodden people? What I don't understand is why the majority of Americans are actually accepting flagrant erosions of their rights. Hasn't the situation gotten bad enough that a nation famously built on the principle of liberty would do something about this erosion of liberty? I suggest that Americans Escape to Canada, but not to abandon ship - this would only make matters worse - but to stand up for your rights.

Specifically, go to Montreal next year to attend the Computers, Freedom & Privacy Conference. CFP is one of the longest-running conferences about the impact of technologies on society, and specifically on the ways your information can be used against you. This is only a couple of hours away from New York & most of the Northeastern USA. Attendance was really low at this year's Conference in Washington, DC, entitled "Life, Liberty & Digital Rights" despite the fact that the conference is more relevant to Americans than ever: after an opening speech by senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), panelists & speakers included Eric Lichtblau (who broke the story about current NSA wiretapping), James Bamford (aouthor of many books on the NSA), and Stewart Baker (of the Department of Homeland Security, who revealed that it's up to people to take care of themselves in times of crisis, and the government shouldn't be depended upon). The venerable TidBITS Macintosh mailing list has an excellent review of the conference last week, one which included topics such as Wiretapping Victims, DRM & Fair Use, Constitutionality of surveillance & privacy (and the state of these in the US, EU & Canada), E-Voting, the EFF & it's campaigns, Cell Phone Tracking, Advocacy (fighting for your rights), and a tour of the NSA itself. Don't just complain on Slashdot about attacks on your liberty, get educated and do something about it.

Sure, give out your efax number to all these folks, and let them start sending you junk faxes - you will be incuring the same (or more) costs than the paper & toner!

FWIIW, I have had a free eFax account for a few years now; only using it for those emergency 'I need to get something now' or the customer/client does not have the capability to send via any other means. I have not had any billing issues, but it was a PITA to find out that the area code for your fax number changed - after spending a bunch of time trying to figure out why the number was no longer working. Thankfully I usually only get one or two faxes a month, so I have been able to stay under the magic 20 number.

1: More Flaming Laptops? (And This Time They're Not PowerBooks!)

The PowerBook 5300 has been unfairly saddled with a reputation as "the incendiary PowerBook" since one test unit caught fire in an Apple lab back in 1995. Actually, it was the Sony-supplied lithium ion battery and not the 5300 itself that started the conflagration, but that hasn't stopped even some Mac advocates who ought to know better from propagating the "flaming 5300s" myth.

So wearily, once again, are the facts:

- Only one 5300 caught fire
- Apple quickly recalled the few machines in distribution channels at the time and replaced the suspect li-Ion batteries with NiMH units.
- No consumer machines caught fire
- The 5300 has proved to be no more fire-prone than any other laptop -- less so in fact than the G3 Series 'Books, a handful of which actually have caught fire in consumer use.

2: a few units used at Apple actually burst into flames [2] due to problems with then-novel Lithium Ion batteries made by Sony (earning the 5300 the nicknames "FireBook", and "HindenBook", after the Hindenburg disaster). While no consumer models suffered this fate, Apple was forced to recall the entire product line and delay its availability while they downgraded to proven nickel metal hydride batteries

3: Before the system was released in a few rare instances the battery caught fire. This was fixed before the computer was released, but this problem helped create a lot of bad press for Apple.

4: Given the hysterical and mythologically persistent exaggeration of the problem with the PowerBook 5300 back in '95, it's understandable that Apple would be hypersensitive about this matter. The reality check is that, as far as I've been able to determine over the past 11 years of following this story, there was one Sony Lithium Ion PowerBook 5300 battery that spontaneously caught fire in an Apple test lab. The 1000 or so 5300s that were in distribution pipelines at the time were immediately recalled and refitted with Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (which were already in production for the lower-priced but identical form factor 68k-based PowerBook 190), which proved completely reliable. The PowerBook 5300 had other issues, but catching fire in consumer hands was not one of them, despite it's mythological "blazing PowerBook" reputation.

5: Apple announced it has stopped shipments of the new PowerBook 5300 product line due to potentially dangerous problems with the product's lithium-ion battery packs. The problems do not impact any other PowerBooks, including Apple's new PowerBook 190 and Duo 2300 models (see TidBITS-292). Apple has recalled the roughly 1,000 units shipped to dealers and resellers, and reports indicate only about 100 units actually reached customers.

Apple has been rewarding the open source and shareware community for a long time. In September of 1994, I was one of the recipients of Apple's first "Cool Tools" award. They identified all of the open source, public domain, and shareware authors that were making the Mac one of the best Internet-capable computers of the time. Here's a link to an old TidBITS article about the award. All the winners got PowerMac 7100s which helped get most of the Cool Tools ported to PowerPC. Maybe a bit self-serving of Apple, but they were setting the standard for recognizing good work in their third party developer community over 12 years ago. And I got MacHTTP ported to PPC in about 2 days because of it!

Seriously, how would you do it? There's no command line to pipe commands or run scripts. OS9 uses a syntax for pathnames that differs from other OS's. You need to know that syntax, and you need to know you need to use it (ie know it's a System7~OS9 box in the first place).

The default install is "everything off". Services must be enabled.

If you have physical access to the box, you can turn on services, install enabling software, etc. It's rather easy to do, in that case. But not otherwise; configured properly there's not much you can do. It's even difficult to know you're talking to an OS9 server in the first place. Linux and Windows hacks do nothing at all, and that includes anything that would let you know it's not one of those OS's in a properly locked down state.

People have offered cash prizes and published the exact (static) address to Mac servers EG: http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=02166/, and kept their money. (If you read the linked article, the machine ran System 7.6.1; Open Transport is now at v2.6.1; the SYN and PoD exploits were closed in v1.2.0; released with OS8). There were other " hack-me contests" as well, and I know of none that had a single winner.

Certainly modern hackers know a bit more than they did when OS9 was current, but still, it's quite robust against remote exploit attempts. I personally know of no examples, but certainly that by itself doesn't mean it never happened.

With OSX Apple took a deliberate step towards what has the potential to be a less secure OS, and even though I think it was a step in the right direction, it's not universally better in all respects than what it replaced.

The Kobe earthquake did have an impact on RAM prices (if that's the right word, in the circumstances) However, that was '95/'96

Way back then I remember some guy trying to sell me a 2nd hand 32mb ram stick for over $100. I just told him I'd wait a couple of weeks. (By then it had probably doubled to $200. Gee, I sure nailed that price-gouger.)

TidBITS sounds similar: a Web magazine staffed by a small number of paid journalists/editors. On their site, and in various magazine articles (e.g. the ones about their subscription model) they explain in a fair amount of detail how they finance their operation.

Well, long before he was the head of an MP3 or major Linux company, he ran a software and systems consulting business called "Mr. Mac". Troll the wayback machine for mrmac.com.

Also in that time frame (early 90s) he started, and stopped, and started again the mac-mgrs mailing list. I know this because I took over that list from C. Gary in 1995, who took it over from Michael a few months before that. The list is still going fine, and after TidBITs (whose server is two racks over from the mac-mgrs.org list server ironically), is probably one of the longest running Mac-oriented mailing lists on the 'Net.

If you are out there Michael, give me a holler sometime... almost 10 years since we last spoke. =)

I heartily agree. I developed tendonitis in college after years of computing geeking and typing undending English papers, and I was then stupid enough to go into IT. After a couple years of that I couldn't type without severe pain. I did my time with wrist braces and Hand-Eze gloves, and it took the Kinesis keyboard to finally end my pain. (Well I could have left computers completely, but let's be realistic here.)

RSI solutions are very subjective, as each person's RSI is a wee bit different. But the Kinesis keyboard is a lifesaver for me, and I don't use anything else on my desktop computers.

Only if you need that blazing new video speed. Most people don't. We keep Macs actively in use for years and are pretty happy. Check out the amount of use that the Engsts get out of theirs in the last issue of Tidbits. Not even every Slashdotter needs the latest and greatest all of the time.

Perhaps you are unaware of this. Apple doesn't seem to be immune to crappy hardware. That said, I'm waiting for the iMac update to buy a new iMac.

One was done by Apple Europe, others were private. This was back in the original Mac OS days, where the OS was much more uncrackable because there was no command line layer to speak with, and the OS had its own command structure that was not like anything else.

Combined with a robust web server software like WebSTAR was at the time, there were many prize purses that were never distributed.

While OS X today uses Apache and have many common ports closed by default in the client, it's more of a target, though I haven't heard of any cracking contests for it. To date, there haven't been any successful cracks not due to bad administration, though I'd like to hear about one if there is.

Remember, when apple gets in trouble, microsoft bails them out.

Now, Microsoft is using apple to attack Linux saying that OS/X is a better Unix than Linux.

Upgradeable manuals are beginning to gain popularity. See the Take Control series of books, for instance.
The upgrades are electronic (PDF) instead of dead tree, and that's what makes the upgrade feasible:
- shipping an upgrade of the whole book, on paper, would make the upgrade as expensive as the original book.
- shipping a 'binder format' doesn't work either (other post have detailed why not).
With a PDF, you can include the whole book, properly updated (with correct TOC, index and cross-references), for very little cost.

Online formats (be it PDF or pure online formats like HTML or a Help file) make more sense for a reference manual than paper, anyway. For this kind of information, the extra features you gain (full-text search, clickable links, copy-and-paste of code snippets etc.) outweigh the 'read from cover to cover' comfort factor a paper book has.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a mac fanboy myself, and I agree 100% with most of the author's conetentions, but, some of his evidence is a bit whack:

He links to the Crack a Mac challenge, as evidence that macs are bulletproof. Fine, but read their story- most of the attempts to crack *that* mac were based on old UNIX and NT attacks, and well, duh! HOWEVER- nobody (hardly) uses macs for webserves. If we had been doing that for the past 15 years, well, perhaps there'd be heaps of *known* exploits. The Crack a Mac story doesn't prove that there aren't exploits, it proves that not many folks know what they are.

I know many people dislike Microsoft (myself included!), but to be fair to them, they have done a substantial amount of work on accessibility. It's far from perfect, but they are at least taking it seriously, and have done for some years. They have a dedicated accessibility section on their website.

Apple too, seem to be taking it seriously, but it has to be said, this is a fairly recent development for them (no doubt spurred on by the raft of new accessibility laws that have come into effect).

Here's an old article (February 2001) that gives an interesting historical perspective on accessibility on the Mac (no need for Mac fans to get rankled, much has changed, and I did emphasize it gives a good historical perspective).

The last time I had a layover in the Denver airport I was tempted to use my digital camera and the free wifi access to blog.

eBooks have turned out to be a great way to fill the gap between articles on a Web site of a few thousand words and the increasingly large exhaustive tomes of 1,000 pages in print. I and a bunch of other authors have written books in the TidBITS' Take Control series for Adam and Tonya Engst, and we've sold collectively in the tens of thousands of "copies."

The books are all about 50 to 150 pages, running $5 to $10 each. They're in PDF form without any DRM enabled. We've turned six of them into print books (four in one volume and two others as single volumes). We use the eBook in part as a way to mature the books: buyers get a subscription to the edition and keep getting updates as we add, correct, and update the books.

For instance, I wrote Take Control of Your AirPort Network focusd on Mac Wi-Fi networks. The first edition was about 70 pages. The 1.1 release ballooned to well over 100 pages because I listened to what readers want and added it in. All the buyers of 1.0 got 1.1 for free.

More recently I spend a couple of hours incorporating all of the changes that Apple introduced with the AirPort 4.1 software update (fairly extensive small fixes and improvements). All the 1.0 to 1.1.2 buyers get 1.1.3 for free, too.

It's rewarding for me as an author to get the kind of quick and precise feedback from readers to write better books and then be able to shoot out those books to the original buyers and all new buyers. It's all a good financial return.

Anyone else think these books are overpriced, considering the low-level topics? Ten dollars for an electronic pamphlet on how to share files in Panther? I just bought a three hundred page (real) book on DVD Studio Pro for twenty!

Only you can decide if any one book is overpriced, of course, but "Take Control of Sharing Files in Panther" is 104 pages, highly detailed, completely searchable, and comes with free updates for that $10. And it's not a low-level book by any means; it has instructions for reconfiguring httpd.conf to turn on WebDAV, twiddling smb.conf to share specific folders, and editing the AppleShare .plist file to turn off guest access. Perhaps you know all of those things, but plenty of people don't and have been grateful for the assistance provided in the book.

One of the points of the Take Control model is that we can write about topics that aren't big enough to fill an entire paper book. That doesn't make them less interesting, or readers less desirous of reading them, just shorter.

It's not possible. You can't do it. It's never been done in the wild. If you can do it, you should have entered the contests they ran a couple years ago, and invested the money in Apple stock. You'd have near enough cash to buy the VA Tech cluster. (OK, exaggerating a bit.)
