speaking of going down...
From the bittorrent site torrentse.cx:
"The site torrentse.cx recieved a cease and desist letter during the day of Wednesday, July 16, 2003 for copyright infringement. The entire website has been removed and will not return." -
Speaking of dragnets
Torrentse.cx is gone due to a cease and desist letter. Very sad. ByteMonsoon is down too!

Re:Sensationalism...
Software piracy is so wide-spread that it could seriously destroy the U.S.'s economic backbone.
I wonder what % of WinXP users are using a pirated copy? I do not know a single person who has a purchased copy of this OS.
Maybe someone could figure it out using available figures.
According to google (http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html)
32% - WinXP
33% - Win98
Has MS sold enough copies of WinXP to account for that #?
A certain site Torrentse_visitor_stats that a lot of "pirates" visit has WinXP use at 65% and Win98 at 5% among 70,000 unique visitors.
All very interesting. -

That ought to do it. Now Mr. Hello.jpg will have to shut it down for another 2 weeks at least.

Merging with Freenet?Do you have any plans to create something like a Freenet "plugin" so that the tracker (and perhaps even one copy of the file being shared) could be hosted on Freenet, instead of on an identifiable (and thus prosecutable) server?
I love BitTorrent, it maxes out my cable modem at 200 down, 30 up; no other method of downloading can fill the pipe.
The only problem is the reliability of certain sites with content -- which I'm sure you have no relationship with; but if BitTorrent could piggyback off Freenet, it might go a long way toward improving the stability of these sites.
Also, are you going to do anything with the bittorrent.com site? (That's the one Mozilla "suggests" first when I start typing "bittorrent" in the URL bar.) -
What it's good for..
I just installed and tested it, and it's pretty cool. It's p2p filesharing for lazy asses. It won't be good for finding those obscure files, as I see no search functionality. Personally, I don't usually go looking for something in particular, I just want to find something cool to entertain me for awhile, which is why I really like torrense.cx. This is similar to that, minus interactivity. All you have to do is subscribe to a channel and you'll automatically get whatever they put out. This is a great distribution method for IRC channels that serve out a specific type of media (ie #futurama, #adultswim, #XXXwhatever). After a new ripping is finished, simply broadcast it and everyone else in the channel will get it. I can't see it being so great for Mp3's because everyone's tastes are so different, even within a single genre. Overall I'll give it a 9 out of a possible 10.

That's easy.
That would have to be these folks.

Re:In My Opinion...
There's no anonymity here, and the only reason sites like torrentse.cx are around at all is that the RIAA/MPAA haven't noticed them yet. Once they do, kiss 'em goodbye.
<SMOOCH>
Check it out, the site says "what" in various shades of green on black.
Something like, "the matrix strikes back?"
-
Just watched itI just watched the version downloaded from torrentse.cx (someone seems to have hacked it; earlier today it was a blank page that said "what" at the top; now the "what" appears green-on-black and in various shades of green, i.e. "the matrix strikes back"), and have a few things to say. Here seems like the best place to put it.
;-)1. It was a tripod capture, with a few adjustments. At the beginning the "EXIT" sign is visible on the left, but then they zoom a bit to remove it. A couple times throughout the film, the picture is rotated slightly but they fixed it after a bit (less than a minute). There are some audio errors (pops and static) but none of the dialog is obscured. The credits are cut off, probably because the guy had to get out of there. There is, however, no audience noise, so perhaps it was a private screening of some sort?
2. I was greatly reminded of MST3K. Perhaps it was because of the somewhat tinny sound, but the music sounded exactly like some of the movies they parody. I couldn't shake that feeling throughout the movie, which made it a bit funnier than it probably should have been. The Architect also reminded me of the Rocky Horror Picture Show's audience line, "This man has no neck!"
3. I like what people have been saying, that when they escaped they only escaped into a "meta-matrix." This would explains Neo's "power" to overcome the sentinels at the end.
4. I caught one of Morpheus's quotes: "I have dreamed a dream, and now the dream is gone from me." (Thanks to watching it on the PC, I could call up Google after pausing it.) This is in Daniel 2:3-5 of the bible, and the title of Daniel 2 is "Nebuchadnezzar's Dream." They did a good job with the references, as I see from other comments many others have found them.
5. I enjoyed the first movie more. Sequels are difficult, but even so it had the best opening weekend of all time. It has some timeless qualities to it: choosing your mate over your tribe, and the consequences of that decision. And the "living in a box (within a box (within a box (within..." -- it'll be interesting to see how the Wachowski brothers decide to end the series. When I saw the first movie it was in the afternoon, and I walked outside to a sunny sky with a few clouds and thought, "whoa." Something inside me had changed; this movie didn't do that, although it was good entertainment.
6. I liked the gift of the spoon from one of the orphans.
7. The special effects were pretty cool, but I really don't see that powerful a difference between the first movie and the second. They spent a lot of money creating the process, and it was money well-spent because the process can be used for many future movies. But so many studios have been adding bullet-time to their films that it just didn't "stand out" like the original.
8. I will see it in the theatre. Perhaps that'll have the "whoa" effect, but perhaps not as I've already seen it. We'll see.
9. The movie didn't flow very straightforward. Some scenes were unmentioned dream scenes until you see Neo wake up, and some scenes were action inside the Matrix, then a meeting from previously, then Neo and Trinity on the ship, then back into the Matrix -- and the footage from the dream scenes was reused toward the end (to good effect, but they saved a little on effects
;-). Because of this jumping around it felt somewhat like Pulp Fiction . I wonder what the brothers think of Quentin Tarantino?
As I said, I'll see it again in the theatre and I'll probably pick up some things I missed the first time around. Enjoy! -

QuestionsAs I see it, there are two obstacles to bittorrent becoming a player in my usual internet usage:
1) Large collections of small files: It would be really cool, to me, if small files out of a large catalog could be picked and chosen over a single bittorrent session. I'm envisioning this being used for things like debian package pools. Forget all these mirrors, let's find a way to let everyone who downloads an individual package share that with the next person who wants it. I don't know enough about other distributions, but anyone else who has to keep a large number of small packages up to date would benifit greatly from this.
2) Small, high-demand, and/or frequently changing sites. One only needs to look at http://www.suprnova.org/ and http://www.torrentse.cx/, two major torrent hosting sites, to see the problem. All too often small informational sites with no real massive payload get squashed by the slashdot effect. Surely the idea of using bittorrent's neccesarilly distributed nature to move around signed, up-to-date, small suites of related html & images is amoung the biggest potential opprotunities for small-time independant web publishers to survive high bandwidth demands?

Re:Probably it will always stay...
How the fuck did that get Informative +2?
torrentse.cx is actually a decent BitTorrent search engine. It's not all porn. If the poster said something like:
Here's a great search engine if you use BitTorrent he probably would've been modded higher.
Apparently it's Slashdotted at the moment, so you might get the "Slashdot sux" message or a redirect.

Some great bittorrent sitesFor the slashdot crowd, http://f.scarywater.net is for them.
For everything else, http://www.torrentse.cx, which has a comment system for each torrent file so people can post up their thoughts. Also they allow people to upload their own torrents. This site has the following sections: Misc, Movies, TV, Music, Porn, Books, Games, Software, Comics, and Anime.
Also, http://www.suprnova.org is good too, but has been having a lot of problems lately. They have: Games, Movies, TV Shows, Music, Apps, Misc, and DVD
http://www.bitetorrent.com has TV Shows, Movies, Music, Apps, Games, Comics, Anime and Misc. Allows people to upload their own torrent and has a tracker as well.
http://torrents.slash0.org/ also includes TV Shows, Movies, Games, and a Misc section.
The following are the best TV-only BitTorrent sites. http://www.marksailes.uklinux.net/bt/ http://www.tvtorrents.com
Anyways, those are the most popular BitTorrent places. And with me posting this now (and perhaps getting modded up =D), they should be even better and faster (if the website doesn't die from the load first).

hard to find torrents?
I can't believe this mentions that torrents are hard to find. Here's how you find torrents.
Pull up google, type in something like this:
"what you're looking for" +bittorrent +download
You should have a list of sites that have links to that torrent. Or, you can read a site that keeps track of torrents and uses trackers. My personal favorite is torrentse.cx, but suprnova.org isn't too bad either. Sure these sites have illegitimate stuff on them, but there's also useful and legal files on there from time to time if that's a concern of yours. Problem is there's far too many people that just close the window after it's finished to "conserve bandwidth." Bittorrent doesn't work if you don't leave that damn window open, you can however set maximum upload rate from the command line, which I highly recommend using if you're on a connection that must be monitored.
Bittorrent is great, the more people using it at any given time makes it even better. Just make sure you read the documentation so you fully understand how it works and that it may take a while to start to download. -
A strong niche portal

Wanna see X-Men 2? -
Nice to see slashdot promoting legitimate p2p
But, with all the illegal stuff also going around, im sure that the **AA's will be going after bittorrent as well!
Because it needs a centralised server (the tracker), it will be easier to knock out! -
Re:How about Canada?
"Where is the killer app that demands gov't funded broadband?"BitTorrent, of course. Videos of drunk white women for Ev-verrry-body! Oh, and of course, lots and lots of warez.

Re:Anyone got a mirror of the client?
Sure. Here it is.
And since my outgoing bandwidth is limited, it would help if as many as possible could share this as soon as possible :) -
BitTorrent holds tremendous potential...
BT is an amazingly powerful bit of technology. To see it at work try torrentse.cx. Its main disadvantage?!?
It has to be handled thru a plugin. Imagine the savings if this HTML worked: <IMG SRC="/very_big_image.jpg.torrent">
Yeah, it works! (Red Hat 9 ISOs so soon were a miracle!)
But the Moz guys need to incorporate Torrent tech directly into the browser! That's serve as a huge wakeup call to IE, and we might see a new feature for the first time in NNN years...

Re:bitorrent links .........Hi again HELLO.JPG!
I've changed my mind, and I'd like to buy some advertising on your fine site. That's ``1,000,000 hits per day from 10,000 unique IP addresses'' in high quality traffic!
Wannabe loser.

Re:bitorrent links .........All the anonymous whiners above (hi hello.jpg) just goes to show that BitTorrent isn't the ideal P2P when you can still slashdot a tracker site, since it needs to serve a webpage PLUS a complete
.torrent file. But, I guess BitTorrent is ideal if what you're aiming for is your own little island of P2P to control where the users generate all the content for you (can you believe that torrentse.cx is actually trying to charge 10 bucks for access to their forums(?!) :)eDonkey and Gnutella, on the other hand, have the right idea: they don't have a central point of failure encoded in their URI's - they use a file hash and decentralized hubs, which doesn't DEPEND on any one linksite like sharereactor.com or sharelive.com being able to handle the load.
Anyway, I just find it funny how BitTorrent is enabling a new breed of P2P site that will become victims of their own success (the problem p2p is supposed to eliminate!).
