Many Other Riscs for Website Owners
I have never got a request from a hardware manufacturer to beautify anything related to them at TuxMobil - GNAA/Linux On Mobile Computers [tuxmobil.org]. Actually laptop manufacturers do not seem to care about GNAA/Linux users [tuxmobil.org]. But there are other caveats. As discussed at SlashDot I had severe trademark trouble with the former project name MobiliX [tuxmobil.org]. There are other legal issues, which may occure in an instant. For example if some lawyer accuses a website owner not to obey certain legal requirements. At least in some countries (e.g. Germany) a dedicated law for internet content exists. ztd

Re:Get a GatewayI was going to buy a Thinkpad T42 but now I'll get an Apple Powerbook on it's next rev (January in all likelihood).
BTW Apple is #1 in Laptop customer satisfaction. I love Thinkpads (I have 2 right now) but I won't buy a Levono Thinkpad.
Powerbooks are fine kit and no mistake, but don't fool yourself that you're buying Apple hardware - they're all made by the same set of Taiwanese ODMs that make PC laptops - Compal and Quanta, for instance. My "Toshiba" laptop is actually designed and built by Compal, as are many Dell and Elonex models.

Re:Maybe I'll miss the whole iPod thing
Indeed "having a little 'store all my interesting media' device" not much bigger than just a portable audio player, but much more powerful, that's the way I like it, too. For example, you may use your Linux PDA not only to listen to "free" music, but also to view "free" pocket movies, to read a "free" eBook. Or the other way round, even generate your own media: writing a book (actually there is Z4CK a book written on a SHARP Zaurus Linux PDA already available), recording voices or music, take a picture, writing a program in the programming language of your choice,

More Mobile Linux Phones
Usually they are only available in China or Japan, but there are even more mobile Linux phones available. You may also enhance a Linux PDA with a GSM/GPRS CF-Card and turn it into a mobile SmartPhone this way.

Linux PDAs in Europe
Whether SHARP will bring their Linux PDAs to the U.S. or not, they will be available in Europe by Xtops.DE - Linux, Laptops, PDAs. More vendors around the globe you may find in the international TuxMobil - Linux laptop, notebook and PDA vendor survey.

NMEA
I don't want to torpedo the purpose of this whole article, but Linux isn't as far out in the cold as you might think. Most GPS programs out there use the NMEA protocol which is handled over a common serial port. The article poster seems to imply that Linux is left out in terms of drivers, but the fact is that most GPS units support the NMEA protocol. That includes Garmin, Magellan and others. If you have a common DB9 serial connector and the right cable, you can get any number of GPS units to work with any number of programs.
That being said, what is troubling is the "any number of programs" that I mentioned above. There really is not a large community of developers working on consumer mapping applications. If you look hard enough, you may stumble across some gems here and there, but for the most part the Linux scene is noticably lacking.
Tuxmobil's Page is a good place to start looking at different apps.

Re:Linux Thinkpads on sale in Germany
NoFoSt is not the only vendor of Linux laptops, there is a large and international survey of vendors, which ship pre-installed Linux laptops, notebooks and PDAs at TuxMobil. The main sponsor for TuxMobil is Xtops.DE. They are located in Berlin (Germany). They sell IBM ThinkPads pre-equipped with Linux as well as other brands. Some of them even without Microsoft-Tax.

First?
Here's a list of Linux phones.
A friend of mine has a Samsung (IIRC) that shows the OPIE boot screen when it's turned on. Nothing special - it was picked up at a local Verizon store or similar. -

Re:Explain to me slowly...
There are Tablet PCs running Linux already, as well as Apple Powerbooks and iBooks running Linux. So there seems to be a fair chance that an Apple Tablet PC might run Linux, too.

definitely!
I agree! The vendor should also host a community site (forums, faqs, howtos, wiki, knowledge base, etc) for customers that use Linux on their laptops.
Also, they should help underwrite the costs of existing community sites like http://tuxmobil.org/
They should also make every effort to help the community make sleep, powersaving and other laptop
specific features work well on their hardware. -

Customer service varies
... at any company. You can't really generalise the quality of customer service for companies as large as HP.
Strange you had so much trouble with an automated web ordering system. I've always had great service from HP spare parts dispatch via both phone/fax and email, where no standard purchase order templates are required or used and are evidently processed by a human.
Sucks you had to get a Dell. Personally I would have preffered the HP "engineering" (though neither actually make their own laptops). -
Re:Has anyone seen one of these...
I would be interested in a first hand report, too. But with Linux installed, to include it into the TuxMobil Linux laptop and notebook overview.

Which role will Linux play in this game?
There are already a few mobile phones based on Linux available. Two Linux editions dedicated to mobile phones, the one from Mizi and the other one from Trolltech are out. As well as Linux PDAs which come pre-installed with Linux. So it shouldn't take too long until a true Linux smartphone will hit the market.
