Re:Argh! (was Re:jumped the shark? )Duh, of course not. I'm talking about this 'dot right 'ere. The slashdot. Mos Slashdot airport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
(yeah I should finish up on that UFie wars thing. Thing is I've stopped for such a long time writing it, I can't seem to be inspired to pen down something disorganized and cool and finish the story... *sigh* Also, I have been away from userfriendly for so long, I would definately need some time to adjust to the crazy people that comment on the stories. Oh. to UFies that happen onto this: No I haven't forgotten you. I'll probably be moseying along your way soon. Watch out... I'll be lurking...)

Well, Iliad has weighed in on the subject...

Re:surround sound?
LOL. You forgot a few things: the screen displays green characters on a black background., with a huge blinking cursor.
And the monitor displays 40 characters per line.
This new OS featured in User Friendly some time ago.

Re:Short-term memory gone?
Yes, but there are new developments... specifically, UserFriendly's take on the matter. Clearly this is enough for
/. to post the story again... -

Re:Technobabble...
A song by Voltaire springs to mind. I first discovered this song in a prior
/. post, although I can't seem to remember what it was. He's got a few other ST-related songs that you'll find if you scroll down sufficiently. They range from highly amusing to highly twisted.
On a quasi-related note, I was watching TNG last night on the Star Trek & White Trash network, and I happened upon an episode from the first season, called "Justice". In this episode, Wesley is condemned to death for falling into some flowers on a planet ruled by half-naked nymphomaniac hippie love-children. It made me realize just how much the show managed to improve over the years.
As for you, Wil, I really gotta hand it to you. I remember in your interview, you said that you had little to no say over the lines you were given. Watching that episode, it became clear to me that whoever wrote the script either didn't realize you were over the age of ten, or rather was himself somehow spawned on a rockbed, skipping adolescence entirely. I've done some improv and other acting through college myself, and one of the most difficult things for a young actor to do is to swallow his pride and follow his director, however inane that direction might be. Personally, I think you did a terrific job with what you were given. I've been in that position on stage plays, with all my friends and family sitting in the audience, waiting for them to pounce on me later for something that was the product of poor writing/direction.
I'll admit, when I first watched TNG as a relatively wee lad, I didn't much like Wesley's character. Still, I did know the difference between actor and character, and I was secretly jealous as hell, watching someone who was only a few years older than me and got to work on Star Trek!! I was also pleased to see the writers wise up and let Wesley start kicking some ass in later episodes, culminating with his eventual transubstantiation to deity-hood with an intergalactic "elder on the hill". I was kinda scratching my head at that one for a while, but concluded that it was a better way to go than being killed by a an greasy sentient Hefty bag in the middle of a living puddle of muck, as was the case with Denise Crosby. Best, I can figure from the special effects, the cause of death was "fatal birthmark on face".
Anyway, it's always interesting to see how it was for you on the show, especially since you're the member of the cast to which most /.-ers can most easily relate. And I'm pleased to see you popping up in User Friendly these days. Will wonders never cease...

Re:300lb gorilla?
What a lightweight!
I think that was the point. The RIAA is a 300lb gorilla that thinks it is an 800lb gorilla. If it doesn't be careful it is going to get squished by a REAL 800lb gorilla. I have this vision in my head of one of those little rat dogs barking at your heels trying to intimidate you when I think of the RIAA trying to influence one of these huge telecommunications providers. They're practically invincible! Nothing can ever bring down AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, SBC, Worldcom... err.. hmm.. on second thought, forget it. Maybe the RIAA just needs to sick auditors on them. -
maybe...
...just maybe the folks at userfriendly.org did a strip not only inspiring laughter but also envisioning the future with this piece...

Re:Excellent news

:) Thumbs up for userfriendly! -
This is great but...
I am sure this is the start of a huge slew of lawsuits. UserFriendly had a strip about this on Sunday. You can view it here. It raises an interesting point. The comic implies that anyone with a big enough footprint can ignore/swat the RIAA if they want.
That said, I think that the banning of the RIAA from networks is a start. Now they need to ban the spoofers and companies like MediaDefender who spend all of their bandwidth downloading files from YOUR computer to keep other people off.

Re:Am I the only one ..
The deal with Pitr is hardly racist. He is a perfect fit among the cast, except for the fact that his native language is russian.
No it isn't - Pitr is a native english speaker who thinks that to become an evil overlord, one must speak with a russian accent. He doesn't understand russian at all. (oh gawd, not that strip...) -
The ArchiveI recently re-read the series, from the beginning (up to May this year, when it all started to get too close to today). Here's the link to the archive - but beware - this can really screw up your productivity!
UF is not as amusing as it has been, but it's generally nice, intelligent and witty. What more do you need?
One of the best strips was from September last year
Tom.

It's the 'Dust Puppy,' born from the dust and bits of other things that were inside of a server.

Re:Two thoughts on thisEveryone seems to be missing:
Bruno and Sexy Losers (talk about opposites) and User Friendly. Bruno in particular has several "dead trees" editions available at the moody cow cafe (link on page), and definitely tells a story better paced than MT (not to diss Piro too much, I like MT just fine). Chris Baldwin is a hella nice guy to boot.

Re:Please don't allow click-through.
I am not a lawyer. Please click here to accept that. Otherwise you are not allowed to read this post.
Back to my previous speaker: Agreed.
What if book gives you bad advise? Can you sue the author?
Do I have to explicitly accept anything when buying in a shop?
Please also consider other jurisdictions. I read that click-wrap licenses here in Germany are considered a one-sided statement, not an agreement or even contract.
Another big reason against click-wrap licenses: Almost nobody reads them. Considering that, claiming that the user agreed to them by clicking "OK" or checking "Yes, I have read it" is unfair to the user at best, simply wrong and a lie at worst. This is the main reason why I reject click-wrap licenses.
(Thinking of it, my software happens to have a click-wrap license, because it's the default in the installer. I think I will follow my own argument and remove it.)
As for "other media": It is only a matter of time until the RIAA and MPAA force authorized players to let the user agree to a contract for the music he listens to. I don't want to sign a contract to listen to orinary music! -

Userfriendly link for those who didn't see it
:)
A tragic irony isn't it?
I wonder if we can start a campaign to keep the RIAA DoSed off the net. Not that I'd ever condone such a thing, but there are times when a little net abuse is so poetic. -

phat pr0n archives
I did not come up with the following, but found it somewhere in here.
Our yellow sun yields to the dark
as I begin my web based lark
Flowing, turning, through the pipe
I grep for text and dump the hype...
But as I ride the fiber trail
I test my faith as I read my mail,
Even as my bandwidth fattens,
I question life and 1-click patents...
Although I ask, and though I query,
I know the truth, I grock the theory
Life is a multimedia of sins
so he who collects the most pr0n wins.
