Re:I can't stand it
On a decent number of systems I've been using a UserScript (aka greasemonkey script) that gives me the original white/blue G, but with this new even more hideous favicon I now compulsively install the script on every computer I touch: the new one is such an offensive eye-sore in the tab-bar.

Google cache diving
Looks like at least some content is still in Google's cache, those looking to salvage their journals should act quickly.
You can limit google's search results to a particular site by using the "site:domainname.com" search term (example) and then click the "Cached" links of each result to see Google's copy.
There's also a Greasemonkey script for Firefox that can automatically add Google Cache links next to page links, so you can navigate from one cached page to another easier.

Re:Addons
Privoxy is a great improvement over "bare" browsing (no nekkid jokes!
:-P), but I found I could not live without the Firefox extensions NoScript, Greasemonkey*, and Stylish**.The fast JavaScript engine is sexy, but Firefox will have that soon (I know it's in the 3.1 beta).
* Slashdot Sidebar Toggle, Slashdot Expandable Comment Tree v2, and Yousable TubeFix are my favs, see http://userscripts.org/users/14832
** slashdot tag removal, anyone? -
Re:Easy way round it, if you really want it
Thats nothing there are are at least 4 other ways to view the actual page:
view it over ssh
view it at the alternate address
a grease monkeys script
an addon
The fact that the ISPs didn't even look at what happened last time somebody used a transparent proxy to proxy Wikipedia doesn't inspire much confidence. -
Re:So Where is it Now?
You have to select, and then click. I'm sorry, but that's just way too much work.
I just use a greasemonkey script (probably the same one those students probably used, that they probably just compiled with the greasemonkey-firefox extension compiler). With it, you can check if the book/audiobook/movie is on bittorrent, but you can also check if it's at your local public library, at your local competing bookstore (assuming they display their local inventory online -- like Borders does), in your local friends personal library (assuming you have a friend or two who display their personal inventory of books on a web page), and once set up -- you don't have to do any of that selecting middle-clicking BS.

Re:So Where is it Now?
Greasemonkey has a ton of these kinds of add-ons for FF. I don't see how they are any different. Visit IMDB, find a movie, click on the Mininova link, and get a torrent search for it (by imdb number, even).
You can also get them for LastFM searches and MusicBrainz searches -

Re:Terrible
Wow. A "minority" happy instead of the masses? Only that "minority" will be using this newfound freedom to... wait for it... bring new and hopefully better products for the masses. Yes, Google took a risk by making some slight modifications to the UI. But if the end result is a better environment for the developers to work with, why would you complain? Imagine, say, if Microsoft applied some changes to the Windows UI that included moving the start button to the right because they'd realized that in doing so there would be a significant benefit for programmers everywhere. Yeah. Those jerks.
Anyways, just use Greasemonkey and the iGoogle Sidebar Collapse script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/30414
-
Yes, but it's an easy fix
Assuming that you are running a browser that works with greasemonkey, you just need to install Rockmaster's iGoogle Sidebar Collapse - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/30414 And you can make it go away or come back whenever you want it.
-
Im a big fan of
less complaining and more solutions. I was forced into the "new" igoogle just like everyone else and to my shegrin I found no option to toggle on/off or revert just like everyone else. Then less than 3 minutes after I decided that it sucked I found the "rockmaster's igoogle sidebar collapse" userscript here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/30414 and I stopped bitching unlike everyone else. Enjoy.

Re:As a non-american...
Which is why I watch YouTube on my TV. I installed a GreaseMonkey Script that will send the URL of a YouTube video to Xbox Media Center. After a little bit of caching, the movie plays.
So you get to watch it on your TV in crappy YouTube quality instead... great...

Re:Try the higher quality YouTube
&fmt=18 would be a better option. It defaults to higher quality, but retains the option to view in standard if the viewer prefers.
FWIW, people can change the Youtube default to higher quality in their account settings. &fmt=18 (or GreaseMonkey Script*) are still useful as people like myself haven't bothered to set up an account, or may not be aware of the option.
* NB I haven't used and therefore can't vouch for that script.

I use the following greasemonkey script to force all youtube pages to high quality

Greasemonkey is awesome for little things like that.

Re:Flash sucks
First off, I think Slashcode ate some tags in your post.
On topic: for YouTube and other embedded video, one can try one of the few bazillion "play this video using embedded MPlayer/Media Player/QuickTime/VLC/whatever" Greasemonkey scripts over on userscripts.org. That is, if you use a Mozilla-based browser.

Re:This only punishes the foolish
Ads in gmail? Even legitimate users don't have those.

Re:Semi-OT

Re:Is that so?
Seriously, have you tried to manage a gmail account with several hundred of labels?
No. Granted, I only have about 300k messages, so I still get by with a few dozen labels...
Maybe you should start to figure out combinatorial uses of labels. That is, make each path component a label and then search by multiple components.
With a real hierarchical organization (read folder) it can be done
Well, then you'll be happy to hear about "Folders4Gmail"...

I hope I can save you the time of looking for the latest dev version that installs and works without problems in RC1...

The current version available from mozilla.org refuses to install. You can install the dev version without having to turn off 'compatibility' checking.
I just can't live without "Disable Text Ads" from Userscripts.org. Getting rid of IntelliTXT, Adbrite et al, really makes
the pages safe to mouse-over again! Script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/3637 -
Re:New PHP features are great and all but....
That will means developers will start using unicode only to find scattered lines of code throughout the app doesn't work as the core function it uses doesn't support unicode. The overhead of keeping track of which functions do and don't support unicode will be a nightmare.
Dude, it's already a nightmare. For my employer, I had to move from MySQL 4.0 to 4.1 or higher, as well as move into UTF-8 land with PHP. Anyone who has done this knows that's a double-whammy, as MySQL had a huge shift regarding this stuff with the move to 4.1. Going to PHP's page on which functions need to be replaced is woefully incomplete. You cannot just substitute the functions they mention. There are dozens of others that have problems with multibyte text, and they're not flagged at all. I took it upon myself to create a Greasemonkey script that will flag the dangerous functions in PHP's online manual. But even still, a lot of it is educated guesswork because I can't program at the level they do, so reviewing their source code is grueling for me.
To be honest, this is one thing that the Perl team got right. I don't know how painful it was for them, but for me, UTF-8 just worked in Perl. I wish PHP could reproduce that, but it's already too late. The best we can hope for is that they keep working hard and work well.

Re:OH MY GOD !!
This already exists via this Grease Monkey script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/11218
You can now see all photos of your friends (even if they were taken by someone else and marked for friends only). -
Re:Finally somebody makes sense of it allClosed source yes, but they do produce academic papers on most of their stuff, and work to open specifications (like actual html or at least good enough for cross browser, long before ms). Minor interface tweaks are fairly easy a quick search gives better gmail ( bunch of userscripts ) , gives encryption.
Your email is still on their server, if they give you a millions options it costs them lots of money, and at heart they are still a company, if you want more customisation that gmail offers, you can always use POP/IMAP (i think the same goes for hotmail) and do the processing on your side (that way they dont really care about how much you customise the interface).

Why? Two words: Roland Piquepaille
Notorious 'splogger' who still gets stories on
/. from time to time.
He even has a Greasemonkey script created to 'strip out' his /. stories.
Because of Roland and the anger /.ers have at him and his 'stories' surely lead the editors to a 'horse's mouth' approach when editing stories: only stories from well-known for-profit media outlets will be linked to--who cares what Joe Schmoe has to say on the matter (even if he does have a low /. UID) :P ....
Face it...Slashdot has (already) sold out. They know their 3rd party ads are being blocked (I do as I'm not a CTO who would be interested in them) so they let the 'slashvertisements' that come their way through that tout the latest and greatest tech gadgets. I ignore those 'stories' as well.... -

Re:why are all facebook widgets so retarded?
They let the highschoolers and world in.
The reason it's like a second grade class room is because majority of users are of that mentality now. Just look at most of the "groups" now. Maybe they existed and I didn't notice before but all my groups were rather sane, now they're "IF U JOIN THIS GRUP WORLD PEACE WILL START!"
I've been on facebook since the beginning. And every minor improvement seemed to rock. They added photos. I was able to share photos in one place with most of my friends. I could invite friends over to a party with out having to e-mail every one. Yes, sometimes in college you don't get the opportunity to SEE all your friends every day.
And then the flood gates opened. The Developer thread was flooded with "HEAY I LOVE FACEBOOK CAN U MKE IT SO MUSIC PLAYS LIKE MYSPACE." People would kindly remind them that the whole thread was FOR developers. People could make 3rd party apps and it seemed pretty good because all the 3rd party apps were external. Then came the day that they let those 3rd party apps on everyones website. Then it just went to hell.
Thankfully Grease Monkey and scripts like:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/11992
This exist.
Which is why I maintain 2 accounts. My 'professional' account. Uses my work address. All my college friends and people I know well. You can't find it anywhere. You can't search for it by name. Even if you know me I have to add you. Then my "Hi I just met you at the bar and I'm going to add you" account. Basic info. Searchable. Etc. -
Re:Manuscript
Ask, and ye shall receive. Just add Greasemonkey and stir.
Userscripts is also your friend if you're tired of Roland, want more screen real estate, or miss BSD (though I feel it's time I uninstalled that last script, it's kind of moot when there's nothing new there, mostly all of the time.
The scripts can also work in Opera (haven't tested the mentioned ones, though), and there are plugins for IE and Safari (though not the Windows beta) to be found online. HTH :) -
