Stylish Dark
Got my hopes up, I thought maybe they were testing a black background instead of white. I have been using a combination of the Stylish Add-on and the Dark Fusion style from userstyles.org to achieve this for quite some time now. But, it would be nice to be able to set this right inside of Google's Options.

This seems to work pretty well for me:

I wish more websites were designed for wide screen
Lots of websites limit their width to, say, 1024 pixels. Other websites, like this one, extend across the entire page, but don't wrap text which makes them hard to read.
I wish more websites would allow their contents to wrap into two or more columns, like magazines do. Here, for instance, is a user style to wrap Slashdot comments into two columns.

Re: And they wonder why I block ads...
I use both. So I use Adblock+ AND I use mvps.
I use mvps as a basis for my own DNS server that I run. That way I do not only block the seperate site on mvps that I like blocked, I also can add sites that mvps doesn't block (I block facebook).I also see sites that my provider blocks (TPB among others) without the need to give even more data to others like Google (DNS server 8.8.8.8).
Next to that I also use Adblock+ that will filter out a lot more stuff.
If you rely on only one line of defence, you are very weak. use at least two.On sites that I visit very often, I use userstyles so I do not see a lot of the rubbish some site. And for YouTube I use Youtube Center and Google Image gets usable again with Old Google Image Search
So do not look for solutions in one place. Use different tools for different reasons, even if they overlap a lot.

Personal CSS files can be the answer
If the majority of your marketshare says NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and you still go ahead, I doubt that they are interested in your silly CSS sugestions.
If they REALLY were interested in customer input, they would make it possible to upload your own CSS file and use that. That way people would not need to use Stylish and then either make something yourself or use comunity made looks for slashdot.
If it looks ugly, it is YOUR problem.
It should not be too hard to load your personal
/. css file when you are logged in. In the end it is just another field in the database, just like your name. As long as it isn't an extra feature for paying customers, because that would mean they will make it ugly on purpose. They could even load three css files.
1) The standard
2) The (optional) users css file
3) The ads cssThat way the ads will still be visible for those who have no right to turn them off. (Yes, I know that that won't be 100% proof and people will still be able to turn them off if they realy want.)
You will be able to just increase the font or only change the background, turn everything in OMGPonies or do a complete re-layout of almost everything.
For a site like
/. I think that would be a solution to a lot of moaning. Finaly a good technical solution to a mainly social problem. -

/. needs to get over Classic
Slashdot Classic is not for everyone or every company, get over it.
The Beta is the only real future of Slashdot. In a perfect world we wouldn't need versions at all and everyone wouldn't have a hissyfit every time someone changed the style of a site.
-
Issues, and fixes
Speaking purely from a look perspective, there are a mess of problems.
- Huge amounts of whitespace on either side. This is 2014, and there are a million tutorials on how to make a fluid design.
- Complete lack of contrast. I have no problem with the text contrast, but there's so little difference between comments, and between stories, no delineation or separation.
- Basic problems - Some fonts in the CSS are defined as "Helvetica sans-serif". There needs to be a comma in there, Chris!
- In slashdot comments, there are 3 levels of display: Open, summarized and hidden. In the new beta, there are again 3 options: Open, closed and hidden. "Closed" is not as versatile as "summarized".
- Using JQuery to get the comments I have little-to-no problem with. But slashdot's main point is the long list of comments. The current AJAX system is limiting, at the very least (only grabbing 100 comments), and while it does have some options, it seems that none of those are available here. I had some issues with sorting this out with pure CSS (the Javascript was interfering with it), but I believe it is possible to implement this comment folding properly.
I've done a fair amount with pure CSS (Userstyle for Stylish here), including fixing the acres-of-whitespace width issue (Though I could do more if the source was in a better order), and bringing back the nicely contrasting bars to comments. I'm sure there is more that could also be done, and I'm seriously considering playing with GreaseMonkey to sort out some of the more egregious Javascript problems, but that's going to remain something on the back burner for now. This is obviously a beta site, and a work-in-progress, and I'm only doing this as a personal amusement in my spare time. I'll gladly answer any questions on this, and I'm certainly more than willing to lend a hand to make one of my favourite sites better.
There is much potential here. Unfortunately, a cannonball at the top of the Eiffel Tower also has much potential. Only time will tell how this is going to work out. But for the moment, it seems, SlashDot Beta is not ready for prime time. Heck, at this stage I'd barely call it a beta.
-
Re:I think
Got Stylish for FireFox or Chrome? Have a userstyle that does it's best to fix most of the problems with Slashdot beta. I haven't got everything the same, but I'm doing what I can. Making the web a better place, one stylesheet at a time...

Re:Example screenshots of the abuse...
That is an old screenshot, I don't get paid for these posts and my family and my time is too valuable to me to sit and take the effort to convince Google fangirls on the internet., Interesting to see that so many complain but not a single person has posted a proper screenshot they claim makes it all okay.
Google changed it from this http://cdn.userstyles.org/style_screenshot_thumbnails/58617_after.jpeg to this http://www.ismoip.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screenshot1.png to this http://i.imgur.com/Wmdd0.png to make more money by confusing people, and people like you defend them as if Google can never do any wrong. Sad, really.

Bing may be worse, but comparison to Bing is irrelevant, it's like comparing Walmart and a mom&pop store. The mom&pop store needs to do these evil things to survive, Walmart can treat employees and customers better because they make lots of profit. Also, Google is the one that claims not to "do no evil" on their site, which Microsoft is the very definition of evil and consumer hostile tactics (see Xbox One).

Re:Example screenshots of the abuse...
Your second link, in the comments has a solution to the problem presented in the article. If someone has a monitor that only displays 256 colors, and doesn't display my high color picture correctly, that is my fault how? How about creating a solution to the problem, an alternative CSS for Google that can be used on older / crappier monitors, rather than complaining?
That's it guys, no one can complain about any problem on any internet website if it's fixable by CSS or a browser extension, and if the "complainer" hasn't gone around to every internet user's home and installed it.
This is like Monsanto suing farmers for not removing every microscopic seed that got blown over from the next farm by the wind or by animals or insects.
The 400lb gorilla in search having an effective monopoly changed it from this http://cdn.userstyles.org/style_screenshot_thumbnails/58617_after.jpeg to this http://www.ismoip.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Screenshot1.png to this http://i.imgur.com/Wmdd0.png to make more money by confusing people, and this is my fault because I haven't created a CSS style to change it(which is extremely trivial even for a beginner web dev)? Wow.
Also, I loved how you totally ignored the fact that it's not just crappy monitors that cause the problem but it has been scientifically proven(see the link i provided in the post) that older people cannot see contrast well.
Now you're going to blame me for not inventing an anti-aging drug to fix the problem. I can see it coming.

Re:Who Watches the Coastguard?
Using http://userstyles.org/ it is easy to get rid of.
That only hides the symptoms. The problem is Slashdot doing it in the first place - it demonstrates subservience to those who wish to monopolise and profit from our lives.

Re:Who Watches the Coastguard?
and fuck Slashdot for putting goddamned Facebook and Twitter links under every fucking post.

Re:Compression?
What is even better is to see if you really need that JavaScript at all. For the majority of sites I look at regularly I use http://userstyles.org/ as a plugin. It is not easy doing all these sites, but I can tell you when you have done it and only see the actual content, it makes me happy to look at those sites.
Sometimes when I look at those sites without the configuration, it amazes me that people even would like to visit them. About 75% on a pageI have no interest in seeing on most sites and I am not even talking about adds, but useless headers and left and right columns and footers and things in between.

Re:Status Bar???
They replaced the Status bar with an Add-on bar. It lacks some features of the status bar (showing links' URLs). People who like the add-on bar but still want more browsing space can try Autohide Add-on bar http://userstyles.org/styles/37319 and Animated Addons Bar http://userstyles.org/styles/40215 .

Re:Tabs on titlebar
http://userstyles.org/styles/42402 This Stylish style implements tabs on titlebar when window is NOT maximized. I think there's some talk amongst Fx developers about implementing this feature (tabs always on titlebar). Apparently, they worry about leaving some space for dragging the window, that's why they don't put tabs on the titlebar when not maximized. Might be relevant: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572160

Re:Fixing CS bugs from 1995!
Try my own theme using Stylish. It's green on black, and you can go in and edit it to amber on black if you so choose. It actually works with mod points and posting, unlike the other dark slashdot themes out there.

Re:So Opera web browser now runs as a system servi
You can also filter them basically the same way AdBlock does... Opera has the "Blocked Content" (edit manually, or enter the "blocking" mode and just start clicking on stuff) which will do the whole
.com/ads/* sort of blocking, you could even download, or use the your existing Adblock list (patterns.ini) with a bit of parsing/editing and using it for Opera (urlfilter.ini), and CSS and JS for more complex blockinghttp://www.adsweep.org/
http://userstyles.org/styles/299etc... quite a bit more manual, but it's not something you have to do very often, however it's essentially the same thing.

Re:Slashdot Looks Like Shit in Opera
