Can't trust 'em
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-870805.html
Stangely enough http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ has disappeared
Some waybacks
http://web.archive.org/web/20040815070955/www.weha vethewayout.com/us/index.asp
The difference between the June 2004 version
http://web.archive.org/web/20040619041226/http://w ww.wehavethewayout.com/us/resourcecenter.asp
And the May 2003 version
http://web.archive.org/web/20030501180724/http://w ww.wehavethewayout.com/us/resourcecenter.asp
of the report is interestingly different -
Oh, now they want a piece of the Linux Cake, huh?
What happened to the days when they ran ads on running Windows 2003 server on their 32 proc machines.?
They had a site, http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ --
Their anti-*nix campaign got insult added to the injury when it was found that the site was hosted on FreeBSD IIRC..
Here is a screenshot of their ad. Suck it unisys. -
Re:But don't they have the way out?Hey, AC, nice comment for all the moderators who DIDN'T RTFA.
To add to the irony of www.wehavethewayout.com, the background image shows what appears to be a way out of a window, whereas the whole point of the site is to show you a way into Windows (TM). Interesting mixed metaphor. Oh well.
-
I thought...
I thought that unisys had the way out
-
But don't they have the way out?
Wow. This is the same Unisys as the "We have the way out" Unisys?...
-
don't forget!
For more information, remember that Microsoft did the same thing not too long ago.
--- -
Re:Ignorance is no excuse.
Excellent point. I wish I had a mod point for you. The entire sales push from MS/Unisys is that you don't need expensive, knowledgeable Unix admins, all you need are cheap, MCSE chimpanzees to run Windows. Finding someone who really knows Windows enough to make it as easy to administer as Unix is a rare event. (Installing cygwin doesn't count.)
-
How will Unisys profit ?Do they even make anything?
Well maybe this. But thats about it. Of course this assumes people would actually buy that POS.
For a good laugh look under the old 2001 slashdot article about the first of the series. You can find it on google.
The original site from "escape from Unix to Windows" was run on FreeBSD. The ad itself is controversial but the fact that it was later running Unix was funny as hell.
Poor old Unisys.
-
Re:No way it could of been UnixWe are talking about this Unisys right?
-
Win32 shatter exploits
In a proper simulation, there is no way out.
But if the simulation runs on Microsoft Windows, we have the way out in more ways than one. In addition to the Unisys/Microsoft ad I just linked to, it's possible to escape Windows protection through shatter exploits.
-
Re:In other words....
The idea here is to recommend MS in the server room -- to your competitors. Let them get mired in the never-ending swamp of brainless MCSEs.
And yes, MCSEs are cheap and brainless, just ask MS. WeHaveTheWayOut.
This was the dumbest thing MS ever did to their greatest supporters: Calling them cheap idiots.
-
UNISYS...Where is UNISYS today?
This is where Unisys is today. Their that big honkin' box on the right column.
-
Re:This validates the UNIX way of doing things ...
I wonder what will happen to their ANTI-UNIX campaign now ? I mean - seriously - how can anybody take them seriously now ?
---- -
Re:WTF!!! Can it be any more apparent?
Well, they have to support FreeBSD, or they wouldn't be able to write software for their own webservers.
-
Re:Got Wot?
Who comes up with something like www.gotdotnet.com ?
Probably the same guy who came up with www.wehavethewayout.com/...
-
Their new tactics...
Reading this you have to belive that they are just going to start telling nothing but lies and half-truths...I mean what Linux user can't take every one of those points and counter-point without thinking for a second.
They used to be able to bring up some valid points
Wonder why? Well, they're probably tired of having everything they say being thrown back in their face. So, they have decided they aren't going to win over the server room, and they are aiming for the business side.
This is probably preaching to the choir, but M$ rules through fear, and Linux has no "target"...What company do they aim for...Redhat? SUSE? IBM?.
This is what scares M$ the most...Linux can not "die"...even if they killed it today, it could come back anytime...even 10 years from now, stronger and better than ever. -
Unisys
This report has been prepared under the sole responsibility of the contractor (Unisys Management Consulting Team).
Wasn't Unisys the ones that partnered with MS for the We Have the Way Out thing which advocated Windows over any UNIX? And now they're recommending Open Source software? -
We have the way out
I'm willing to bet that its gonna be their We have the way out project.
-
So?
They've been running ads, along with UNISYS, for a while now, about a certain offering. Who doesn't expect this to be the focus of their exhibit?
- A.P. -
Do they have the way out?
Come on give it try and install windows on it. Ooops it went just down from 40 teraflops to effectively 1 (the other 39 is probably used for IE).
-
Re:Mod me down if you like
From the article
Linux tends to be portrayed as an archenemy of Microsoft and its Windows operating system. In the long run, the rise of an alternative like Linux will limit Microsoft's future growth and market dominance. But in the near term, as the Hollywood experience shows, Linux is gaining at the expense of proprietary versions of Unix.
Its good news, you dont have to call me an idiot. Good lord, im quite SURE that Microsoft was pressuring them to move away from IRIX, and it worked, they went to linux. -
Re:Taste of Their Own Medicine?
I believe you meant www.wehavethewayout.com.
www.weknowthewayout.com is an Anti-MS/Unisys site with links to places where you can get more information about Linux and BSD and commercial Unixes. -
Re:It's about time
Seems to me like Apple is simply trying to draw people away from Microsoft. Remember, if you can convince them that Microsoft is not the only way (or the Way Out ) you can then convince them to buy alternative software. I don't think Apple is keeping the Linux and Irix versions because they don't want to loose the market (since when has apple cared about lossing markets by killing programs?) I think they're keeping them because it makes a statement that they aren't supporting M$.
-
Re:RedHat to Suse
I'm using RedHat 7.2 right now, but it isn't very stable - Galeon occasionally locks everything up solid. So I need a way out.
I thought that the way out was already found. -
walk with us
Come ye all, follow the cult of the solar devil whose 8th incarnation is in the peak and the ninth will be born soon. Let us close all windows to god and block the ways out coz in our world you can only go in

Untrained Microsoft Sys Administrators...Thanks to stupid ad campaigns and Microsoft saying that Windows servers are easy to administer and don't require expensive experts, it causes the worth of Microsoft Sys Admins everywhere to be cheapened. As someone who administers Microsoft servers, it pisses me off enough that my bosses don't understand the level of intelligence required to properly administer large systems. Now I have Microsoft saying to the top Chiefs in orgs basically that you can get your Microsoft sys admins much cheaper than Unix admins.
Gee, thanks a lot.
So you get what you pay for. You drive down the perceived value of a Microsoft sys admin and you fill these positions with poorly trained or MCSE certified test takers with no real grasp of the larger issues involving administer *any* IT site.
Any competent sys admin would ensure crap like this doesn't happen, no matter what the OS is.
And if the gap in pay and value between Unix and Windows sys admins is widened, who in their right mind coming out of a CS degree in college (not some fly-by-night certification course) is going to want to use their training to specialize in the market that pays the least?
-
They're just begging for a parody...
Something that looks like the M$ page, except it would describe how easy it is to take the donated computers, ditch the OS, and install Linux.
I'm still laughing about www.wehavethewayin.com, although it's only half as funny as the site it emulates www.wehavethewayout.com -
Re:Worried about .Net?
Microsoft are on their way out.
It's kind of a running joke at the moment, is it? ;) -
Luring out of 'real' UNIX
-
an ideaThis might be a little bit mean, but I think we should all slashdot http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ every other day or so for a while to help prove how "stable" it is.

Re:Doesn't XP already do this?
- basically they've extended RDP (which was available in W2K Server) onto the desktop
Yeah, and they failed the laugh test on that one too. Did you see the open ports on the IIS machine that Microsoft belatedy moved their We Have The Way Out *nix bashing site to? Port 5900 was open and exposed to the outside world. That's vnc, a freeware open source remote desktop viewing system that does everything that RDA does... only without the encryption. It's recommended to run it over ssl or similar, but apparently that's a bit complicated for the bulging brains at Microsoft.
That shows that Microsoft don't use their own products, that they happy to use "insecure" open source products when it suits them, and (once again) that they neither know nor care about security. But at least they set a good precedent: the first thing I did to my WinXP box was to make sure that RDA was off, and to download and compile VNC (checking that there's no back doors) - but only after I'd set up zebedee, an ssl tunnel, for it to run on. Sigh.
-
Microsoft and Unisys have this problem solved.
Apparently, Microsoft and Unisys have launched a website dealing with people who have "Cross Platform Issues": http://www.wehavethewayout.com/.
-
Good news!
Now www.wehavethewayout.com can upgrade back to a real server now!
-
Re:Goats.cx?
hehe haha i just found out that it is I who own www.wehavethewayout.com and it turns out that it has been running off of MY apache server but the other day i had to install windows for a fmaily member and somehow it switched over
... :) who knew.... -
Out and Proud!Once upon a time, during the days of the Andrews Sisters and Vera Lynn, Sperry made gyroscopes for naval torpedoes. Damn good gyroscopes. Later as time went on, Sperry learned how to make computers. Everything was fine for awhile.
But then a mid-life crisis occurred. Sperry found out it was gay. Middle aged and gay. So Sperry changed its name to Unisys and tried to corner the market in Gay GIF Technology by leveraging an obscure patent. Eventually the crisis passed. Unisys (nee Sperry) was becoming quite comfortable in its gayness.
Yet time marches on, and with more gray hairs than Mr. Roger's dickweed, Unisys was showing it's' age. Its Gay Patent due to expire, Unisys was in a quandary. But angst makes strange bedfellows, an lo and behold, Unisys soon fell in love with a new boy. Bill Ga[y]tes, the king of Gay Software was the new love of Unisys's (nee Sperry) life. Together they became a regular gay item. Together they are now Out. Bill Ga[y]tes and Unisys are aiming to becoming the outed Queens for a the Day, the Gayest couple of the Year. Together they have found The Way Out.

Re:Compensation
Don't ever listen to the RIAA saying that they're fighting for artist rights, or ensuring that artists are properly compensated. That's not their job. The RIAA's job is to protect the interests of the recording companies.
If BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, AFTRA, etc. weigh in, then you can listen with a slightly less-jaded ear, but the RIAA saying they're looking out for artists is like Microsoft saying that they're only trying to squash unix for the good of their customers.
Like them or not, the RIAA is a very effective organization for what they do - but I take offense when they purport to represent the interests of recording artists.

Re:http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ down
Here here, I tried to submit this yesterday (three times). Of course, expect the exact same damn thing to be successfully submitted by one of the mods today.
C|Net is reporting that the joint Microsoft and Unisys website attacking Unix has been experiencing problems all day. Now, normally I would venture an evil laugh, but in light of yesterdays revelation here on /. about the site being FreeBSD powered, could this merely reinforce Microsoft's point? Not likely, since it was quickly switched over to IIS running on Windows 2000. -
Not much happening today? Not much happening today?!
This story is hilarious... I half expected to see it posted so we could get in our usual Microsoft bashing in for the day...
As I write this, they still don't have that wehavethewayout.com web site working yet.
Also, be sure to check out wehavethewayin.com site....

Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.
...that's what's happening at the original site right now :-) -
Re:not quiteInteresting... Reportedly, they changed the DNS records for their web site to point it at a Win2K box instead of their FreeBSD box. Maybe DNS the change hasn't replicated itself yet, so if you got an error, maybe your DNS hasn't been updated yet?
I went to their site and I got the following standard IIS 404 error:
The page cannot be found The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
Please try the following:- If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
- Open the www.wehavethewayout.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
- Click the Back button to try another link.
Internet Information Services
Even from the IIS site, I *can* download /bin/ls. It's about 285K, and is apparently an ELF binary from a FreeBSD box (based on a couple of strings I found in it).
I can't figure out why you'd want to have /bin/ls anywhere on your web site. Maybe some 31337 h4x0r cracked their site and tried to upload a trojaned 'ls' command? -
Why they have the FreeBSD /bin/ls
As some people have pointed out, the web server has http://www.wehavethewayout.com/bin/ls available, and it's the FreeBSD version.
My guess for this is that they had copied a complete directory structure over from the FreeBSD box, including the web server's /bin/ directory.
-vic -
not quite
the site still allows you to download the
/bin/ls program, which indicates it is running *nix or bsd (on an improperly configured server).
Someone pointed this out in a previous discussion on the matter. -
What an interesting Web site...Anyone else looked at http://www.wehavethewayout.com/ using Konqi?
That's right, it's blank.
Now try it in Opera. What a surprise! That's blank too...
OK, try again. What about Mozilla? Blank again.
Last shot, let's try Dillo. No, that's blank too...
Wait a minute. Why hasn't any other Slashdot reader noticed this already? You can't all be using Internet Exploder, can you?
-
Re:Conspiracy.
i just tryed www.wehavethewayout.com
but the site is empty, possibly someone did some "remote administration" ;)
ok, i dont think someone did, but guess what, the site renders perfectly
in every browser, must be because it's empty ;) -
On a side note.
Just something I found humorous.
Did anybody else notice that their way out is a window the size of a small pet door. Of course the malnutritioned (sp?) geeks can fit through that but they don't really want to. It's the managers that are supposed to want to get away from *nix and they'd never fit through that hole.
Maybe the managers are just supposed to shove as many IT guys out the window as they can and hope for the best.
Anyways, back to M$ bashing.
impto, suspected troll -
Re:They've already changed the HTTP headers
The 404 Pages look like IIS. I dont think they would go through all that trouble of just making Apache look like IIS.
-
I found the solution
I guess I found the reason for the strange server version information. Have a look at the HTML source for www.wehavethewayout.com and you'll notice that the form contents will be emailed to info@pmgdirect.com. Now, if you look at what www.pmgdirect.com is running you'll notice some similarities to www.wehavethewayout.com's information (note the OS differences, though).
[anssi@karhu anssi]$ lynx -head -dump http://www.pmgdirect.com/
HTTP/1.1 200 OK

Web page update
The whole Unix is Bad and Hard for Your Teeny Little Brain to Process strategy is apparently failing too since they're running the website on BSD.
Or were, until somebody noticed that many somebodies noticed.
IMHO, it would be cool to replace their homepage with:
<head><title>I dare you to type deltree /y \<title><head>
<body bgcolor="#000000">
<form action=./ method=post>
<h1 color="#00ff00">C:\> <input type=text></h1>
</form>
</body></head>
-
Focus on Security...
I guess that strategy isn't working out so swell.Or maybe it's all just an incredible coincidence. Given the promotional push (read:throwing money at) that Microsoft has given to the idea of their product on the big iron lately this isn't too surprising.
The whole Unix is Bad and Hard for Your Teeny Little Brain to Process strategy is apparently failing too since they're running the website on BSD.

A REAL, TRUE story - M$ anti-unix site runs BSDTHIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS
