It had been known for at least 2 years when the virus checker completely missed it, then opened (and hence infected) every COM and EXE file on the computer.

Despite having no payload, the thing was so fragmented afterwards I had to format and reinstall (which is the thing to do anyway, but it made backing up any data bloody difficult)

Virus scanners are like condoms; you suggest everyone use them because you can't stop their behaviour so you hope to mitigate it.

Slap 128 megs of games (256 if you get the 2 Gb version - thats nearly 1,000 NES games), load up PocketNES http://www.gameboy-advance.net/emulated/nes_roms_o n_gba.htm and go to town on an original NES controller sized micro NES with built in color screen, auto saving and toggleable turbo buttons built in (GBA has 2 shoulder buttons, why not use them for something :))

Of course you could also just buy (or build) an USB NES Controller and emulate them yourself (to prevent damage to the original games, i'm sure). Not as portable though, and saving and restoring the state is tougher (gotta use keys).

For extra kicks and giggles, anybody remember the old AGI Sierra games? (Think Leisure Suit Larry 1, Space Quest 1,2, Police Quest, Kings Quest Series, etc).

After a brief period of time spent with shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament and real-time strategy games like Warcraft, I more or less resolved myself to the fact that I had outgrown gaming. The genres I had loved just weren't that fun anymore. Then, a few years later, I began to discover two genres that really revitalized my interest -- genres that hadn't really interested me in the past. These were stealth-based first-person sneakers like Thief and No One Lives Forever and good old-fashioned RPGs. Now, while I still don't find myself all that interested in adventure games, I still enjoy gaming in new genres.

If you feel like games just aren't that fun anymore, try something a bit out-of-the-ordinary. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I've only recently started using it, but Greymatter gets the blogging job done quite well if you have the cgi access and small amount of webspace necessary to implement it. It's not quite as fancy as Movable Type and lacks a few features like built-in support for syndication, but I was just looking for a simple, open source, ad-free piece of blogging software and it works for me.

Basically, I spend my time playing whatever was cutting edge three or four years ago. It works out fairly well when you're too cheap to buy games when they first hit the shelves anyway. Unfortunately, even the bargain bin games are starting to exceed my specs. Oh, well... someday I'll scratch together enough dough to upgrade. Stupid grad school. ;)

Wasted quite a few hours today trying to work out how the hell I could make it compile. There are some diffs here but I had a lot of problems applying them (not overly familiar with patch, to be frank). In the end I gave up as I was pretty much getting nowhere, but it was detecting my native Qt/Mac compile.

You want to know why I don't have broadband? Because despite living within 10 miles from AOL, PSINet, WorldCom, as well as big corp. offices of several other well known firms, there is still no viable broadband for most people out here in Loudoun County.

Rumour is, eastern Loudoun was a failed experiment in "fibre to the curb" a few years back. There's more fiber out here than in a Metamucil factory. Thus -- no DSL.

"Fine," you say, "what about cable?"
Well, we're in a real jiffy of a situation in that aspect too. As if the fact that we've got Adelphia out here isn't bad enough, the bit of broadband roll-out that they are doing is going west-to-east -- leaving the areas with the highest population densities out in the cold.

Finally, since you likely live in a TH/Condo out here -- myself included -- unless you have access to southern skies, you have no satellite options.

A while back, I wrote a letter to my local Representative about the fact that they lured all the high-tech companies out here w/o having the infrastructure in place for high-tech workers. His reponse was typically clueless.

Verizon themselves also recieved an angry letter from me, very recently, as they incessantly flood my mailbox with DSL ads, despite the fact that I can't get it.

Bitter? No, not at all...

This song has got to have some sort of record for most diverse group of bands to cover it - I've heard the Johhny Cash, Social Distortion, Wall of Voodoo, and Frank Zappa versions, and this page lists several more.

Be it in business, life, current affairs -- whatever the situation. It's almost ingrained into the Chinese worldview. This has been shown time and time again, through the projects that have been completed and/or worked upon, in China. The Great Wall and The Three Rivers Gorge are the first two obvious examples that come to mind; the manmade Kunming Lake elicits the same thoughts, as well.

Now, I'm not saying these tasks are/were not costly, both in terms of dollars and human lives, nor am I saying that many (especially current) Chinese projects are without corruption and/or controversy.

Rather, what I am pointing out is the historical Chinese trend of "progress" against odds. I don't really want to use the term "determination", because there is certainly the very real possibility that people work on these things against their will. Yet in any case, foreigners who've worked there on corporate projects for a while will tell you that, when working with a Chinese corporation, while they may promise you something seemingly outrageous... but short of a few exceptions, they won't promise you something they can't/won't complete.

The aforementioned exceptions are, however, predictably tied to corruption, where unwilling corporate heads -- or even middle management -- can very easily tie up a project with red tape, unless there's a little cash to "oil the wheels". If China's going to build a moon base, this corrupt undercurrent, in my opinion, is the most likely stumbling block. (As an aside this goes for the 2008 Olympics, too. After just getting back from Beijing a few weeks ago, I will be most amazed if they solve, at least to a large degree, the pollution problem, as they have promised.)

In most cases, however, while a project may take 10, 20, or two hundred years, the Chinese have historically tended to accomplish any goal that they've set out to do.

Again, it's all in the mindset... a "slow but steady" one, at that. Westerners tend to think in short, digestible timeframes. "Project ABC has to be completed in X months." The Chinese, on the other hand, look at things across a much, much larger timetable. What's a hundred years, when you've been around for several-thousand, already?

Granted, in a modern world, this opens the door to corruption and inefficiency... but how many of those "really cool projects", on which you've spent countless hours at work, have gotten tossed into the circular file because they were deemed too costly or too time-inefficient by the corporate heads?

So they say they'll have a moon base? I really don't doubt it. It may not happen in my lifetime, or yours... but it will probably happen, nevertheless.

I can't remember what I was looking up when I saw this ad, but it was something benign. Now, I am not shitting you, that's what came up on my screen. It went to this webpage, which I'm surprised is still up.

It made me wonder whether we're becoming a self-appointed nation of commandos, or whether that was someone with simply way too much time and money on his hands.

Aye, this "30 yr old OS" is just a poor limited clone of Multics, which supposedly required hardware that was too powerful for its day. So now that our Microcomputers have processors capable of billions of cycles per second, RAM more abundant than most of the off line storage that was available, and hard drive storage capacity that can only be filled by massive copyright violation (or video editing), we are using the restricted clone of Multics. The name Unix (UNIX is not an acronym, the caps was a historical accident) was a reference to Multics, as "One of whatever Multics was many of" or "Multics without balls."

Of course I see your point, though computer science hasn't quite been as linear as your examples would indicate: Spoken language and transportation technology is usually a tangible progression. Multics isn't the only counter-example; consider the history of Lisp, older than most High Level Languages, and yet still more functional than most contemporary languages, which are still playing catch-up.

As for human language, I'm guessing you've never heard of Superl, have you? Now that is a language done right!

There were two versions of Space Quest 1. In the first version (which was EGA only), you had to use the save and restore trick.
In a follow-up VGA release, they introduced the Magnet, to make it easier.

i have mixed feelings about working as a student for the place i study at. i have done that for over 4.5 years; however, recently dumb politics at my college cost me my job and almost my college career.

i have worked my way up from grunt windows tech guy to a linux sys admin. i designed major parts of the college network, and set up 90% of the servers responsible for almost anything imaginable. i was well trusted by all faculty and administration, with exception of couple power hungry individuals. [actually, some of that experience is described at www.wiw.org/~ananke - very messy, but switching from a t1 to a messy telnet.exe on 14.4 is hard]

anyway, point being - the administrations of colleges/etc have to be careful. my college after i was fired lost their only linux administrator. my leave from the college was not associated with my work in any way, but it left my school in a big mess. try to imagine a comp dept on a tight budget, letting one of their main admins go, with nobody left with any real linux experience. they have been already contacting contracting companies to help them with it.

point being - if i wouldn't be a student, my college would be secured a bit more - such as i would still have my job, or even i would have a notice of more than just 10 minutes. because of a dumb decision from couple administrative guys, the college is suffering from network congestion, loss of services on a daily basis - just because the people left there do not know linux well enough. and of course - it will cost the college, and students, to hire contracting companies. as a student work study i was much more economic.

but those are just some of the silly things that administrative people do.

I dunno if this will be any use to anyone, but here goes...

Those web-bugs are so small that you can't easily right-click and block image from server. I started to put a page together a while ago where I take the webbug, as I find it, put it on a page where i've expanded height and width to 50x50, in order to be able to right-click and block em.

I was thinking about writing a cgi that would allow people to enter an URL and offending page/company name and add to the page, but I've not had time to do it.

I was gonna suggest a You Can't Do That on Television stamp, with green paste on the back and that dude's head on the front, etc., until I realised that it was a Canadian show. Come to think of it, so did Bryan Adams, another icon of the eighties, IMO. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
