Re:the real story here
I was thinking the real story is that their guidance sensors are so accurate they can target and annihilate mosquitos only a few mm across. See also: dwarven fishing pole

My Hallow's Eve Festivities
Running Headless Horseman event ONE MORE TIME on every character eligible, then weeping inconsolably and raiding the kids' candy buckets when I don't get the Horse of the Headless Horseman mount in spite of over 50 attempts. Because World of Warcraft is fun!

Re:About the title...

Hmm
Not quite sure why there has been a trend to stray from this game to be honest. I mean I have quit a couple times but expansions have brought me back. This one even harder than the last. The raid content is good for my main, the lfr content good enough for my alts and damn some of the lore is just tear jerkingly good. I was at the lazy turnip a couple nights ago on one of my alts after killing Galleon and remembered this http://www.wowhead.com/object=216757/old-ri-and-the-million-souls The fact that that is just one of many great stories scattered around the world is one of the many things that have kept me enthralled. Tbh I'm die hard horde but I can't wait to see how Garrosh is dealt with. Now that is gonna be good story..

Re:Actually took a college class about this
Talk to any of the current players in WoW and a majority of them will tell you that going from Wrath to Cataclysm was a huge let down in the storytelling. Wrath was about this big, bad Lich King, and every one working together to take him down. The storytelling was amazing, the questing kept the story moving for the whole expansion, up until the very end when the Lich King died.
Veteran of the Wrathgate cinematic was (still is, on my alts), goosebump inducing. The Battle for Undercity (the follow up quest that is now gone)...Amazing.
(What killed Wrath is how long it took for new content...but that's a discussion for another time.)
Cataclysm was about a dragon randomly torching zones. Comical, because of the random, but it just wasn't a good enough story. The only story line in Cataclysm that was any fun was Thrall's story, and it was more of a side story to try to salvage the expansion. Even killing the bad dragon at the end was not the least bit epic because you didn't even get to see the whole body of the dragon. Just his back and claws. Meh.

Re:Mists of Dailyquestia
I suspect Blizzard are desperate for ways of getting WoW development costs down so they can focus on other things.
And it shows: http://www.wowhead.com/quest=31254... Dire straights indeed.
I understand being lax in casual conversation, but not when millions will pay to read you. I never ever saw this kind of crap in the previous expansions and I've seen half a dozen in MoP.

Re:Free2play in games...
There's a quest out in Storm Peaks in WoW (one of the zones you can play in), where your character essentially multiboxes. You're given a set of 4 shaman that attack anything you do. Its quite fun. (Specific quest: http://www.wowhead.com/quest=13005).

Re:Your premise is faulty.
Every dungeon is beatable by people that just turned 80 (in blue/green gear).
Wha? The current cap is 85. You can't even enter some of the dungeons at 80. If you're referring to new level 80 players going into Wrath dungeons in Cataclysm blue/green gear then you're really gaming the system.
Compare this heroic 10 man ICC mace to this random world drop Cataclysm mace. Notice the difference? One is from running 10 man heroic ICC which is not feasibly doable by a fresh 80 and the other is conveniently available on your auction house! Oh and the one from the AH is still better!

Re:The players WoW is losing are the socializers..The Scryers. Our community has always been slow progression, and even tho there are so many different guilds, there are a lot of collaboration between guilds. Infinite Asylum and Excessus both got together to do a fund raiser for a member of IA that lost a family member suddenly. Excessus has done several Red Cross donation events.
We have done some fun World PvP with Promade. A bunch of people got together to do 25 man Ulduar for the drake achievements, which was a huge deal for us. Other servers can just toss out a 'LFM', but on our server, it's a very creative process to get people to go do things. In the end, however, it ends up being a ton of fun, friends are made, and true community spirit is alive and well.
Please note, progression is minimal. Expect to see mages with agility enchants, hunters with spirit gear, and pally tanks wearing leather. Don't set your hopes up on 'making it the best possible server ever', as the community will eat you alive. We have had several 25 man progression guilds transfer in to get the realm firsts, only to be endlessly mocked until they transfer back off. This server eats hard core progression guilds like a fat kid with candy.
But if you are looking for a change of pace, and a chance to feel part of the community, stop on by! Don't forget to bring Thunderfury

Re:The new truism
1)- If you go to the websites you link, what you get is a very narrow subset of items. In WoW, each item has stats that are the same as other items with its name- there's a finite list of them, pretty much. Here's a list of all the items that are "current" in WoW right now (older items are really weak) that you can wear:
http://www.wowhead.com/items?filter=qu=4;minle=353#0-2+1See how that's over 2000 items?
Now here's the list of "bind on equip" items. These are the items you can freely trade, or acquire with gold.
http://www.wowhead.com/items?filter=qu=4;minle=353;cr=3;crs=1;crv=0
Less than 200.
So while you can buy gold or buy items from these websites, you can't really buy MUCH- most of the items have to actually come from:
-Earning valor or justice points from defeating powerful monsters.
-Earning honor or conquest points from defeating enemy players.
-When a monster dies, you can "loot" him- but these items can only be assigned to people who helped in the killing of the monster, not people who didn't help.2- It's against the rules. Linking to that website is a lot like saying that you can buy weed, so what's the big deal? if you purchase something from that website and get reported for it, your whole account can be locked by Blizzard, deleted for violating their policy. Meanwhile, the suppliers such as the one you linked to are constantly having to stay fluid because at any time Blizzard might catch up with them (they normally ban in waves).
So right now, WoW is a world with very very very very little permeability to real world money. You can convert cash to gold easily enough, but you can't really power your character up with that gold, and when you can, it's not by much, and when you do, it is against the rules. What we are seeing in this announcement is something much different.
This would probably kill WoW. It's a good thing that they will never do anything like it there.

WoW does this too...
There were several quests in WotLK that were sexual innuendo:
Blowing Hodir's Horn, Polishing the Helm, Mounting Hodir's Helm, Raising Hodir's Spear, Thrusting Hodir's Spear, and Going Bearback
And some would say they've stepped it up a notch in Cataclysm:
Camel Tow, A Case of Crabs, A Taste For Tail, Just the Tip, and Premature Explosionation
My point is that if you are old enough to get the joke it's not like they are corrupting you since you've already been corrupted. As for double standards how about the song 'Crank That' by Soulja Boy where there are various references to 'superman' and 'super soak' 'that ho'. I'll spare you what those mean, you can look that up yourself on Urban Dictionary, but this is (or was, it's about 2 years old) on the radio. There's no parental controls on the radio. No outrage because it isn't the corrupter of this current generation - video games. -

Re:Servers non-responsive
Some of us, trying to level 80s, are running into shared-spawn quest areas with huge kill competition. For instance, the initial Vashj'ir quests. I hop on the boat leaving from Orgrimmar, travel over the sea, and promptly get shipwrecked by some hideous tentacle beast and find myself trapped with about 50 other Hordies in the shrinking trapped air bubble of our inverted ship. Did I mention I'm in a PvP server, and by some amazing stroke of luck the Alliance's ship arrived in our area at exactly the same time, and got wrecked at the same time?
And now 50 Hordies and 50 Allys have to compete for mobs and quest items, and a few of us have figured out the best way to get ahead is to kill the guys on the other side. So much hilarity ensues.
Ahhh. It definitely has the play feel of Classic WoW. I guess I've missed it.

Re:Sorry Blizzard, no longer a customer
Please never let second life corrupt WoW.
And they're redoing how raid lockouts work for Cata, and applying those changes to ICC and RS with the 4.01 patch, these changes will make it easier for raid groups, allowing a player to go with a different raid group for every boss over a single week, potentially. It will make picking up pugs to fill raids, or breaking a 25 man raid whort a few people into 2 10 mans for an evening then back to 25 later, and so on. So, yeah, they are playing attention, and improving things, accross the board. -

Re:No, they need to die
If you don't like hugging squirrels, don't fucking do it. You only miss out on 10 nerd points which you obviously don't care about. For 99.9% of WoW's achievements, you can completely ignore them and pretend they don't exist and it doesn't affect the game at all. The major exception in my mind being What a Long Strange Trip It's Been since it awards a slightly faster-than-normal mount, but even that's going away in the next expansion as you'll be able to train to have all your mounts fly at that speed.
-
Re:No, they need to die
Proper acknowledgement of skill should be in the gameplay, not a flashy announcement.
Take racing games. You could have an achievement for doing cookies or you could design a level that requires turning around in short order. Say, the track goes to a bridge under construction and it's just a to-and-back race.
As for killing enemies in one explosion, I'll have to plead ignorance regarding the difficulty since I don't know anything about the game. Killing three with a single explosion just seems arbitrary. Is that more or less skillful than taking out three with a gun in under five seconds? Are there plenty of explosives around for many attempts or do you have only enough for a couple tries?
This, btw, is what comes to mind when I think about this explosion achievement.
-
Re:No, they need to die
At least in World of Warcraft, no, you can't disable them.
I know you said ignore but I'm going to ignore that.
Not only will they pop up on your screen but there will be an area emote, ingame graphic effect, and an announcement to your guild. You can turn off the announcements to you but all of the above will happen no matter what.
My main issue is that they send players out to do stuff that artificially increases the difficulty of encounters (examples 1, 2, 3). Why not have achievements to have the tank always below 50% health or have no one heal or everyone plays with their eyes closed?
Lesser issues is using achievements to congratulate players for stuff they do through normal gameplay. WoW has achievements for hitting level 10, 20, 30, etc., for getting riding skill, looting gold, and leveling professions.
As for a non-WoW example, I present Alan Wake's Boob Tube achievement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79_OANOGFyY

Re:No, they need to die
You linked an achievement which requires work.
A better example would have been Shave and a Haircut
Yes, folks! You get an achievement for changing your hair style. Whisky Tango Foxtrot indeed. -
No, they need to die
Anyone else tired of every god damn company picking up on this lil' pat on the back "hey good job buddy" crap?
I don't need that when I complete a level. Finishing the level IS the reward (and maybe a save point if there's no save anywhere system).
What's wrong with the arcade-ish points system? Oh, you need to reward the most mundane and completely contrary actions in the game? http://www.wowhead.com/achievement=1206
All achievements say to me is that the developers weren't able to properly reward players and, without the achievements, doesn't have an enticing enough carrot on a stick to motivate them.
