Re:If obly
I guess you missed the calm, considered and insightful debate around shows like The Simpsons (particularly Apu), Friends and Saved by the Bell. Or the thoughtful re-examining of old movies like the 60s/70s James Bond stuff.
This appears to be yet more fake outrage. Unfortunately posting outrage videos about fake outrage on YouTube is quite popular, but if you ignore those there are some quite thoughtful pieces on this subject.
Moviebob on Apu: https://youtu.be/NGMnnrw70lA
Lindsay Ellis on Transformers: https://youtu.be/tKyrUMUervU
Innuendo Studios on Monkey Island (the third part about Marley in the sequels in particular): https://youtu.be/IJcJevvWGP8

Netscape on Sgi Octane / Irix
Just last week I installed Sgi Irix on my Octane (was only using Linux before) - wow, was that a adventurous experience. Also early Netscape. Unfortunately the WWW does not look that great without CSS, and too old HTTPS/SSL support: https://youtu.be/AkXB8M-0rTM?t...

Re: It's not Amazon
I don't blame Amazon for receiving subsidies. Well, I wish they'd have the principles to not ask but that's a lot to expect.
I mostly blame cities and states for offering those subsidies. We've seen time and again that they're generally a terrible investment. When will cities and states learn that the only way to win is to not play the game?

Re:What nuclear really needs..
If molten salt reactors are "the silver bullet that we desperately need" why is no one anywhere in the world even proposing building one? And without a single operating unit, how can one conclude they have properties - including cost - superior to every existing design?
That is a result of the physics, and a system that is inherently safe. Low pressure operation with a chemical stable fuel salt, that is inseparable from the the coolant, and which traps the fission products, makes the system vastly simpler. No precision solid fuel fabrication, no enormous pressure vessel and piping, no redundant pumps or other safety critical systems, no giant containment building, no cooling towers, no low efficiency steam turbine. Everywhere you look there are opportunities for cost reduction, and several engineering studies have produced low estimates around $2/W.
The great interest around the globe is due to engineers and scientists which can appreciate the physics of these reactors. You apparently haven't looked very hard; there are a number of serious efforts in progress, the largest in China. For a brief history and current progress, see the end of Thorium 2017 @ 28:30, and then watch it from the start to learn a bit.
The fact of the matter is this type of reactor has become a hobby-horse of nerd-dom based on theoretical advantages, but ignoring the enormous list of real, practical obstacles of building a successful commercial model. A good place to start is do materials that will withstand 40 years of the corrosive effects of molten salt even exist? How much do candidate materials cost? If you look into these issues, the reasons no one wants to build one becomes clear.
Theory based on well understood physics and almost 5 years of operational experience of an MSR, during which the corrosion issue was addressed. Besides, the metal and various parts don't have to last 40 years; pretty much every company is planning for 4-7 year core swaps, which allows standard steel, quicker learning and refinement without long term materials qualification, and it yet it still makes economic sense.

Re: Truly sad...
Re: "maybe tell us why the OBVIOUS cause of AGW that has a mountain of evidence, theory, experimentation and is based on the same science that makes the thing you use everyday work down to the quantum level, is wrong."
I'm not really sure what you are trying to say here, but prediction markets are an incredibly effective way to test theories.
Re: "An easy test for bullshit is to ask if the potential bullshitter requires you to reject everything you can learn and observe in favor of their extraordinary and unproveable alternative."
The leading quantum theorists of the day said the same thing when Charles Townes suggested that he had created a maser (the precursor to the laser). When radio waves were observed coming from space by radio engineers, the astronomers of the day thought it was either a mistake or a hoax. When Robert Goddard first suggested that a rocket could be sent to crash into the Moon, he was widely ridiculed (even by some physics professors) for not understanding that the rocket would have nothing to push against in space (a lot of people did not understand F=ma); in fact, this ridicule played a part in Germany and Russia becoming fluent in rocketry at the same time as the U.S. The Germans landed 3,000 V2 rockets in Europe -- a rocket built with each of Goddard's key innovations. The V2 was the first true "American" rocket
... built by Germans ... aimed at our allies ... because the American public decided to ridicule Goddard. You might take the time to think carefully about this situation. Learn the story. Once you know these details, it completely alters the lesson of the Space Race.

Re:Idiot post about Silicon Valley
My favourite example of how no-one can agree what an SJW is would be this clip from Star Trek The Next Generation: https://youtu.be/Xn5-iG6FX58
It's from the episode "The Drumhead", in which an investigator comes to uncover a conspiracy on the Enterprise. She ends up turning it into a witch hunt, reminiscent of the McCarthy era. Picard shuts her down with a brilliant speech.
The title of the video is "Triggered SJW Attacks Picard, Instantly Regrets It". The person who posted it seems to think that the investigator is the SJW, but many of the comments think it is Picard. The investigator cares little for social justice, she just wants to root out enemies of the Federation. Picard wants to protect the mixed-race guy she picks on, and on the whole his character is known for wrestling with moral issues and having a strong commitment to justice.
So is an SJW just someone who annoys you, or an authoritarian, or someone acting unreasonably, or is there some set of qualities that defines them? And if the latter, how come it's nor Picard, a guy who literally fights for social justice at times?
The phrase is completely meaningless, but people think they know what it means so you can use it and expect your audience to nod along regardless of whether they actually agree with you or not.

Re:Why does basic income keep appearing here?
The Soviet Union had something close to a basic income. Everyone got money. Everyone had a job too, but there were basically no expectations and you couldn't be fired. There seemed to be little pride in workmanship, faucets hooked up randomly (Hot - Cold), live electrical wires sticking out of walls, hanging from the ceiling, out of street posts (I walked into one of these), big holes in sidewalks, high rates of alcoholism (on and off the job). All construction was nonsquare and misaligned.
This guy has a good youtube channel, Real Russia of what it's like to live in Russia and remember this is 25 years after it fell.
