If you are bored there are plenty of youtube videos that show how best to handle the phone scammers. Some are quite amusing.

The egregious perfidy of the scammers is readily apparent in most of these videos. From their point of view they are just doing a regular job and get genuinely upset if anyone calls them on it.

Interestingly for the US you appear to be correct - coins and notes in the US are basically a convenient fiction, they have as much backing as legal tender as the nearest flat green thing from a tree.

However, that doesn't explain things like this. Are you sure that's correct?

Compare that to the UK, where if you are in debt to someone then you can't be sued for non-payment if you offer full payment of your debts in legal tender, that's the definition. Which kind of makes more sense from the "paid with a wheelbarrow full of pennies" perspective.

It's sad that people take pride in lacking basic math skills, and yet so common. Very basic math, even. A competent high school freshman can do the calculations I did. And anyone with basic mathematical literacy doesn't even need to run the numbers to see that your sample size is completely inadequate to make any judgments about nationwide frequency.

Innumeracy aside, why would you expect to find this on the news? It's not a crime, just really obnoxious. And videos of people watching porn mostly wouldn't be allowed on YouTube, because of the porn.

But, that said, a simple google search turned up these three links on the first page of results. I'm sure there'd have been more but the page was mostly filled with stories about Starbucks decision to block porn. If you dig deeper, I'm sure you can find lots, lots more:

Do we know who initiated turning down the sensitivity of detection? Maybe it was a boss who ordered engineers to do it because she figured any problem would be caught by a correctly functioning safety driver.

BTW, it appears the video originally released from the car camera (such as here) showed little beyond the reach of the headlights and was oddly dark. Others took video of the same route a night or two and there seems to be adequate street lighting (such as here). In the "dark" video, it appears the street lights are on so that alone wouldn't explain it.

It was documented, but it appears not properly in "differences training" (moving from one model of a type to another model -- far less extensive than moving to another type). Nope, the "popular" stuff is force fed to us, making it defacto popular rather than actually being of high quality. Today's recording industry sucks. It's created by a small handful of people who have developed a winning marketing strategy that maintains their monopoly, not a pool of creative, unique and talented musicians. You've been jedi-mind tricked into believing that they are the end-all, be-all of music.

Yes, there does exist plenty of amateur musicians that suck worse than the recording industry. But open your mind and do a little digging and weeding work of your own. You can find plenty of amateur musicians that rival and even far exceed the recording industry's best. YouTube has helped a lot with this -- once you break into a community of actual talent, word of mouth/referral links will help you expand your circle and find further high quality artists with less effort than the initial push you made.

I don't think that's it, actually; those are paid promotional links... and they're definitely not going away. Rather, the best example of popup annotations that I've seen would be in this captioned version of Witch Doctor.

Note that the popups already fail to display within some of the more modern video players, such as on iOS... so for those of you who don't have access to a more "traditional" computing device: the most obvious series of popups in the video are a set of random colored blocks which abruptly overlay the video composer's comment that this was the first video he ever made, alongside a popup which reads, "I wish I hadn't put that in."
