The process sounds a lot like how aluminum gets refined. Aluminum doesn't exist in nature as a pure metal - the ores (primarily bauxite) are mostly aluminum oxides. Well, that's the hard part, isn't it? They are almost universally despised. My workload has increased significantly since my hospital implemented an EMR, and the only thing that has improved vs paper is that you can read everyone's writing. Of course, those relevant nuggets of information are now buried in pages of auto-generated "content" that load slowly, so they're not necessarily easier to find out.

I'm an anesthesiologist, and my job is not like that of other doctors. Unlike the vast majority of doctors, I don't get paid to write notes with more details. My notes are very, very brief. I can write down "healthy" and leave it at that, and still get paid. What I do have to do is find all those nuggets of information. In the previous system we had, charts were done on paper, and scanned in after discharge. Lab results and anything dictated (operative notes, radiology results, pathology results) were easily found in the computer. Now? Happy hunting. My note auto-includes all recent radiology results, even when they are irrelevant to what I'm going to do. If I want a nice, clean note that is in any way as concise as my paper notes were, I have to go and delete all of that manually.

There's a nice little section where diagnoses are entered as the patient comes into the system. If someone has put these in, it auto-populates. Great, right? Except that if you've ever been pregnant, then "pregnant" shall forevermore be on your list. I have to hover over a very specific box to delete that when, for example, you've had your baby. Or babies - I'll get one "pregnant" diagnosis for every one of those. It helpfully includes information like whether the patient is sexually active or not - even if the patient is currently pregnant. There is no reason that should ever appear in my note, because the only thing that is relevant to me is whether or not you are currently pregnant.

So, just to make a simple example, let's have a healthy 19-year-old woman with appendictis. No allergies, no medications, no prior surgeries, no family history of anesthetic complications, normal airway exam, brief list of labs, negative pregnancy test, plan general anesthesia, ASA physical status 1E. That is what my paper note looked like. The EMR note would fill pages.

The thing about paper medical records, for all their faults, is that they were a highly refined method for transmitting maximum information in minimum space. Even after the entire rest of the VA had switched to electronic records (and although the backend was apparently a nightmare, the user experience wasn't too awful), anesthesia records were done on paper and then scanned in, because they occupied the front and back of one sheet of paper and were dense with information that just can't be represented in text. Even simple things like blood chemistry were typically recorded in a skeleton so that you didn't have to read line-by-line.

Having said all that, every doctor can tell you something similar about their own specialty. Irrelevant or incorrect information clogs notes, especially as they are more or less cut-and-pasted day to day, with the newest day usually coming at the bottom. I was investigating a case where a patient who was in the ICU quit breathing and had to be intubated. It happens, no surprise there, and one of the physician notes written at the time suggested that it was correlated with starting a specific medication. I decided to look up the nurse's notes to see whether that was true or not - ICU nurses are a dedicated bunch, and there's no way that it wasn't documented. They can strike any provisional ballot, so long as they leave its contents up in the ballot set and mark it rejected.

As you note, absentee ballots come in the mail, are paper, are not observed, and so represent a weakness. Disenfranchisement represents a larger threat, so we accept this weakness. On military base and ship, we can actually run the same kind of public election as here, observed by the public of the men on ship--who of course will leak if they're not allowed to record election ballot traces.

So what about paper?

Well, you can slip a piece of pencil under your fingernail and spoil ballots when counting paper in full public view. You can miscount. Election judges can collude, despite the whole reliance on people not colluding (we've seen this in other places).

We perform our recounts days or weeks later, with ballots kept in a secure location. Again: how do I know anyone in the chain-of-custody isn't just a group of 3-5 people who can print a new seal and are fully-willing to collude? Buy a few people off, get them an election pen (remember what I said about pencil?), and they can create a few new spoiler ballots.

In an election with 100,000 ballots, one state here recounted with 3,500 fewer, and claimed they must have just found more spoilers (without explaining which were probably not originally spoilers). We just accept that. Three percent of votes.

See how many avenues of attack we have? Now look at our electronic voting machines. Yeah, hell no. The stuff out there is horrible. That doesn't mean paper is safe; it just means we damned well better move to stronger EVMs if we're going to move off paper.

Candidate wins by 2000 votes and only 1000 advanced votes, why bother counting

Computing whether a candidate won can be...difficult. Take any Smith-efficient system. You have to compute all the one-on-one pairings: if a ballot ranks Bill 1, Anne 2, and Jim 3, then Bill vs Jim is 1 vote to Bill, Bill vs. Anne is 1 vote to Bill, Anne vs. Jim is 1 vote to Anne. These pairings are important.

To get the Smith set, you find out who wins these.

Let's say Bill, Anne, and Jim each get a majority of rankings above Dave and Mary. Dave and Mary categorically lose against these other three. Dave and Mary are out.

Now we have Bill, Anne, and Jim. Bill beats Anne; Anne beats Jim; Jim beats Bill. O

It does not matter if it uses more energy. It matters if the cost is worthwhile. Look at e.g. aluminium. That uses a shitload of electricity to to turn Bauxite into aluminium. Yet people still make money of it.

It is worth pointing out that aluminum is eminently recyclable, too. In fact, it takes only 5% as much energy to recycle existing aluminum than to refine new aluminum from ore. Because of this, most of the aluminum produced in the history of humanity is still in use. One could think of that energy as a one-time cost, unlike cryptocurrencies, where there is no end in sight.

Most of the energy cost of refining aluminum comes from the fact that aluminum, unlike gold, is bound up in various oxides. To break the oxides and purify aluminum metal requires massive amounts of electricity - it's a lot like a battery in reverse. Until we had access to large amounts of electricity, the alternative means of purifying aluminum were so costly and time consuming that aluminum was treated like a precious metal. Napoleon III had aluminum tableware to flaunt his wealth and power (which is just laughable today, especially when you consider how soft pure aluminum is). The tip of the Washington Monument in D.C. is aluminum. At the time (1884), it was the largest chunk of aluminum in existence.

edmunds.com sure is raising hell about their Model 3 LR 36.8 kWh/100miles.

Motortrend don't seem pleased by their 34.9 kWh/100miles (103.7 MPGe) Model 3.

CarAndDriver sound disappointed by their 200miles range Model 3.

This German Environment Minister (and Green Party Tree Hugger)rejected his Tesla (not a Model 3 this time but a Model S P100 (100kWh battery, Model 3 LR only has a 75 kWh battery)), due to 190 miles range (300km), among other quality issues.

Fact of the matter is, reliable sources are getting ~200miles range from Tesla big battery offerings.

I kind of favor reliable sources with known track records rather than anonymous cowards like Rei/KarenRei/Karen Pease, or even yourself Kyr Arvin.

Another possibility is Amazon's recent starting pay increase. Very simply that means each employee costs more. And the budget for this year might provide only a certain amount of money for the work force. IOW, they don't want to exceed their budget.

All these robots do is move shelves full of bins around. That's it. They don't sort. They don't pack. They don't ship. They help with picking (and stowing) by bringing the shelves to the human who does everything except walk to the shelves.

We know people who work in a distro center near us. People handle the products in all phases. I think some automation is used to pull the inventory (off the high shelving), but then the robotic pallets simply move the bins around the warehouse.
