Try to Name the SuSE Mascot
The competition will begin in New York at the Linux World, which was staged Feb. 1, 2000 through Feb. 4; the final decision will be revealed at the CeBIT 2000, at the end of of February 2000 in Hanover. From all suggestions which we receive SuSE will select the most funny or best fitting ones, which will be presented to the public on our Web site. From these suggestions the public will then be able to choose the winning name. One of the suppliers of the name which gets the most votes will be invited by SuSE to the largest European Linux event, the "LinuxTag in Stuttgart". SuSE will also draw further winners from the hat, who'll receive a current version of SuSE Linux as well as the newly-named cuddly green chameleon. " Ya know, 'Rob' has a nice ring to it...

- It reminds those among us who know things of lizards, and everyone else goes 'huh', thus helping me maintain my "I'm in the know" superior feeling.
- Those who've played Fallout 2 will immediately have flashbacks to ghouls and repairing nuclear reactors. Anything that induces Fallout 2 flashbacks is cool, even if it's a bit frightening at first. Those who've played the original fallout will probably, as a side effect, recall iguana-on-a-stick, with even better flashbacks as a result.
- "Suzy" is too hard to make a trademark out of. But can't you all just see it now? "Gecko(TM) is a registered mark of SuSE Linux(TM). Linux(TM) is, in turn, a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds(TM). Torvalds(TM) is, in turn, a trademark of...."
- And perhaps most frighteningly, if people use "suzy", they'll implicitly think of a female mascot. "Tux" is implicitly male. Soon, despite the will of many a valiant linux user, there will be an unnatural union - think gatekeeper and keymaster - which we must stop at all costs. Plus we don't want to get PETA angry at us.
In conclusion, a vote for "gecko" is a vote for a linux distribution which won't have horrifying, horrifying consequences on all of our lives! Thank you.-Denor

Interestingly, chameleon is derived from the greek word khamaileon, literally meaning "ground lion," which could mean that SuSE is (ground) lion country. Lion country is a term for some unknown and unexplored area (dark continent, terra incognita, etc) which could directly refer to Linux as it is just that to many people. They hear Linux spoken of as this wondrous yet seemingly far off thing that is at the same time fasinating and frightening. A lion dance is a traditional Chinese ritual preformed to bring good luck, clearly a referal to the installation of Linux. So many levels, that little lizard must be the coolest logo ever!
Oh yeah, this is about name for the lizard...um...Lennard. Yeah.

Why not call him Quincy, the name of the lizard in those FoxTrot Cartoons?
If you use "Dupree" then you already have a live incarnation with its own webcam. The same goes for "Akbar".
And if you go with the ever popular "Iggy", you can save money by using a beanie baby instead of manufacturing a proprietary lizard, which is exactly the kind of let's-not-reinvent-the-wheel mentality that makes the open-source movement go 'round.

I think every long time /. reader should go back two years from now in the archives and read the type of comments then. After that, look at what they have turned into. Very depressing.. there is very little content.. the only replies that get moderated up are the "funny" ones so the whole karma system is messed up IMO.
What it lacks in creativity it more than makes up for in dragon-sounding coolness, IMO.

seriously, doesn't the image stand alone by itself? doesn't "that SuSE iguana" convey the idea? What's the point of naming it? I guess you want to convey it with "mascot" status or something, but WHY?
Why must we stick a cutesy brand name on everything? Why can't we just have some things be purely visual symbols for once? I personally think that Tux didn't need a name.. that you shouldn't have to stick a monosyllabic verbal handle on everything in order for it to be powerful.. that in some sense you dilute the symbol and limit it by giving it a name. All of a sudden it isn't this ethereal, otherworldly, metaphorical iguana, standing for something or other; suddenly it's an iguana, one specific iguana, with a name and everything. The abstract purity the symbol once had is gone..

actually, i think that the lizard in the SuSe logo thingy looks distinctly female.. not sure why it seems that way though.
a gender neutral name may work better for whatever reason.. i dunno.. but i doubt they'll give it a specifically male name.
anyway, the name gecko is already taken. It happens to be the name of a certain web browser's HTML rendering engine. I'm sure the mozilla people wouldn't mind you using the name, but i seriously doubt you could get away with trademarking it if it had already been used as a major component of a different major opensource project.

I just installed SuSE yesterday, the only two things that annoyed me were:
a) Sucky mouse detection
b) The SuSE mascot is so damn ugly I needed to replace it everywhere I could.

1 small thing: some members of the iguana family CAN change colour. in particular some of the species of the iguana-family 'anolis' are quite capable of changing colour, even though over a more limited range.for instance the green anolis (anolis carolinensis), which is indigenous in the US, can change colour between green and brown. Also, it has the climbing abilities of the gecko with it's 'sticky' feet. The iguana family is quite a large one, with quite huge differences in size, the smallest iguanas are about 20 cm, the largest can reach sizes over 1 meter (all including tail) The iguana you probably are referring to is the largest one(I don't know the name in english I fear. translated from dutch: green iguana). it lives in the trees, but it eats mainly fruit. It does not need to be fast, fruit won't run away.

Where I used to live, geckos do change color, but over a very small range and very slowly. I've seen them green, brown and transparent (when it is dark and then you turn on the light, you can see all its guts). But I think their color changes depending on the background and they can't do it at will. Also, geckos have sharp fingernails which help them climb (at least some of them do, I think).
well, considering this is supposed to be a chamaeleon I've never seen it even slightly mottled let alone another color. How about calling it Pinkie?

I'm sorry, but Carolina anoles don't even come close to chameleons in range, accuracy or intensity of color. I've owned both. Tha anole will do his best to change his colour to that of a leaf (when on a leaf), and to a branch (when on a branch) but is usually obvious. Chameleons have an amazing range, from pale green to black to brown and orange. More than a few feet away, on nearly any natural surface, they're indistinguishable!
Plus I've found chameleons, especially the Jackson's, to have a more pleasant disposition.

The only possible choice is Jésus (pronounced "hay-soose"). Not only does its second syllable have the right sound (similar to SuSe) but, for much of the world's population, it implies that it's a savior. They could even make the case that RedHat is the devil! (I hope that any karma I acquire in this world doesn't count against me in the next.)
