Linus will move to Moscow to work with Elbrus
K.G. writes "A Russian computer related news agency Computerra said today
that Linus Torvalds will move to Moscow,
quitting his job in Transmeta to develop a Linux compatible OS
intended to run on the E2K processor from Elbrus International.
In a russian-language article named
"Closer to Dad"
Computerra said that the factors that convinced Linus to move
to Russia were "more interesting and promising job", closeness
to his father who works as a Moscow correspondent for Finnish
radio & TV, and a more familiar climate, similar to Linus's homeland
Finland (they don't get a lot of snow in LA, do they... ).
They also quoted the future boss of Linus, professor Boris Babayan:
"The great professional qualities of Torvalds will help create a dependable OS for the E2K processor, fully compatible with Linux, in a
tight deadline". "
I submitted this weeks ago, and they just now post it.
Why is this guy so important?
Linus didn't take a job in Russia because he wanted to. He fled because he *had* to.
The NSA finally noticed all the crypto code in the kernel. Not the "loopback hooks"; those are an obvious red herring. But the IDEA implementation in drivers/net/pseudo/pseudocode, the steganography in the low bits that come of drivers/char/random.c, and the experimental Merced firmware virus hidden in drivers/scsi/qlogicfs_asm.c.
Taking him out at Transmeta was out of the question, of course, because the control for Transmeta comes straight from the Bavarian Illuminati. So they tried a "small job" at his home. But they forgot about Tove (code name: "kill -9").

The computer thingy that's a big box with blinky lights on it is a computer toaster. It is a super special interactive toaster, you put bread into the slot in the front, and push its buttons until the bread is toasted. Hours of fun (that's why it cost so much).

I've been following up on this stuff, and I've gotten too many strange responses. Besides, why would MS go after these sites? Their primary readers already hate MS...
This is one massive, well-coordinated April Fool's joke. Slashdot is in on it, too. Expect a story tomorrow about how Microsoft is shutting those sites down due to libel.
I remember a comment from either CmdrTaco or Hemos a while back about BIG plans for the April Fool's day. This is it.
MS is the only thing that the three sites (userfriendly, bedope, segfault) have in common.
And the same audience... And the people who run these sites know each other... And they're all part of the same MS-hating community.
Slashdot is in on it, but only to provide the final piece -- a big story on the first concerning the lawsuits...
Slashdot couldn't pretend like it was being threatened or else we'd have a massive media frenzy and then the joke would be revealed early... like checking to see if a suit has actually been filed in the appropriate courts.
I'll bet you a $1000 the lawsuit does not exist.

This brief history of mcsun (and its mcvax predecessor) seems to suggest "kremvax" was an invention of the Dutch, not of the Russians....
One presumes the above is Sengan's own April Fool's joke (my Russian vocabulary has largely evaporated - or, at least, been moved to tertiary storage - but there wasn't anything about LA in the article), given that Transmeta isn't in LA.
But we don't get much snow here in Silicon Valley, either.

the site is indeed legit. I looked through it and it seems to be a nice site. They even have forums for Linux and BeOS fans. Intrestingly enough, they have slashdot-style polls with a 'huh?' answer being an option. (gee, where did they get this idea from?).
Oh, and this is somewhat related, they have an article Babayan vs Intel which I didn't read. They also had a poll about this and something like 50% believe it's for real.
The article might be a joke. Or maybe it's just so they get more hits? Who knows?

Actually, Blueberry and Grape are faster. Darker shades of translucence allow less light to interfere with the workings of the machine, keeping the (already cool) G3 a little cooler. This provides for a slightly faster speed.

That could actually work, though. At least the mouse could generate enough to provide its own 5 volts and a little to spare. Of course the mouse would weigh about as much as a small brick and you'd have to change from one hand to the other regularly to keep one arm from being a shirt size larger than the other from the muscle build-up.

Actually, I believe it was the barbecue grill manufacturers and such trying to get more daylight for people to use their products. At least it was definitely them behind the change of the start from the last weekend of April to the first weekend of April a few years ago.

I don't read Russian, and since most of their pages look like extended ascii apparently my browser doesn't read Cyrillic, but I clicked some of the links on the sight (found something from March 1st that seemed to be talking about Linux and Merced)so I'm pretty sure that the site is legit even if the story isn't, but it occurred to me that a great 4/1 trick would be if Slashdot, including all of the previous Slashdot pages, polls, Ask Slashdot's, etc., was suddenly in Russian. :-)
(hope this doesn't start a rash of consultants telling the PHB's "see, we told you this Linus guy is a commie, all those free software beatniks are!"

The link to the Russian web site was very good, very inspired thinking. However, there was only one thing missing. Sengan should have added a commentary at the end. Something like how he totally approved of this move and that the computer expertise in Europe was much better than what the average American thought it was. Now that would have generated a few thoughtful replies.
I just realized something. That link is to a Russian web site. We all know what happens when /. posts a link. Right now, there a Ruskie running around shouting "Capitalistic Running Dog cyber attack! They're trying to take down our server!" If the server stays up, then the same guy starts yelling, "I'm Invincible!"

Actually, 77 counties in Indiana do not observe DST, they follow EST year-round. There are 5 by Chicago and 5 by Evansville (both Central, therefore using CST and CDT) and 2 by Cinicinatti and three near Louisville (Eastern, using EST and EDT) that do. See this reference.

I know that, most of the honourable gentlemen and ladies at /. find the idea that Linus leaves highly paid job in the US to the research center in Moscow, where highest salary is probably no more than $500 a month. A month! And they don't get paid for months.

Most importantly, there they've got no money to develop their great ideas. If Linux was to work there, he would find that actually he can't do much, as no money means: no equipment, no newest data, no partners, no shit.
For me, as a Russian, is very sad to see this stupid joke. The people at the Babayan's lab have some of the greatest designs, but they have no chance to implement them, because of lack of funding. As a person who known Russia not from newspaper, I can say they are not going to get anything from Government in nearest 3-5 years. Their only hope is foreign investments, but companies like Intel doesn't really want to develop something superior than their own designs.
Even if they are to buy the company, it will be just to make sure the designs will never leave the door.
The joke originally comes from Russian newspaper, and I tell you, that in Russia fools day (1 April) is generally the day, when most sad and sick jokes are done.
The last guys who will laugh today are the E2K processor team (maybe Linus won't laugh at that too, he is ethical guy enough not to laugh at someone's major problems, at least I hope so and want to believe).
p.s. Article was not translated properly, in particular OS is said to be "native", but not "dependable" as in suggested variant.

T1 does exist. In fact most companies choose optic-fiber lines, since they not much more expensive than copper wires.
BUT, hardware is not expensive, BANDSWIDTH is damn expansive, and it's common that a company with fiber-optic capable of 1-2Mbit, uses only 64kb, because it costs almost as much as T1 in the US.
That majorly sucks.

- I doubt that Linus would move to Moscow with his dad, especially at this time when his dad isn't even in Moscow. He's taking care of his other kids at home in Finland. He'll be back in Moscow soon though.
- The Russian climate is different from the Finnish one. Finland generally has warmer winters, especially in the south where Linus would be.
So, you should've written that Linus has finally given up his golden rule not to participate in politics and has now gone to Russia to study the remnants of the commie Soviet Union. Also, you might've thrown in a note about RMS accompanying him. Keep that in mind for next year...Heh. I heard that this morning as I was in that semi-asleep mode after waking up. They had me confused there for a few minutes until I remembered the date.

I just fell for one in a newsgroup, where someone claimed that BG was going to take the stand in the DOJ suit. Then they quoted a psychologist saying BG would probably admit to wrongdoing, in hopes that the judge would believe the opposite of whatever he said and so dismiss the lawsuit.

Exactly, after then the time in CA, and AZ will be the same, because AZ has no time difference between summer, and winter, we have the same time all year round, and thanks to that it is actually same as CA in summer, so you could say that AZ keeps alternating between two time zones, because in winter it is in the Mountain Time Zone, and in Summer it is in The Pacific Time Zone.

I've made a point of being extra vigilant ever since my mother fooled me when I was a kid. I ran downstairs in my pyjamas to get a glimpse of the rare furry animal she said was in our back garden, only to be told "April Fool!". No-one's caught me out since.

I seem to remember reading in April's "Electronics Now" an article which detailed a brand new analog processor that could run at a whopping 300 GHz...sounded dubious, especially when I saw the name of the company that made it -- ecraf corporation. ;-)

It didn't dawn on me until now it could be an April Fools joke. I sure hope not since I just sent Gates a letter telling him to F*** him**** and publicly proclaimed I will never us a M$ product again (which ain't such a bad idea anyway). If it is a joke it's in bad taste. If it isn't I'm really mad and will do everything I can to convince everyone I can to quit supporting M$ in anyway.

Yes, they all are down. But however, it has not been reported on other community sites, like SlashDot, which would lead us to believe that at least Rob et al. think it is a hoax.
Also, they being all shut down at this particular date would also hint at something of that note.
But if it isn't a hoax, and the sites are really gone... well, simply, someone is going to be very pissed off.

What's the point, you still can read the article :). You will not even see the true Cyrilic letters unless you switch you browser to Cyrilic-KOI8 encoding and have Cyrilic fonts installed. On 95 latest NC comes with Cyrilic fonts. On Linux I didn't find one.
