It's wishful thinking to entertain the possibility that they would give him a computer in the first place, but it's a pipe dream to think that he would continue development as if nothing had happened.

  7. Re:I think defining a "highbrow game would be easy on Revenge Of The Highbrow Games · · Score: 1

From the article, he mentions that adventure/interactive fiction "clearly doesn't belong", but I believe it does. Perhaps not oddball games such as the Lucasarts adventures, but I honestly believe interactive fiction is as "highbrow" as its going to get. I think no game typifies this more than The Longest Journey, the precursor to Dreamfall. The Longest Journey is a intellectualy engaging interactive fiction combining an interesting story with extensive characterization. It may involve fantasy, but more as a surreal framework for a very real, human-centric story. I don't think it should be so easily dismissed as the author seems to.

Although I would personally classify certain adventure games as highbrow, a game certain to satisfy even the hoittiest and toittiest of urbane snobs is Façade. The central form of the game centers around interaction with a dysfunctional couple. Through the course of play, you basically write out a movie script with two virtual actors, eventually concluding with one of the games several eventual outcomes. I personally don't find the gameplay very fun (trying to figure out simple sentences that the characters will understand), but the end result of a interactively crafted, single dramatic scene is quite enjoyable.

Not that I'm wearing a tinfoil hat or anything, but this sounds like the precursor to Microsoft Dollars, or Wal-Mart Bucks and that really scares me.

2ch BBS goes well beyond the realm of "Otaku" in that it has boards for everything, from music to fashion to business, and everything in between. The relatively simple interface allows it to be viewed from cell phones, too. The otaku may be the most prolific, but they're hardly the only audience.

Like many online communities, they develop their own memes, and even have a "Slashdot effect" of their own; URLs are posted without the leading h to avoid flooding unsuspecting webservers. My favorite board has to be the AA Saloon, filled with all kinds of crazy, creative, and quite often, NSFW ascii art.

Chronicles of Riddick; Escape from Butcher Bay was actually a very well done game. It was a FPS style experience, but made good use of Riddick's powers, had good voice acting, and an interesting premise; escape from a maximum security prison. Combined with good voice acting, and well done normal mapping, it's probably one of the best games on XBox.

No offense, but I think there's several reasons why this is a very bad idea. First and foremost is Blizzard probably doesn't want some other random company harvesting data through accounts on their servers.

Second, this would be the equivalent of paying a service to power level your character. Unless the MMO was exactly the same as WoW (which it couldn't be as that is what it's trying to improve on), these people would have no idea how to play their suddenly uber buffed character. Without the experience in the low end game, they would have no idea how to function in the high end.

The only way a system like this would ever work is if Blizzard released the successor to WoW, but even then I don't think anybody would view it as a good idea.

I do appreciate your point, but I don't think the core gameplay of the Halo games will ever radically change: you will always be running around, shooting Covenant/Flood. The only features that will ever be added are ones that allow you to battle Covenant/Flood more effectively. I guess it depends on whether or not you like shooting Covenant/Flood.

Having played a lot of both Halo 1 & 2, I find it hard to go back to the original now. While the original is still fun, it just feels like something is missing. Such as dual wielding; I continually try to dual wield pistols, SMGs, and Needlers in the first Halo because it just feels like it's always been there. I consider that a successful integration of new gameplay in a sequel: it feels so natural that I swear I must have done it in the first.

I always hear people say Halo is unoriginal and that everything done in it has been done in other games. That's true, but I have always thought the whole of Halo is much greater than the sum of its parts. Maybe every "feature" has been done elsewhere, but nowhere else is it combined in such a fluid fashion. I'm not a Halo fanboy, I'm just a gamer who recognizes a good game when he plays one.
