think for a moment all of the potentially WORSE problems Once you see a family member with Alzheimer's you will realize how frighteningly short that list is for a lot of people including myself.
Change the world? Hardly. It's just a laptop; it doesn't cure cancer, it doesn't feed hungry mouths, it doesn't provide shelter, it doesn't provide electricity, it doesn't cure AIDS, and it doesn't solve a whole other myriad of problems. It is a laptop. Change the world? quite possibly. It's just an education. It can help cure cancer, it can help feed hungry mouths, it can help provide shelter, it can help provide electricity, it can help cure AIDS, and it can help solve a whole other myriad of problems. It is an education.
"This is not a laptop project; it's an education project," - Negroponte
If you had any idea what the NSA is or what they do, you'd realize how fucking stupid you sound. yeah, he didn't even mention wiretapping once in his whole story!
as TFS states, people are critical of Gates because he has waited until he has all this money to speak up. I'm going to take an optimistic approach and say that perhaps he has waited until he has money to push this because nobody listens to poor people. If your neighbor came out and said the same thing that Gates is I doubt it would be on/. Gates is in a position where he can actually effect changes. I say if he wants to help the poor, more power to him as long as he doesn't turn a blind eye to Microsoft.
Giving up control of content and giving it away free are not rational ideas in a market economy, yet everyone's cheering.t As soon as the content hits the hands of the consumers you have given up control. The only way to secure control is to not distribute. Now that's what I call an irrational idea in a market economy!
giving it away free I can agree with Lance on this point but it's relevance to the conversation eludes me.
licenses for Windows and free copies that amount to that much money? What the fuck do you expect them to do As previously stated, it costs nothing to give out licenses. What is more significant is that if people have nothing to run the software it doesn't matter how many licenses you give them.
This isn't a free meal for a homeless guy. This is akin to Madonna tossing the homeless guy a free copy of her latest CD. No, it's even worse, this is more like Madonna telling a homeless person that he has legal permission to download her new album even though he has no way to even utilize it (not that I think many people do)
don't take first aid advice from/. comments. go get training or information from a more reputable source

Does anyone know of any studies about HDD and other hardware failure rates when powering down as opposed to sleep/hibernation/etc? It seems like everyone has their own antecdotal evidence but I haven't seen anyone show any kind of proof beyond that about what is actually best for the hardware.
I know of several people who have decided against apple because they just didn't feel comfortable without accidental damage covered under warranty. It seems like apple could have something beyond applecare that could be purchased to cover this so those who don't want to pay extra don't have to.
Taylor said he's been financially crippled by about $136,000 he's been ordered to pay in a legal dispute over finder's rights to an Allosaurus skeleton unearthed.....
If the mastodon auction doesn't cover the judgment, Taylor said local authorities will seize his 10-year-old museum and sell off its contents in February. wait until February and get the skull on the cheap
You just need to know how to keep on innovating and making money. The hoover cafe! for all of your internet needs during the reccesion.
here's the motto: We're so cheap, we use pirated FOSS!
If I were a president of an institution and I thought that someone was a lunatic just waiting to shoot up the school, the last thing I would want to do is expell him under flimsy pretexts. It seems like that would be the LAST thing you would ever want to do. If this kid didn't have a motive, he sure as hell has one now. Taking that into consideration I have a hard time believing the president acted in the best interest of the university whether Barnes was a threat or not.
Anyone knows that to be taken seriously in the deth metal scene you can only record on pure h2o. Find me one vinyl that sounds as good AND is as refreshing to drink!
I see the school voucher thing much more as parents have a choice as to where to send their kids instead of they don't have to pay for a system they don't use. If some parents think that the theory of evolution will turn their children into amoral crackheads, they can choose to go to another institution without having to pay for their child's education twice. Perhaps then they wouldn't be screaming about the public school systems.
In the same sense, if the science teacher at the local public school can't even spell 'evolution' much less teach it then you can sned your child elsewhere as well.
Basically I see school vouchers as a way for people to get a choice in their education instead of having to try and devise one scheme of education that everyone will be happy with.
the "SHOW SOURCE" key on the OLPC will do when Windows is running? It turns the screen blue no matter what you are doing. Think of it as a home button.
I think the correct answer is a shorter quote...
I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed after reading your subject when your comment didn't say "big whoop, wanna fight about it?"

Renting and watching videos should be enough for anyone

If you want to be taken seriously as an astronomer then might I suggest not comparing your research to fictional works
