A frequent problem I had at one place of employment was as follows. The mail server (imail for the curious) would reject any mail that it could not resolve. THis would be fine, but it rejected it and informed you of this in a outlook send and recieve message instead of a bounce. Users would call me weekly saying that they couldn't send and recieve mail. I would walk over, see the error, and ask them to read it out loud to me. They would start "your message has been rejected by the server as the recipient email %EMAIL% cannot be found". They would then go "ohhhh!" and realize that they typed the email address wrong and it was sitting in their outbox waiting to go out.
I must have solved that problem several hundred times. Thankfully, very rarely for the same user. Its bad mail server design, but what was I to do?
"IP Protection helps isolate the risks of R&D costs, and makes it possible for Greed and Humanity to work together for a common output."
Well its nice to live in that idealistic fantasy land, but down here in the real world IP law stifles creativity, provides in$urmountable barrier$ to entry and locks away good ideas with patent trolls who do nothing but sit on them.
You mention R&D alot, but a large percentage of r&d could very easily be taken over by passonate people in the educational sectors of society. There would no need to beg for money if we taxed corporations more to pay for research. Why should corporations decide what studies they should fund? I say blanket tax them all, and you will see less hair loss drugs and more cures for cancer. Right now corps focus on making profit. There are a large number of fields, such as the medical industry, where that is directly antithetical to the goals of the field. Software is another example. Software is about making tools so that others can use the tools to accomplish larger goals. With free or subsidized tools, more resources can be devoted back into their laybour, instead of paying for seat licenses or software protection schemes ala DRM.
Just wait 15 years till genetic patents start to become popular and you realize you do not even own yourself! Sadly, by that time it will be too late as law always references the past. If we don't set the precedent now, who knows how they will make you pay in the future. Bottom line, alot of IP law promotes artificial scarcity. Hopefully as a society, we can realize how stupid that is.
Its not a perfect world, largely because of giant for profit corporations. Don't make it sound like we, as a society, cant do something about that!
Thats because its trying to read the drive. You could 1) update your bios 2) set usb or removable drives to not be bootable 3) sometimes theres a setting where the bios wont treat the usb disk as a hard drive.
Anyway, its not the disks fault its your crappy motherboard. Its a pretty common problem
While a nice ideal, that is a pretty unrealistic expectation. The problem here is with people making public information that they do not want to be public. Whoes fault is that but the poster.
"that photo of them smoking a mari[j]uana cigarette 10 years ago at a frat party."
Should never have been posted online, much less associated with a REAL name. There's a reason people create handles for themselves. As for other people posting your picture online on your behalf, that is a problem and sites should provide a DMCA-esqe takedown procedure for any social networking images. Personally, I just explain to people why they must never post a picture of me on facebook and they seem to understand and respect my wishes. The psycho goatse loving ex scenario has not come up in my life as of yet. Personally, I try and treat people with respect so I've been lucky so far.
Not that I disagree with you, I defiantly perfer all my devices to be mini usb (my sansa mp3 player and motorola phone, like all motorola phones are), but this statemnet:
"he means that I would have to buy all sorts of expensive connecting devices from Apple that I have no intention of spending money on like a moron."
Is not correct. The apple interface is so common now that i regularly find car chargers, wall chargers and what have you at dollar stores for a dollar or two. If a connector is available at most dollar stores, I dont tend to mind its "proprietary" nature.
"The funny thing is that, as shown here, most people cannot tell the difference, which begs the question of whether it matters that a product was substituted."
I've had godawful salmon at sushi restaurants but what is your recourse? Don't eat there pretty much. Its not like your going to call out the owner and say - hey this is shome shite fish you got here! I'd imagine most people can tell that its not as good as the normal sushi they are used to, but attribute it to bad chefs or lack of freshness. Of course some people who have never known good sushi (east coasters) would have no idea what to expect. Maybe the people who frequent these places simply have no idea what the correct fish is supposed to taste like.
"we are not going to reduce our meals to a science experiment."
If they made a handheld personal computer which took a sample of food and judged its purity, or broke down its components by DNA, there would for sure be a market. If for no other reason than to not pay for inferior food. The device would pay for itself in a month for someone who eats out alot. Empowering people to make smart buying decisions themselves always has a market. Dont think of it as a science experiment, but more of a game. Many people obsessively care about what they put in their bodies. That is why mandatory nutritional information has been on all foodstuffs since the mid 90s.
People love to catch other people in a lie. It makes them feel superior, and rightly so.
sadly vagrancy is not against the law in most places. Not sure about american laws though.
the worst ones are the ones that dart out into traffic to try and get handouts. You hit them, hopefully its a killing blow otherwise they will sue your ass off and probably win.
"Well, that and the fact macs are more common among people working in creative industries"
1996 called, it wants its stereotypical mac flames back. You do know that they make photoshop for the PC now right?
"Creative people" use macs, is nothing more than apple marketting at its finest. I bet "urbanites" also use macs too, right? that is the stereotype.. and college kids, hipsters, metrosexuals.. i could go on.
"More to the point Vista is preventing you from taking a screen shot of a video"
Um, XP and 2k did that as well. You have to change the system renderer with something like media player classic to VRM9 renderless. I believe its some sort of macrovision.
"Just because you hate Bush, doesn't mean that the Iranian gov't doesn't mean us harm."
By "US" I hope you mean "the us". Im personally alot less afraid of iran than of america. Frankly, america deserves an attack from iran after all the shit that they did to that country. Personally, I do not think iran will attack the US because they strike me as an honourable people. Some of the nicest developers I have met were from iran. I understand that there are alot of crazy muslim nutbags there, but I doubt its as representative of the country as a whole as american news makes it sound. Everyone deserves nuclear power, and I also believe if a crazy country like usa can have nuclear weapons, then everyone should. MAD is the only way nuclear weapons can be reasonably expected to exsist.
either everyone has them, or no one does. There is no such thing as a "good" or "Evil" country. Good and evil are religious inventions.
Im pretty sure that most telephone boxes around here (the big ones in the street) are individually alarmed. I have not tested this hypothesis but it seems likely they have some sort of intrusion switch.
its FUD for sure. If there is a hardware problem with the laptop, any sane person would remove the drive first off before sending it to support. If its a software problem, it probably isn't covered under the warranty in the first place.
"Sigh. Because, yes, every magazine with advertisements is completely untrustworthy"
When the advertisements are for products that are reviewed in the same magazine then yes. Thats the definition of untrustworthy.PC games magazines are the leading example of shills in the world. Its a wonder you chose that example as it is spectacularly bad.
". Knowing that that extra 10% goes towards things like superfetch (instantly launching applications is nice), or file indexing (I think it's pretty cool being able to instantly search music and photos by tag and queue up a playlist from within a naked explorer window), or shiny things like generating proper icons for video clips, or defragging my disk - and not gowing towards "nothing" - is pretty nifty."
Superfetch and readyboost are bloat that add nothing. They are the first things I turn off and actually it gets alot of performance back. How does windows know what i "usually" run. Its garbage microsoft predictive AI. They should have learned their lesson with findfast.exe. Same goes for indexing. How many times do you use search? once or twice a month? you really need every change being constantly indexed in the background... BLOAT!!! Oh and my favourite feature you mentioned, how windows VISTA automatiically re positions and uses its oh so smart brains to add mp3 columns to every folder with mp3s in it. How annoying it is to have windows randomly decide to change my default columns. And the shit it adds, how many fucking star ratings an mp3 has?!? fuck you! real media junkies play everything through winamp anyway.
""save" dialog boxes remember the original file name after typing in a path, are pretty cool."
This has been a feature everywhere except IE, all the way back to win2k. It is for sure not a vista change. Maybe they just added that into IE7 and thats why your seeing it now, but this is old stuff.
A great idea until you realize that walking around with a can of spray paint in your pocket will probably get you labeled as a graffito tagger and locked up.
The best explanation for this that ive ever heard is mistyped commands and errant pastes.. Id rather take my chances with those two, then having to type my damn password every 5 seconds like on a fucking macintosh.
Ive been logging on as root for 10 years of linux and Ive never rm-rfed my filesystem..... yet!
"its hard to describe, but it feels good not being a pirate. it feels good to know that i am a legitimate user of quality software, and that i am supporting the makers of that software."
are you joking? If you're legitimate, they will just try and screw you! they are software companies.... Upgrades must be purchased, and most software is buggy as hell. Attributing morality to buying software is like saying its more morally correct to pay the sticker price instead of haggling. Anyone whoes not a corporation and buys software (especially windows) is a fool.
You're just throwing your money away. Donating to open source projects however is very worthwhile and I myself have done it numerous times.
"I have almost never (either with my own machines or at work) seen a BSOD that wasn't caused by faulty hardware"
I saw one yesterday that was caused by a virus. Infact I see them all the time, caused by virii or malware. Now if you had said "faulty hardware DRIVERS" then you might have been more accurate. Still not correct though, as having a virus infected screen saver (what BSODed the laptop i was working on yesterday) has nothing to do with the hardware. I've also had SQL server BSOD machines as well as cold fusion. Bad drivers on vista do it too.
Thats one of the reasons I will never buy another apple product ever. They cheat you out of a real warranty (90 day warranty on a $500 ipod?!?!) and there rationelle is "oh you should have baught the extended waranty". Um NO THANKS apple... how about you provide regular standards of support? such as 3 years on a HARD DRIVE based mp3 player. At least 1 god damn year.. jeez..
whats next apple, forcing me to pay for "service packs" to your OS?
when your product is so crap that you NEED to buy an extended warranty because it WILL fail, you know that there is something very wrong there
This pill already exsists.. Its called dexedrine, otherwise known as speed. Meth isnt a bad "exercise pill" either, providing you get it pure enough so the impurities dont drive you insane.
The fact that its not at all healthy to take drugs for something that you should be able to accomplish yourself should be considered. Exercise isnt just about losing weight, you would probably also have to take anti depressants and a whole host of other pills to get the same benefits that exercise accrues.
The best example I can think of:
A frequent problem I had at one place of employment was as follows. The mail server (imail for the curious) would reject any mail that it could not resolve. Why should I change my preferences, slashdots the one who sucks!
Thats because its trying to read the drive. You could 1) update your bios 2) set usb or removable drives to not be bootable 3) sometimes theres a setting where the bios wont treat the usb disk as a hard drive.

Are you somehow insinuating that this exact situation couldnt and doesn't happen to corporations every single day?
At least the government is accountable to the populace*. Badly run corporations are accountable to no one and can do much more damage.
*may not be true in USA
I dont get you speed freaks. Who cares how fast the os boots if you never have to reboot it?
One more step toward the titorian worldline!
we'll see if mccain gets elected and starts ww3 with russia (also looking probable)
You need a copy of motorola phone tools on your pc to charge via USB.

Just download the books before you leave or on the hotels wifi. Get a cheap laptop or something if you dont have one.
Im pretty sure that most telephone boxes around here (the big ones in the street) are individually alarmed. I have not tested this hypothesis but it seems likely they have some sort of intrusion switch.
