I did the math. This is awesome. Just last week I needed some books ASAP that I couldn't get locally. I've already spent like $25 this year on express shipping from Amazon. I will save way more than $79 with this. It's brilliant for Amazon too, I'm sure I'll buy way more stuff from them now knowing I can get anything in 2 days for nothing extra.

Isn't it really just showing if the providers own website was up? Thats not really a statement on the reliability of the service provider as a whole. When we have brownouts I bet the lights are still on at the power company..
It also means that the whole 'the most reliable sites' use *bsd thing is kind of silly. Most of the top 10 websites of providers use *bsd. Hardly means that most of the servers @ the provider use *bsd. I know that I have linux servers @ rackspace and NYI.

  11. Re:this is 100% non-news on Ballmer Sells Part of his Stake in Microsoft · · Score: 1

No, this is exactly the sort of financial news minutia I expect FT to report. They report on everything. Hell, I'VE been interviewed by the Financial Times (really). I bet they reported about the other sales I mentioned also. Its 100% appropriate for them to cover, but they don't make an overly big deal about it and editorialize with comments that he probably needed the money for parking tickets or is putting into motion a plan to sell all his MS holdings.

  12. this is 100% non-news on Ballmer Sells Part of his Stake in Microsoft · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is par for the course. All CEOs do it. This story just made it to /. since its Ballmer and, well, if he took a dump people would try and tie it back to MS being evil. Larry Augustin sold 100k shares a the end of February, nobody posted that. Matt Szulik sold 500k shares at the beginning of the year and Mcnealy sold almost 5 million in April. Nobody cared about those. Sorry folks, Ballmer just has a smart financial planner, this doesn't mean MS is doomed.

Seriosuly, could this story be more sensational? Its just a stupid graph that shows a 3GHz processor crunches numbers faster than a dual 1GHz machine. This is shocking news why? Where the hell does it say anything about prefered platforms? This is a bad story even by slashdot's low editorial standards. Whats next, 'Study shows 10 dollar bill buys twice as much as a 5!'?

  19. Re:Enterprise AS on Red Hat Announces Enterprise Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually I see this announcement as a huge price drop. We've been paying $1200 per machine for 2 CPU machines. Now that goes down to $350 or $800. I suspect 99% of the licenses they sell in the near future will be for the lower end line. Most of the linux in corporate america right now is on 2 CPU pizza boxes. Anyone using these is getting a discount from the original (ridiculous.. $1200 os license for a $2000 machine) Advanced Server pricing.

Now if a competitor was using the name thats one thing, but if the term has simply entered the language, whats the big deal?

These are the only two ecommerce sites that matter anyway.

I long thought that online retailers should push the convinience factor rather than the price factor anyway.. That being said, this sucks. I always figure 'ok, I pay shipping, but I don't pay tax, and its easier for me to shop online'. Now the equation will be more complicated.
