  5. "Cyberspace" is the soul of the Internet on Is the Concept of 'Cyberspace' Stupid? · · Score: 3, Interesting

It occurs to me that the concept of "Cyberspace" is not too distant from the concept of a soul in the individual. The soul seems to have originated, and continues to be accepted as a valid metaphysical concept, because we do not want to believe in ourselves as merely the firing of synapses in the brain. We want to believe that there is more going on there, something that supersedes those physical boundaries and makes us more than that. Thus, we think of the soul as a real thing, even as it's directly linked to our brains in some way. Thinking of Cyberspace as being more than the a mere collection of the computers, pathways between then, and signals being sent, is very similar. We seem to want to think of the Internet as more than the merely the the sum of those parts. Where the analogy breaks down of course, is that unlike the human brain, there is nothing we do not know about how the Internet functions. As such, it seems to me like the author is right, and we really should be taking a physicalist approach in order to have a meaningful conversation: The Internet really is merely the sum of it's parts, and nothing more. There is no "Cyberspace," it is a metaphysical mistake to think there is one, and it is a result of the way we use our language that lends credence to the concept.

They are essentially the only place to rent video games, and their prices on Used Games are way better than EB/Game Stop. Not only do they pay more (cash) for your used games, they also sell them for cheaper, so competing with EB/Game Stop is not incredibly challenging. Only problem, is that they've been in this business since BEFORE we had an EB games in the mall, back when I'd buy my Super NES games used. I'm not sure if it'll be possible to start that up from scratch at this point, with most people already granting EB the monopoly in their minds.

Minimum wage is not slave labour, it's just minimum wage, nothing more, nothing less. Dramatic hyperbole is not going to make your case solid. Cheating on fluff classes I am inclined to not care about, either. The education system is screwed up and needs fixed badly enough that people stuck in it now should be using whatever means they can to get through and get the piece of paper entitling them to be some kind of magically upstanding citizens (regardless of actual skill or knowledge). Again, I never cheated on tests, but I wouldn't necessarily vilify those who do. If cheating on a meaningless test makes the difference for someone between flipping burgers and having a fairly good job, I can't possibly fault them for it, and I think you'd be hard pressed to do so, even. Maybe if the system weren't broken it would be different, but I just see bigger ethical and moral issues in the world than that.

Hard pressed? Surely you jest. Do you know what cheating is a substitute for? Hard work. There is no "fluff" class it's not possible to get through with decent grades through hard work. Cheating, is dishonest. There can be no question about that. And it's not dishonest for the sake of some greater good either, don't act like this is some righteous resistance against an oppressive educational system. It doesn't matter if the educational system is screwed up or not. Cheating is just being dishonest so one can be lazy. I have no sympathy for someone who would rather lie, than work hard to pass a test. They want to have that piece of paper so they don't have to end up flipping burgers? Good for them. How about doing it through hard work, rather than deceit? Not willing to put in the hard work, why do you think they deserve the better jobs then? I would, with 100% certainty, hire a dropout before I would hire a graduate whom I knew had cheated.

I used to own an iPhone 3g. When iOS 4 came out and I updated, the phone slowed to a CRAWL. This was apparently a common thing, as the iOS 4 was more geared towards the hardware in the iPhone 4 or possibly the 3GS. So, it now took noticeably longer to open ANY app, even the ones built into the phone, answering calls was laggy, it was not good. With no way to "legitimately" downgrade to a previous version, I ended up feeling like I HAD to jailbreak, just to retain the performance of the previous version! So, the chart suggesting that the 3g is still being "supported" with new updates is entirely misleading. New updates are that are designed for better hardware are being FORCED on it. I like Windows 7, but I wouldn't want to be all but forced to put it on a 10 year old computer that still runs XP just fine, that would be counter productive. (For those who try to say you aren't "Forced." If your iPhone ever crashes and you have to do a restore, it'll demand you go to the latest iOS. It happened to me.)

For the most part you are correct, but from what I played in the Beta, story plays a MUCH larger part in the game than in WoW. Every quest has voiced dialogue that is specific to your class, along with dialogue options, etc. The Dialogue wheel from Mass Effect shows up when you can select a dialogue. Sometimes you'll say things that get you Darkside or Lightside points. Will this matter hugely? No, not really, though apparently your LS / DS points will change some skills you can use.. Does the dialogue let you change the quests you'll be doing? No. Does it make accepting quests more fun? Absolutely. Skipping quest dialogue in this game isn't like skipping it in WoW, it would be like skipping it in Mass Effect. For me, this is a big enough difference to make TOR worth playing. Plus, they really took the dialogue seriously, which makes me take it seriously too. I found myself being on vent and saying "Okay, AFK, taking a quest." and muting vent, so I would be able to pay attention to what was going on. Of course, if when you play Mass Effect you just blast through the dialogue so you can get on with it, none of this will make any difference.

I agree with you that Universities SHOULDN'T be gouging their students on book fees, or rather should be providing alternatives to buying new... but how does that actually have anything to do with the service that Amazon claims to be providing? That's like saying Police are a bad idea because criminals just shouldn't be stealing. I mean, well DUH. But that's not happening. Universities aren't providing me copies of textbooks I need, and I am desperate to find ANY way to get these books cheaper than buying them new from the damn Bookstore. So if this is a bad idea, how about explaining why you think what Amazon is doing, is bad? I'll admit, I haven't looked into it a ton to find all the problems with it... but if they are actually going to rent me a textbook (Which I see no problem with) at a discount of 80% for a set period of time... I fail to see what is so terrible about this. Sure, it's not as good as owning the textbook, making your own notes, and being able to reference it many years later... but when you're a broke student, you have to make do with a lot of things that aren't as good as an alternative.

Is that someone you ACTUALLY want to make your long term girlfriend? I mean sure, if you just wanted to get laid that would be different, but seriously, I feel confident in saying you didn't miss out on anything big.

The other thing, you aren't being invited to the "cool" parties? So fucking what? It's worth missing out on the "cool" parties to know who your real friends are. The ones who will actually call you to invite you to things. The ones who will make an effort to touch base with you and hang out, just like you'll do the same for them. Facebook is the Internet equivalent of high school friendships. People you can pretend are your friends because you see them everyday and chat about trivial shit. But when push comes to shove, and neither of you are willing to put forward any effort to keep the friendship going (IE: You don't see each other at high school anymore) you know it wasn't really a solid friendship to begin with. Why you would MISS having so many frivolous "friends" is beyond me. They're just filler between the real friendships you have, and I personally don't need that filler.

Maybe they know he died a year ago from kidney failure and the U.S. government wants to take credit, but you can bet that bin Laden is dead right now.
