  1. Surprise on Supersonic Flight Without The Sonic Boom · · Score: 1

After reading just the first paragraph I could tell it was taken from somewhere else, no one writes like that in a damn slashdot post. It's always gratifying when someone knows where it came from and links to it though... makes the original poster look like that much more of a fucker. :)

  3. Right.... on Statistically Optimal Music · · Score: 1

A common way to do this is to replay the last buffer. If the outage is long this tends to generate a metallic buzz if the buffer is short and a "Max Headroom"-style stutter if the buffer is long.

I dont know what player *YOU* use, but I've never had a player that replays the last buffer. All I've ever used just completely stops, waiting for the data to come in... Of course, I'm not uber l33t lunix hax0r that you sound to be.

  7. The real hit on Nicotine-Free Cigs, Genetically Engineered · · Score: 2, Insightful

What's a hit to their bottom line is being forced to air advertisements discouraging use of their own product! You don't see that every day :) I've always found this very amusing.

On topic, I use to smoke a lot, for maybe 5 years. I still smoke occasionaly when I go out to bars or whatever but am fine not smoking for long periods of time. Nicotine is only a small part of the addiction, for me anyways. As a parent post pointed out (I think), the addiction is just as much about the act of smoking. That's why things like gum and patches, while certainly helpful, don't have the success rate for quiting that one might expect. Cigarettes become such a part of your life after a while, after a big meal, while drinking, first thing in the morning, after sex, driving in the car, talking on the phone, using your computer, blah blah blah... They become associated with everything that you do and when you take that all away... it's very hard to deal with.

One other thing that makes it very hard is by smoking, you meet other smokers. Said smokers become your friends. When you try to quit, all your friends all around you are still smoking. IF you dont have to see it, its not too bad, but being around chain smokers while trying not to smoke really sucks ass. I wasnt able to quit until I graduated college and moved away from most of my friends. Finally I was free of being around cigaretes all the time, and that's what made the biggest difference for me.

I was just doing some christmas shopping yesterday on Amazon, and it was also the first time I've ever actually bought something on Amazon. (I know, where have I been??).

I was reading a bunch of the customer reviews, and noticed how a lot of the "featured" ones also had the "Top 500 Reviewer", "Top 10 Reviewer" (etc) graphics next to their review. So then I went to all of these people's review pages and noticed how all of these "Top" reviewers reviews were totally skewed towards the positive. 9/10 are 5 stars, with an occasional 4 star. And Gail Cooke was one of the ones that stood out.

Before I commited to anything, I went to epinions first to read some "real" reviews. Most of the reviews on amazon are just garbage.

Pointless post, I know, just weird that I was going through the exact same thing last night. :)

  12. NIce exageration on AT&T/Comcast Consider Aussie-Style Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

Maybe you've just had REALLY bad luck, but I've had excite and then at&t cable for almost 4 years now. In that time, I've had 4 outages, only one of them lasting more than 24 hours. That's no big deal. Latency is fantastic (40ms is common for online games). I'm pleased as punch with their service. I can't help but think you're exagerating. I admit their customer service is bad, but what company's isn't? Remember, you're not talking to AT&T when you call, you're talking to whatever company they've outsourced their support to.

And where the fuck do you get 56k for $10/mo? If you're talking about NetZero or Juno, I'm afraid I'll have to laugh in your general direction. Surfing the internet through them feels like AOL dipped in molassis at 0 degrees kelvin.

This isn't correct. The last models of ibook, which I think came out in february or so (I have one), have a Radeon that supports quartz extreme, and OSX is plenty fast with jaguar. The radeon 7500 is a nice bump though, especially since it has 32 instead of 16 megs of VRAM.

  14. Don't read slashdot much, do you? on Ogg Support For iTunes · · Score: 2, Insightful

Everytime there's a discussion on mp3s here it always turns into a "i like ogg better waaaaa" "i like mp3 better waaaa" bitchfest.

I dont give a flying fuck if ogg is better personally, I already have way too much time (encoding 100s of cds) and money ($400 ipod) invested in mp3's. Besides, both LAME and iTunes encode mp3's that sound VERY nice at 192kbps... lots of mp3s you get from the internet sound like crap because they're encoded by Little Billy (age 7) or smoeone really stupid who doesnt know how to change the default settings in their crappy encoder. These are the mp3's everyone hears and says "oh mp3 sucks!".. but the ones I encode, I can't tell apart from the CD.

I have no problems with people liking or using OGG, it's just that there is absolutely zero reason for me to switch.

  15. Re:Yes on Phoenix 0.4 Released · · Score: 1

I disagree about the opera statement. I have been a user of opera for a while and have the latest version installed (6.05) but it is NOT faster than phoenix. ANd besides, even if it was a little slower, it's WAY more standards compliant and is much more successful at rendering the majority of the pages out there. That's one reason I never really used opera that much.
