Everyone is railing against this as if it is doing some personal harm when all this is about is allowing rentals without worrying about returning the DVD.
Now grocery stores can sell DVDs in the check out lane for $5. When you want to watch it, you take it out of the package and now you have two days to see the movie. No one in their right mind would watch Lord of the Rings special extended ultramega DVD this way as it takes a week to watch all the extra stuff, but for Disney Cartoon #a004-d this is perfect.
It isn't about anti-copying really, it is about not having to set up a system to track returns. My only key concern is they've set up a shelf-life for media that stores now have to worry about. So instead of having a copy of every possible movie, the stores will only stock the movies that get rented constantly. So much for getting "Escape to Witch Mountain" on DVD this way.
It is human nature to 'tune out' ads. They are so pervasive, it is the only way to accomplish anything. If I responded to every ad I see on a website, I wouldn't have time to actually do what I intended to do at the website.
With that element an accepted fact of advertising (people block out billboards, use TV commercials to grab something from the other room, flip channels on the radio when the 9 minutes of ads come on, and flip the ad pages in magazines to get to the content) advertisers still continue. Why? For that one or two people out of a thousand who respond to the ad.
I've done it. I see an interesting ad and I actually watch it. Or I see a banner ad for something unique and I click on it. Text ads are the same way, except I am more likley to read them (usually contain more information) and less likely to be annoyed by them (rarely flash, "vibrate", or make noise.)
A guy did something. He thought it was cool and wanted to share and a guy here agreed and posted it to the front page. If you don't like it, stfu and don't read the article. Freedom, its a powerful thing. Yes, you are free to criticize, but look at what you are criticizing, a guy who wanted to mod something. I don't care if it could have been purchased cheaper, if it is of limited use, that he didn't have beautiful panaramic pictures of HO scale Grand Canyon. I care that I learned something new, I learned that model railroad enthusiasts want cameras on their trains. I don't know how valuable that info is to me at this time, but now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
There is no lawsuit regarding this issue, the article merely said it was considered, but most likely they were presented with the fact that there are several libraries that look like this.
It isn't about giving the college credit, it is about giving the person who designed it credit, and lets face it, it means nothing to Lucas to give credit but would be a nice boost to an already prestigious institution.
To tell the truth, I haven't completed the NWN module that came with the game. It didn't hold my interest. I started work right away in creating modules. I think that is the essence of what I like and why I didn't like EQ or DAoC. In both games I wanted the simple ability to be able to write a note and leave it for someone. Heaven forbid they give you the simple ability to create your own stories within the framework of their world without having to resort to out-of-game websites.
I'll be playing/building NWN for a long time, especially since there is no extra charge applied to playing and Bioware keeps coming out with new modules to play.
I find MMPORPG's really annoying. I find the people annoying, I find the experience annoying, and I find paying for the annoyance annoying.
I loved EQ for the first 3 months of play, but realized I just don't have the time to focus on 'levelling' and after accomplishing my first big quest and getting a nift item, I realized everyone will do that quest, kill that monster, get that item. My actions don't change the world one iota.
So I gave up and waited for DAoC. It at least allowed the world to be affected through the PvP/realm vs realm option, which was a cool concept. I played, found a group of people to play with who played in character and didn't metagame -- but of course they all played 4-6 hours a day while I could only play 4-6 hours a week. Thus they quickly increased in level and I didn't, which means I couldn't join them on group adventures because I wouldn't get any xp.
Now we come to Neverwinter Nights which so far is exactly what I've always wanted. I can create the world, I can play in the world with other people, and our actions can change the world. And I don't have to be annoyed by yet another meaningless online wedding/funeral/whatever.
You are right, the RIAA wants people to think it is inevitable that their way will be THE way.
The only way to stop it is for the Artists to take a stand and reject the system. Artist's should form their own record label (too bad United Artists is already taken) and create the system the consumer's want.
It may mean the artist has to forego SuperStardom but I think that is a good thing. A musician is just an entertainer and isn't necessarily deserving of any more idolation that he/she can muster on his/her own.
Who's making your coffee? I'm not keen on sweat and creamy, I like the bitter edge that coffee has, but when made correctly, isn't rancid at all.
I definately agree, don't drink rancid coffee.

I don't know if this was said tongue in cheek or not but that is exactly what needs to be done. An organized protest where people take the cd's they have and have them destroyed in a public ceremony. Thousands upon thousands of cds being crushed or melted or whatever as thousands more gather round with anti-RIAA banners. Get speakers to give fiery speeches about a consumer driven economy and get a variety of musicians and artists to give speeches on how they've earned more money because of file sharing (janisian.com). Get lots of news coverage and one or two articulate spokespeople.
is correct or else the time honored joke about the rancher who looked out at his pasteur after an earthquake to see all the cows sprawled on the ground but the steer still standing would be incorrect. See, the rancher asked the steer why he was still standing when all the cows had fallen. It replied, "We Bulls wobble, but we don't fall down."
The reality is sometimes campus isn't located conveniently next to a bank. Or, as it was in my case, the bank charges a service fee for change if you aren't a member.
You mean its the middle of the night and I want to watch the 'Salty Wench' on ppv.
The money that is being wasted is in the hardware sitting on the desk. They have systems that allow Diablo II to be played and the software needed to do business at the same time. It's your company's call, I just know if I was in charge, I'd be making different decisions.
Okay, I'm not the most productive person at all times. I've been known to play a game or two of bedazzled at work, but come on, you are at work. You really want to play CivIII or TheSims? If you do, you aren't just stealing a little bit of time and performance from your company, you are guilty of severe underperformance. I don't care if you get all your work done and have 3 hours to kill. At my job, if a person has free time, then they have time to help someone else do menial tasks. There is always filing that needs to be done.
Steal some time to play Solitaire or Tetris, some other simple game that can be played will checking voicemail or sitting in on a conference call.
And how the hell do you let go of a fine, fine blonde for a game?
If she is an annoying human being, the choice would be pretty simple.

Are they dying? No, they are settling.
They should just alter the name from Strawberry Shortcake to something like Raspberry Cheesecake.
Why dont' I have mod points when I truly see something that is funny. This post was hilarious!
More than likely the goal is to know that they are hiring someone who is not in a desperate financial situation
Because the last person who you should hire is the person who needs the money.

When is this technology going to be incorporated into games? I want to raise an army and send it against my foes!!

tough times call for tough decisions, but sometimes the decisions are pretty simple.
Lately I've been buying my CD's at concerts I go to. Not really a statement, just how I've been doing it.
Wouldn't it make more sense for NPR to write a policy that OK's all links but allows them to reserve the right to block links from specific referrers?
This gives them control, allows sites to get the links you know NPR is approving, and only requires technical response to deal with abusers.

Wait, isn't that what Bush is doing?
When asked why you are cancelling, don't tell them the truth, lie.
AOL REP: And why do you want to cancel your account?
ME: I've converted my religion and am no longer allowed to use computers.
AOL REP: That doesn't sound legitimate.
ME: Are you questioning my faith, because if you are, that would be discrimination. My church has lawyers to deal with this kind of thing.
...but not as violent as a curbstomp.
