  1. Sounds similar to our setup on Google Gets Slack with Software Updates · · Score: 5, Interesting

We run Ubuntu in my department and ended up building an in-house Apt repository/svn/rsync system to maintain all our machines. We also use custom scripts that monitor NFS shares to emergency push operations. Obviously our down side is that an entire .deb package must be rebuilt for each change, but it's nice to see Google's method isn't out of this world after all.

  2. The music sucks on Does File-Sharing Really Hurt the Music Biz? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Said it before, say it again. It's not the Internet, it's the product. Music today sucks compared to years ago. I just have no desire to pay $18 for a CD when I could buy the DVD with full video for the same price.

The same applies to movies. Torrents aren't killing your ticket sales.. Your crappy movies are killing ticket sales.

"Honey, do these jeans make my butt look fat?"
"No, your fat butt makes your butt look fat."

    See the concept?

  3. I think it will work for the price point on Will the Wii Work? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm a 23 year old PC gamer. The only consoles I own are PS1, SNES, and NES. I do all my gaming on my PC (Wintel). My room mate got a PS2, which I never play, and while the 360 looks killer, I won't buy it for the price.

A $250 Wii? HELL YES! The price point alone is what does it for me. That and the new controller just makes it a lot more interesting then the same old systems with new graphics.

I think this will work really well for them. This will be the christmas present to buy for years to come.

  4. Wrong all along on The Core Gamer a Myth? · · Score: 1

I would expect any one who plays games to know that the real hardcore group is children. While I my self at 23 play a great deal of games, I still acknowledge my responsibilities and don't spend 14 hours a day playing like most kids will over weekends.

This can be filed under the "duh!" category..

I'm sorry but I just finished Episode one this last weekend and I felt robbed. When the end came, I was shocked. I couldn't believe "that was it". I wait how long for this? That took me how little time to complete? That was all the story you're going to give me?

    *sigh*

I was really pissed to be honest.. I wanted some answers and all I got was more questions. The story was so lacking.

There needs to probably be some middle ground legally regarding what is and is not secure. It makes no sense that, say, accessing a windows share drive (or AFS cell if you like real network filesystems) out there on the internet with no passwords, no encryption, no attempt at all at security should be legally considered breaking and entering or whatever non-applicable metaphor the courts have wedged into computer case law. Nor should accessing an unprotected wireless connection be considered this, since many OSes will do that without asking.

I usually would say that the reply is "if I leave my front door unlocked and open, is it legal for you to come into my house and look through my property?"

But, I have to agree with the foundation of what you are saying. He DID break the law.. He "trespassed", he did not commit a crime like "breaking and entering".

His punishment should be based on the actual crime committed.

Part of the problem is that the user wants the answer to his question. While the elitists want to teach the user to learn on his own. What makes me successful at my job is not what I know, but how well I can learn and adopt. Most Geeks try to teach this instead of simply answering the question. They won't tell you exactly what you need to know, but they will try to lead you in the direction to find it, and lots of other useful bits of information.

But, there are some down right jerks who just get off on thinking they know it all. All I know, is that I have a lot more to learn everyday.

  13. Back to the Parents on Games Lead To Violence and Drugs? · · Score: 0, Redundant

My parents don't smoke and do not drink. All of my relatives do. Alcoholism runs in the family. Neither my sister nor I drink. I have never been drunk. I am 23 years old.

I play MANY hours of violent video games. I love GTA 3 and getting drunk in games like WoW. But back in the real world, I never do either of this. Why? Because of the influence my parents had on me. By setting them selves as a role model that didn't promote drinking, I was never even tempted to do it.

Many things can influence people in our lives.. But it's the parents job to be the counter balance to these distractions.

    It does work.
