I think that while we'll continue to see proprietary technology like UnrealEd, DromEd, Radiant, etc. in the game development world, there will also be a push towards engine technology that is directly compatible with the tools that are already on the market.
Making it easier for people with Lightwave, Maya, Max, Nendo, Mirai, et al, to contribute directly to game content without jumping over any hurdles is a win-win situation for both the gaming community and the companies that make these products.

There's always the argument that teenagers can't afford Max or Lightwave, but somehow they still manage to create whole sites of tutorials based on such software ;) In the end, these kids are growing up to become more than just members of the community, and will be purchasing licenses for these packages for work.

It only makes sense for companies, in both a business and ease-of-use sense, to move away from the proprietary, and towards more open design standards that profit everyone.

If people are buying an XBox for other missions, and don't buy games, then it's costing MS money. If I weren't so cash-strapped at the moment, I would consider doing this. Imagine spending money on a Microsoft product and hurting their bottom line.

It's funny how often I've seen similar statements in Xbox threads. If Microsoft is evil, and Linux is the path to all that is good and right with the world, then why don't you spend the money to help Linux developers instead of planning to screw Microsoft by buying MS products. I wouldn't be surprised if the console losses are tax-deductible.

Personally I thought the Xbox was worth the money and got one for the games and ability to watch DVDs.

Your intentions are well placed, but don't take into account the fact that after the coaster is built it's more a factor of maintenance than design. If the coaster isn't properly maintained and inspected then those G forces may take a toll on components that results in a fatality.
If the designer is held accountable for someone elses failing how does that improve the situation?

When I was a contractor, I was worth about 20 dollars an hour...the company I worked for charged Compaq $80 an hour, and they in turn charged the government $115 an hour for my services.
The sad thing was that what was supposed to be a network admin job (on NT4, yes I can hear the boos and hisses) turned out to be an endless parade of Win98 installs via Ghost in order to beat Y2K.
During a particularly slack time a few of us had a 2 week period with nothing to do, so I introduced the other guys to the Quake 2 demo (it was all that would run on those crappy compaqs decently).
We figured out that with the average charges of our different companies we cost taxpayers about 41,000+ dollars for our little Quake 2 break. :)

Ah, but you actually met, that's the difference. I believe the intent of the previous posters message was to relate to the online-only friendships.
I've probably met thousands of people online in the last few years, and still keep in touch with a few, but none have the intrinsic value of friends that I have experienced in person.
I've found there is a much greater sense of loss when I must walk away from someone I have known personally, rather than one I have known digitally.
If the friendship moves beyond the online stage then it is much more likely to survive the petty squabbles and such that sometimes arise online due to misunderstandings, or the simple bad choice of a phrase.
Then again, it depends on how deeply one is entrenched in online communities. Persistent communities are more likely to experience extended relationships than transitory states like IRC.

  25. Re:The Course of Wisdom on Police Database Lists 'Future Criminals' · · Score: 2

The story is extremely brief and most likely contains only the information required to inflame the public and sell more copies of the paper.

There could be many arguments for or against what they're doing and why they're doing it.

It could help out the cop new to the beat by identifying people in the area who have no criminal record, but are known to associate with known felons or simply haven't been caught. There are lots of people with 'clean records' that the cops have arrested only to have charges thrown out of court due to technicalities, lack of evidence, or biased judges.

On the other hand if the new cop on the beat sees a list of minorities and has the attitude that "they all look the same to me" or is a more active racist then he's going to use that list to persecute people with or without good reason.

Either way people on here can argue it back and forth but the facts aren't forthcoming so it's not really fair to anyone to say whether they're doing the right or wrong thing.
