You need to charge more:-). I only do network support now, but obviously some PC support is involved. When I tell someone it's going to cost them at least $125 to fix their PC, or $389 to get a new one from Dell they start thinking....
Just my opinion of course but instant messaging etc. has just served to make people unable to think.
Don't know how to do something? Don't bother with the manual or anything, just call tech support. I swear no one can make a decision on wiping their rear without consulting someone else.
Grocery shopping sucks. THere used to be 2 brands of mustard, ketchup, pickles, soap etc. Now there are evidently at least 50 of each. I guess I agree it's better now, especially since I like going to the grocery store (My Publix has many cute cashiers). But it's not MUCH better, and I know those poor old folks clogging the aisles think it's worse.
Wrong. Old OS's are insecure because a) they weren't really designed for the Internet and b) ease of use. Security is hard. You have to remember passwords. You have to get an admin to install software. Etc. And of course you are still running kernel 1.1 right?
It's why I don't support end-users anymore. $349 gets you a brand new Dell. Fixing PC's is becoming pointless. I haven't fixed anything except a dead hard drive in years.
SO have them spend $349 and charge them $75 to add their old HD as a slave and reinstall their software and recustomize. You'll make more money with less work. I promise.
The whole point of SLashdot is to bash MCSE's and Windows, while not knowing anything about a version of Windows since 98. IF you know about sysprep, riprep, RIS, SUS, how to slipstream a service pack into the seup, group policies, administrative templates, or any of that, why you must be a loser.
YOu've obviously never patched anything on Windows because not all patches require a reboot. But if you knew anything about Windows, you wouldn't be able to bash it as much.
Go ahead. You won't get hired without it. Of course your next job will pay 50% less than what you're making now.
Get the band back together too. Good for a couple hundred a week if you get good.

Since the only time I get to listen to music is in my car, I cannot tell the diference at all between a prerecorded CD or 128k mp3. The road noise, A/C etc all drown out the fine details.
How does it help you get back that deleted file from last year? How does it help you take your data to a secure offsite location in case of disaster? Why isn't it cheaper than just buying a second hard drive and mirroring it? Why would anyone use this except people who still run win98? Even those losers could buy a cheap removable hard drive cage and an IDE raid controller, then even take the drive off site.

It's like getting my kids to rake the yard. 4 times as long as it would have taken me and a shittier job. Just get out of the way & I'll fix it.
FOrtunately 98 is finally purged, all users are restricted users in 2k or XP and I spend my days on slashdot.........
Oh, I got legal tools that would let me crack the local admin password in seconds if I have physical access. NOw, if you password protect the bios & disable boot from floppy & cd, you might have a start but again if I have physical access I know I can reset the desktops. Laptops might be harder, but I'll get there. Encrypt the critical files & remove the local admin from the recovery agents (not there by default if it's XP on ad domain member, and your data should be safe.
OK, I'm interested, please contact me.

well, getting to your home box means you're not joe user. Getting in remotely to your office computer, that means you're working from home. I've got people who are really really not computer literate coming in from home. They certainly could not have figured out how to do it themselves, though.
I just went to class and took notes (actually I went to the first class, found some girl and stole notes from her for the rest of the semester) and checked the text out of the library.
they normally had several copies of the required materials, I never had a problem getting the texts.
I'd say the only thing my PDA is useful for is playing MP3's. Other than that I get better results with a pocket-sized, paper, calendar thingy. It never runs out of batteries, if I lose it it's cheap to replace, I can sit on it and not break it, it cost $1.49 in the first place.
Yeah, I can't play freecell. I don't care.

Everybody should have one. Then we'd all be safe.

Wonder how much it pays to be an admin in your school? Probably not much.

I meet all the qualifications.
hey - howcum you're on slashdot if you actually know how to use NTBACKUP and the difference between sysprep & riprep? SHouldn't you b ebanned? :-)
I see VCR's at yard sales for a buck. Brand new they're $30 at Winn-Dixie for crying out loud, 4 head, stereo!
stop whining, if you got old 8-tracks you can still buy the players.
fun job = a) very scarce or b) real low paying or c) both of the above. Install Win2003, collect your check, and go do something fun after work.
Are you sure I can't have both?
roger, we have confirmation. I mean, yeah, it was 469.00 with XP Pro AND Office XP pro, so a compromise was inevitable but still..........
they're making money, that makes 'em dotcom2
