Ahhh, but there's a lot to be said for either surprising or misleading your actors, in order to get the reaction you want on screen. Another example I can think of is the alien birth scene in the first "Alien". Ridley Scott didn't let the actors in on that page of the script. The surprise, shock, and disgust you see onscreen is genuine and unscripted. I can't find a transcript online, so you'll have to see the film.
Some directors are infamous for witholding information from actors, to keep precisely what you describe from happening.
I'd love to see a reverse angle shot disclosing what the hell Scott has his sfx crew work up to get that reaction.
That is an interesting take, which leads me to wonder, perhaps Mars isn't quite as hosile as the engineers originally thought.
Wait, before you flame me (oh, go ahead), consider this. The engineers made certain assumptions regarding how abrasive / corrosive the Martian dust is, how difficult it would be to move around in, how the materials the rovers are constructed from would react to the atmosphere / uv exposure / etc.
While it is obviously a hostile environment, perhaps it is not quite as hostile as we've originally thought.
You betcha. The man was remarkably prescient.
Next up, Shalmaneser(from Stand on Zanzibar), brought to you by Google.
IMHO, every geek, especially media/internet geeks, should read it.
Sorry about using the currently overused new business / new economics buzzword, but this seems to me to be another variation on "The Long Tail" (see: Wired, Chris Anderson, Wikipedia), where you build a business based upon selling many different things with relatively low demand at relatively low volumes, instead of a small number of blockbusters at huge volume.
While this makes horse-sense to me, I'd still like to see some numbers. There have to be some examples out there. I wonder if ringtone sales work the same way?
Interesting.
Gatto seems to be an anti compulsary public schooling activist. I don't know if I trust his interpretation of the data. I'd rather see the data and know exactly how he interpreted it and reached his conclusions.
I thought by now everyone knew never to sign an entertainment industry contract for a percentage of net! It's always a percentage of gross + a percentage of gross sales of ancillaries (dolls & games & swords & such). But then, I grew up in Los Angeles, where parents teach their kids these things in their cribs.
All in all, I can see how having a film star helps in the beginning, but it looks like you've overstated your case by a huge margin, to the point where it looks demonstrably false.

If I ask the woodchuck question or fail to grovel, will I get lashed with a wet noodle?
Ewwwwwwww!
Happy Birthday!
Brilliant. I truly wish I had mod points today.
They seem to be surprised at the furor. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.2 0060421.IBPHILIPS21/TPStory/TPBusiness/
They're in damage control mode now, but what will happen when the noise and fury dies down???
Can you define "NT" versus "non-NT"? I haven't heard the terms before.
I'd recommend keeping it civil, thoughtful, polite, on topic, etc., and leaving the vitriol on Slashdot, where it belongs. ;-)
How much damage has been done at little companies liks, GM, or Boeing, or Citigroup?
What will happen when their lawers going after Sony?
You really must read (or see the play) Wicked. Totally up your alley.

Are we (the U.S.A.) still bound by the Geneva Conventions? Is that one of the treaties we've recently abrogated?
No, there is no such thing as too much Frank Herbert. As far as Brian Herbert goes, a little goes a long, long, long way.
The next time someone dies while working, can we get work banned? Heh!
All. Religions. Fictional.

So, how much would it cost to get the all of the classics as Dover Thrifts???
Another problem with using the Lancaster Amish as a control group is their relative lack of genetic diversity (due to the founder effect, combined with restrictive marriage practices). Remember, these are the folks who had to start having arranged marriages with Ohio Amish, in order to combat an increasing incidence of Dwarfism.
But hey, we're geeks! There is a technological solution to everything.
What if, when you purchase something (anything) there is one-time-only login code on your receipt. Make it good for an hour. Perhaps 90 minutes.
When you buy something else, your login is renewed (or you're issued a new one).
