the box featured an ugly, blue, zombie-looking man, with dreadlocks. the game itself was one of the best RPGs ever, but the grandparent's right; the box was ugly.
3DR is spending all of their own cash (yes kids, Duke Nukem is a profitable franchise!)
I'm pretty sure that Duke Nukem isn't responsible for even half of their current income. Max Payne and Max Payne 2 are probably more responsible for 3D Realms current cash flow.
If 3D Realms is looking to create the perfect game, they truely will be at it forever, because no one game is going to blow everyone away and make them lose touch of reality, just to get "one more minute" of game time.
They've changed engines 3 times, which is a sign that they're struggling to keep up with technology, but don't know how. The Quake 3 engine, which was made in 1999 is STILL being used in games today and it still looks good. No, the reason why they're not releasing anything is more likely because they don't want to embaress themselves. Even if they're on the razor's edge of technology, so is id, bungie and sierra. The best they could hope for is to tie with one of them and tying just isn't good enough to win people over.
The only way 3DR is going to be able to sell DNF is with Duke's attitude and fun-factor and the code has next to nothing to do with either of those.
Someone's screwing up the DNF team or the DNF team itself is screwed up.
I don't think I've ever seen an eye-gouge in a fighting game. also a good deal of submission fighting moves are unexplored.
that's about all I can think of, though, and I have extensive training in various martial arts. the eye-gouge is probably just too evil to add in and submission fighting moves don't translate well into games, no matter how hard Crave tries to market UFC.
A better solution might be to persuade millions of end users to SECURE THEIR FUCKING COMPUTERS, especially when they're on high speed connections. The best approach I've seen so far is that grey-hat hackers need to break in and really trash every hackable box they can find. After a few tedious reinstalls people will learn not to put an insecure machine on the net. Even stupid people, eventually.
The problem is that most of the people those people are going to be messing with aren't going to understand what happened, nor how to fix it properly. They'll just download something that claims to protect them, but just opens them up to more attacks.
a really direct solution would be to make up a few JPGs, each one has text plainly stating that they've been hacked and what they need to do to secure themselves. Considering that most of the wide-open boxes fall into a few different solutions, you wouldn't have to make very many of them.
then upload the pertinent file and set it as their desktop background image.
I don't go around breaking into people's systems, so I don't know of the difficulty factor in doing it, but a big chunk of text on their desktop explaining that they've been hacked and need to fix themselves would get attention REALLY fast from the users.
indeed. This is total bullshit. because of some bugs with my DVD drive's drivers, Raven Shield would ignore my CD in the drive and I wound up HAVING to use Alcohol's virtual drive feature in order for the game to run at all.
Now they're telling me that my work around is evil and I have to crack the game just to play it?
I bought the fucking thing and I've yet to play the game without having to do something sneaky with the CD detection scheme and it doesn't look like I will.
I would rather have a panel of people that understand the law and are at least somewhat educated deciding my fate than easily swayed sheep that were picked at random from a pool of registered voters/liscensed drivers.

instead of making VR arenas, what about having the player run on a giant trackball?
it bounced back today, the day they went public with it.
I think that the increased media coverage is actually helping the interest in their crummy product.
I wouldn't be surprised if nokia was actually assisting the hacking effort. actually, considering the dev-friendly attitude on nokia's forums, I'd say that they DID encourage it to happen, for precisely this reason.
why are we going to mod something up when there are several thousand people making the same reference? it was funny for a little while, but now it's time to take off every zig.
On one hand you mention modern games on the other you say Q2 and HL are all you need. Which is it?
I meant that if all you're looking for in games is a blazingly fast frame rate, you don't need games that have all the bells and whistles; the classics will serve you just fine. now, if you appreciate all the amazing things that they're doing with graphics engines these days, you're going to have to take the hit on frames per second. while some people can afford to keep SOTA so as to have all the graphics options on and keep an insane frame rate, most can't and we're happy with 30-60fps.
and I maintain that most monitors don't support 100fps. yeah, some do and it's nice that you have one that does, but look around stores and check the specs on them. the vast majority are not capable of running at 100Hz. you'll see that most top out around 60-85.
been playing first person shooters since wolfenstein3d. 60 fps is fine. I'll put up with 30 if I get all the pretty graphics options with it. most monitors don't support 100fps, anyways.
about the only way you're going to get 100fps in most modern games is to shut off all graphical detail and play in about 800X600. if you're playing with that level of detail, there's no real reason to play any of the new games. quake II, halflife and all the mods for them will give you everything you need.
I may be out of the loop, but I was under the impression that you still had to solder the contacts to make the BIOS writable. I used the 007 gamesave hack to flash my BIOS after doing so. I'm not thoroughly immersed in the xbox hacking scene, but I haven't seen any method that allows you to rewrite or bypass the BIOS without using a modchip or playing with solder.
the concept of food chains and ecosystems stopped applying to the human race around the bronze age and have only become less applicable since.
it's not a narcissistic comment, it's a pragmatic one. while having a pristine planet may have once been a grand idea, technology has stripped that possibility away a long time ago. it's possible to strike a balance between the world of greenery and the world of concrete, but it's simply no longer possible to have an Earth without counting in large human habitats.
Here's a link to it

go to hell, Ubisoft.

oh, come on. the guy pulled off a nice double entendre. VP Dick Cheney has a pacemaker and Bush is probably impotent.
I have something else you can do with an AOL CD.
some episodes are still avaliable on amazon and universal's site, and this guy is offering the entire series on VHS tapes he copied off the air.

well, I think that they must have put up *some* kind of effort. it just wasn't enough, obviously.
what, like an amazon link to buy them?

but will it support a keyboard and mouse if I "accidentally" spliced a USB hub onto a controller extender? :p
those options are in windows media player, also. :p
you might want to think of a different phrase for destroying a DVD before the MPAA comes looking for you. :p
