This is really amazing to me. They spend a chunk of coin on the system, barely get it up and running, don't actually use it for anything, and then run out and upgrade it 4 months later. Sounds like a typical home computer geek!
But really, shouldn't somebody be better managing the money there and saying 'hey go do something worthwhile with your new toy, then ask for more money'?
> According to this story, the shuttle mission was cancelled because of NASA's new focus of going to mars, given to us by the vision of George W Bush.
You are wrong. The issue is a very limited number of shuttle flights available and the need to finish that hunk of junk the ISS before the shuttle fleets are deemed unsafe. The cost of the required major retrofit of the shuttle fleet is prohibitive, and frankly a waste of money. Its less than a cost effective vehicle, and of questionable safety as well.
However, I do agree with others that if there is any way to slip in the service mission, its probably worth it even with the new scope going up. The limited amount of time availabe on any space telescope makes it a sin to not keep a more or less working one going. Lets all hope that finish the ISS ahead of schedule, just dont hold your breath.
the laptop is dead, but the screen was fine, a beautiful 15" lcd. Does anybody know how to reuse this somehow? Or can point to a sight with info? Thanks
seems to me have started about a year ago.. now its next to impossible to get any query back without the first page or two being all items for sale (almost without regard to what you are actually searching for). It would be nice if there were a way to have it default to searches that do not include stores selling merchandise. They can run all the ads they want down the right side of the page, just leave the search results alone.. pls!
but a good part of our Xmas Eve dinner was spent talking to a 30yr old woman (teacher) who detailed her life of caffeine addiction. There were many amusing stories from childhood of drinking the extra soda in the closet, trying to hide her coffee and soda use from her young students (whom she told 'its not good to drink soda in the morning').
But the bottom line is... she quit cold turkey. In her case, the headaches and very bad migraines were the medical symptoms of the caffeine addiction. After a very bad event, she stopped. This was about 6 months ago. From what she said, it wasn't nearly as difficult as she thought it would be, nothing like what people who smoke go through. Evenso, she now has a new addiction to seltzer!
I agree they seem suspicious, perhaps putting Kazaa at #1 was an effort to look legit? In any event looking at the rest of the page just confirms the decline of the internet into the abyss.
" Well the upper atmosphere is warming, but that can be easily explained by the weakening of the magnetic field which causes more radiation to hit the atmosphere in turn increasing the temperature in that region."
And lest you forget, solar activity in the past 50 years as been shown to be the highest in the past 1300 years.
Filing a lawsuit is legal.. trying to extort money from clients and others with no firm legal standing other than 'we say its so' is not. Hopefully some of the larger companies getting these letters will take it on themselves to file countersuits against SCO, and hopefully engage the justice dept. to file a RICO action.
No I am not arguing to spend 25K on a digital large format camera. I'm arguing on spending 5k in a few years. There will be no comparable drop in price in film equipment. Your orignal reply made it seem as if there just was no such thing, and certainly not available generally anytime soon.
As for resolution, you previously said he did most of his work at 20x30.. 140MP could go to 36x45 and still be 300dpi
In regards to why anybody would buy something today that will lose 80% of its value in 3 years... I would check your driveway or the box attached to your keyboard.
2) you are comparing apples and oranges. The costs to be compared are not film vs. digital back. You need to compare the cost of the 8x10 camerea system vs the cost of the equivalent digital system. My point was that in the near (as in 2-4 years) that $25,000 back will probably only cost $5,000 if past plunges in the price/Mpixel are any judge. By the way, how much does that 8x10 large format camera cost? Well.. a lower end model (new) would be 2 to $4,000. A high end Sinar would run you over $10,000.
3) Quality: 140MP in an 8x10 format would be 10837x13546 pixels. That works out to be 1355 dpi. I think thats well above acceptable resolution.
dude.. dont you read/.? From the story on the Gigapixel landscape print last week, on the guys page:
For example, the Canon 1Ds (about $8,000) captures 11 megapixels, while the BetterLight Super 10K-2 scanning back (camera not included!) captures 140 megapixels, but costs about $25,000. I also believe that a gigapixel image surpasses what even die-hard admirers of large format photography argue is possible with large format cameras. For more thoughts on this subject, you might also want to read this essay.
3 years from now that cost will be probably be near $5,000 which is definitely doable by the Pros.
I just checked out SwipeUSA. They say either you, the owner, can fill the machine or they will do it for you. Now this sounds to me like an open invitation for Tony and Vito to launder money. Put ATM's in as many places as you can, wether its a business you are already 'associated' with or not. Fill it with your dirty money, in comes clean money for your Grand Caymans front company. Sweep the money every night out of GCI to your account in a bank domiciled in a 'no reciprocity with USA' country.
1) Anybody who bought at those low prices knew something was either a) very wrong or b) very bad news was out. This was after all a $60 stock and they were now buying at $42. Without going into detail, I find it impossible they lost any money on options trades (no open exchange, prices were much higher when they did reopen).
2) Similar things have happend at CBOT and CME on their electronic stock index products a few times this past year. Most recently, a trader was said to have entered a stop/loss order in the less liquid Dow Jones futures for a very large amount. As CBOT handles S/L orders natively (internally), their system proceded to hit bids until the order was filled. Those trading S&P futuers did notice what was going on and started selling there as well, perhaps fearing a terrorist or other news related item. The sell off was not as far (500 Dow pts), in part because of the greater market depth, and the fact nobody could figure out what was going on. Trades were subsequently broken, hours later, on the CBOT, but NONE were cancelled on the CME. This caused quite a bit of pain for people who had s/l orders open which were executed, for all intents erroneously. (no not me, but I do know one who was). CME refused to cancel as the original event did not occur in house.
To this day, I do not believe the order was entered in error. I believe a hedge fund or other firm had a need to buy, and buy large. What better way to get filled then to trigger a large move in a closely correlated market (Dow futures) where you know the majority of the trades will be cancelled, and just sit on the bid in the other market (CME) as people panic sell. And do not rule out collusion.
I see no reason why I can't charge back any company/utility that bills me erroneously for the time that I must spend in finding the error, and subsequently arranging for them to fix it. Charge a nominal $30/hr and bill in minute increments.
is that *you* should be responsible for paying all fees necessary to accomodate *your* needs. If having the same number means that much to you then you should be more than willing to pay for it too.
So if the power goes out and it hits the track at that speed, with what force is it hitting and how are you so sure that this won't cause signficant damage to the track, perhaps ripping up a section? It would only take one or two for the train to start to look like an accordian.
and find IRC to be the saving grace. I used to be in a very high interaction job, and the loss of personal interaction has taken quite a bit of getting used to. I also got a dog... hey it helps!
'they put the rf tag just over my kidney and while I was sleeping somebody cut it out!'
I mean really.. this is silly. In an age when in big cities you need to be concerned with atm and other card theft at teller machines, how long before we see the stories about forced extraction?

All these low powered clusters are fine and well, but what is the state of supercomputing for problems that really arent parallizable?
First Linux, then "BSD next year". Can Windows be far behind? I'm curious what the BSD people think of being targeted next.
