Ok, well the most obvious argument is "How do we learn without doing research?" We already know the "theoretical level" ...which is why people want to pursue research to begin with.

That aside, who decides on the ethical standards? Who decides when we've learned enough "background" to proceed with experiments? Historically speaking there is no way...there will always be people that disagree and there will always be those who think we should put something off until we have a better understanding.

So, instead we should all hide away in some barren field where cars have no chances of wrecking into our houses, we have no nasty power lines to give us illnesses, no trees in the area to fall on the house, no animals around to carry off the children, no streams that could potentially be contaminated, safe altitude to avoid flooding--but not too high so that a plane might fly into your house!...hell, we shouldn't even live in houses because those are dangerous...they might catch fire or something might fall off a shelf and nail someone in the head!

My point being: I can understand the concern to an extent but do people really stop and think about the hundreds of other things that put our lives in danger on a daily basis that we never think about?

I live near a nuclear plant. Certainly not within 2 miles as its an industrial area with no residents...but close enough to know the evacuation routes. I can't say I've ever been concerned about it. There are a hundred other things more likely to happen and more hazardous to my healthin on any given day.

    I couldn't agree more.

I was excited to watch the first season since it was something to fill the gap left by Voyager.

Yes, sorry...I'm the sole fan of Voyager. Probably only because I didn't watch anything Trek until after DS9 and TNG were gone. (Although I certainly caught up on those series as well)

I don't even remember the second season. Then we had the third, with that Xindi crap. Overall I thought it was good that they decided to stick with a story arc for a change...but as someone above already mentioned it seemed like nothing more than "Osama in Space"

Then we were given season 4. With the exception of the space nazis I found it to be a vast improvement over the first three seasons. The 3-part arcs were decent and Enterprise finally went back to exploring space for a change.

The transporter episode sucked. It was nothing more than a rehashed Voyager plot (Which, no doubt, came from an earlier series) where MAD_SCIENTIST uses a transporter to correct ATROCITY_A.

Still...I'm not sure it's the writing that is a problem this season. The acting itself seems dry. The ship/sets seem about as big as a closet.

After the last Trek story on /. I saw people commenting on BSG. I decided to watch it and after seeing the miniseries and entire first season I can understand why Enterprise is failing.

In a way I'm upset over the news--I'm holding out for a 2nd season of BSG though...if that doesn't happen I'll really be angry.

You entirely missed the point. The question raised wasn't "Could the Columbia crew have been saved WHILE it broke up?"

Rather, it was "Could we have realized the problem while in orbit and kept the shuttle in orbit long enough to rescue the crew in some way?"

It's unlikely the crew could have been saved even if the severity of the problem had been realized since it would have taken days if not weeks to prep another shuttle.

This is why they're going to prep another shuttle for possible rescue--so that if something goes wrong and the crew has to remain in orbit, they can launch a rescue within a reasonable amount of time.

I'm not sure the industry is going to get any more off its feet as far as additional competition.

This isn't exactly like a Windows -vs- Linux battle because these are both pieces of software that more often than not will run on the same hardware.

In the case of satellite radio you have to buy hardware specific to that company. I'd equate this more to Betamax -vs- VHS. Betamax may have been a superior format but for those who already had VHS, what incentive was there to buy another piece of proprietary hardware?

Of course there are kits that allow you to use satellite radio with a head unit that doesn't come satellite-ready that would allow switching, but even then you're still having to buy more proprietary hardware.

For there to be any new competition in the market, there is going to have to be innovation that takes satellite radio beyond its current form because nobody is going to care if yet another company pops up with commercial-free satellite radio that is identical to the others except for 1) Company name 2) Content offered.

No, it better be the WORST feeling for them. They can't even keep the servers up for the existing players to play.

Many will tell you that the servers were "down" from Thursday through Sunday regardless of whether or not the official status was "up." That's in addition to the 16 hours of scheduled downtime on Thursday.

The kicker? The 16 hour downtime to fix the problem actually made it even worse. That's when they introduced even more population caps without first informing the customers. Now players can sit in queues for anywhere between 1 to 3 hours...and if they're lucky enough to wait that long and log in, they may get 10 minutes of actual playtime before they get booted out of the game or lag out and forced to sit in the queue yet again.

This isn't just a problem for the high population servers, it's affecting even the low population servers. What does this mean? Nobody but Blizzard themselves can say with any certainty...but I'm willing to bet this has nothing to do with the popularity of the game and how many copies were sold. My guess is they have a poorly designed backend/database system that is simply broken and cannot be fixed even by throwing more hardware at the issue.
