  15. Re:Results not surprising... on Musicians on Internet & Filesharing · · Score: 2, Interesting

In addition to the other reply, no musician makes their money from CD sales. They make it by touring. Even small acts that produce and sell their own cd rarely recoup their costs on selling those CDs at shows. CD sales for an artist are 99% about getting their name/work out there so they can do more live shows. And when you get the RIAA involved it just gets worse, you in fact owe them the cost of producing your CD, so in addition to them keeping most of the royalties, you have to pay them what little you make to cover the costs of prodution/distribution/promotion. Again, you make all your money doing live shows. So I can't see why any artist has a problem with an easier way for their music to reach a broader audience.

I think the problem is all the anti-social geeks pirating the music never leave their house to go to a concert :)

  17. I'm a web designer and I make websites! (duh) on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

I've just started my career as a professional web designer out of college (grad in 2003), and my day job is working at a web design firm in a fairly bottom-level design position. In my spare time, I do complete websites for friends, family, anyone who will pay me even a little. It's helping build my portfolio and making me better at my real job. I've already talked to my boss about conflicts, and he said as long as I don't work on my side projects at work, there's no problem. My side projects pay around $500-$1000 typically, where as sites we do at the office are typically much higher than that, so I'm not really stealing work. It does drive me a little nuts once in a while constantly thinking about the web, but for the most part I'm enjoying it.

  20. Re:old LPs, 8-tracks, cassettes on Shawn Fanning Is Back Into Digital Music · · Score: 1

Well, according to how the RIAA is prosecuting file-sharers (as I understand it), when you buy a CD you are just licensing the use of that music under certain terms, which is the majority of the cost, and a little to cover manufacturing. So since the only way they have currently to check if you have a license is to have the physical media, it doesn't really matter where you got it or what condidtion it's in.

In reality though, they want you to buy the music in each new format that comes out, which means that they are just selling the physical medium, and not licensing the music. If these two seem to contradict each other, thats what expensive lawyers are for, to make them seem to be the same thing.
