It appears I was mistaken about moving an OEM copy. But this does raise an interesting side issue: So what if I have a machine with an OEM copy installed, and the sticker on the case. I then replace every component of said machine, except the case to which the sticker is attached. Is this the same machine as far as the EULA is concerned?

If not, what is the critical component? Surely I could replace any single component and not have to rebuy Windows.

Blazing Angels is not a flight sim. It's an action game, and if you have even minimal expectaionts of how a plane should fly, this game will annoy you. When rolling the plane, it feels as if it's rolling on the inside edge of a cylinder, like that old vector arcade game, instead of rolling on it's axis. This aspect wrecked both Blazing Angels and Heros of the Pacific for me. Not that they aren't good games, but the fact that the planes flew wrong made the game's controlls counterintuitive for me.

It's not nessisarily a huge thing, but it is something to be aware of. Your best bet would be to try a demo first.

Actualy, according to the EULA, if you uninstall windows from the old machine and/or the old machine is no longer functional, it's perfectly valid and legal to install the copy of window from the old machine onto the new one.

No one would say all machines should come without a pre-installed OS, but it should be an option. Then again it may not be worth it, as most people who would be in a position to transfer Windows in the manner described above would be perfectly capable of building their own machine anyway.

You can work up to it. Getting in the smaller, local tournaments is not to difficult, and it's no where near a full time job to be competative at that level. In fact, the gaming that most gamers already do is sufficent to train to beginner levels of competition, if you stay focused.

I actualy live with a pro-gamer, he's won a few thousand dollars from CPL events, and a Truck from a Halo 2 tourney. He does spend a fair ammount of time gaming, but he's also getting a Comp Sci degree, and has no trouble keeping his grades up.

As for sociaty's view of gaming, I suppose it's up to each gamer to decide how to deal with what sociaty thinks of the hobby. It's the same way across the board. Do NASCAR fans, or drivers for that matter, care that Indy fans think they're a bunch of hicks? Do baseball fans care that football fans think their sport is boring? For my part, I really don't care that someone who knows nothing about gaming thinks I'm waisting my time.

The "pro" prefix in the term "pro-gamers" means profesional. That means those tournaments are their job, much like any other profesional athelete. And don't go off about how gaming isn't athletic at all, that's not the point here.

I agree that this isn't a deathblow for competative gaming. However, if it is no longer possible to actualy make a living as a tournament gamer, that is going to drop the level of competition. Without the big tournaments, it's like doing the same job for much less pay, and it will become not worth it to many of the pros.

While this isn't earth shattering news eather way, the response of "Get a fucking job!" isn't exactly relevant.

Most of what you describe as the advantages of MMO style games is socalizing. That's all well and good, and it is a valuable use of time, but it doesn't have to tie in with your gaming time.

Socializing of any kind comes with the risk of "jackassery", and I would have to say it's more prevalant in MMO's than in other settings, but as you say, it's a small price to pay for the positive aspects you can gain. However, even neutral socalization can get in the way of enjoying a game, and some people would prefer to keep the two seperate for that reason. A little jackassery in the wrong place can totaly spoil a gaming session, perticularly if you like game-world immersion. And immersion in an MMO is nigh on impossible.

You mentioned that single player RPG's are just games. Well, despite the fact that there are real people on the other end of some of the characters, MMO's are also just games, at best. At worst they're glorified chat clients. You seem to be trying to use the fact that there are other people interacting with you to justify 60 hours a month in front of your computer. That's unnessisary, one should spend 60 hours however one wants, solo, socialy, whatever. Neaither way is better than the other. Personaly, when I want to game, I'll game, when I want to socalize, I'll go down to the coffee shop.

I would counter that you are already catogorising on a much more productive level than mentioned in the article. Madden 06 is a good sports game, it will appeal to sports gamers of any sex, creed, ect. CoD2 is a good WW2 Shooter, it will appeal to people of any type who enjoy that genra.

So I suppose more specificaly, it's irrelivant to try to focus based on biological/sociological differences. It's much more fruitful to focus based on a genra. So maybe "gamer" does need a qualifier, but it shouldn't be "Female", "Minority", or anything of that sort, but rather "FPS", "MMORPG", "Sports" and the like.

  17. The term "Gamer" doesn't need a discriptor on An Editorial Melee About Female Gamers · · Score: 4, Insightful
Female Gamers, Young Gamers, Old Gamers, Minority Gamers. There is a trend here, they're all gamers. And if there's one universal truth about gamers, it's that they like to play good games.

All this talk about how to cater to one group or the other is a waste of breath IMO. Targeting any one of those groups will probably net you around 30% of that group, but it will disinterest or piss off the other 70% of that group, along with all the other groups. Where as if you just quit worrying about it, and make a good game that's enjoyable, and fun to play, you'll end up getting a larger portion of all the groups playing your game.

My point is that most gamers, regardless of sex, race, creed, or any other factor, like playing good games. A company attempting to target a game at any specific group is just covering the fact that they're not really sure how to make a good game, so they're going to try to hoodwink some group into buying their game because "It's made for them, by them"
