Agreed. Saying all sequels are bad because some companies are lazy and make shitty sequels is like saying all food is bad because you ate at Mcdonalds.
The problem with sequels by certain companies like let's say, oh I don't know, Electronic Arts, is that they take the exact same engine, change the levels around (sometimes), do nothing to the actual gameplay and call it a day.
I'm not talking about the obvious stuff like Madden, either. There aren't any sequels made by EA in the last ten years that are significantly improved from the original. Not even the SSX series... the mountain's are different, and they stream without noticeable loading, but the gameplay is the same "take a jump, mash a bunch of shoulder buttons, and boost to the finish" it has always been... the mountain changing doesn't really change the action.
Def Jam Fight for NY was a little further removed from Vendetta, so I'll give them that one. But really... any other sequels made by EA that actually had a different feel to them than the original? Discuss.
So how is wi-fi ruining college? If you goof off all the time during class, you'll fail. And if you don't fail, that means the college is shitty in the first place. If you just go to lecture to surf the internet, why do you even go anyway? Ruining indeed.
One thing to note is quite a few people left when Rare was sold to Microsoft. The question is, did the good ones leave? The answer is... well sorta, maybe, partly, but Kameo packs quite a punch according to Gamespot.
Of course it should pack a punch considering it's less than 10 hours long and was originally going to be made for (this is true) the Nintendo 64. I mean, they spent over 6 months of development for each hour of gameplay (assuming you do one quick playthrough and throw it away).
Meanwhile, the reviews for Ghoulies were pretty low, but reviews for Conker were pretty high. I can tell you Star Fox Adventures wasn't their best. And PDZero is coming out soon too. Five console games in five years, that's not as many as there used to be.
So has Rare lost it, or do they still have it? Well. Sorta. Maybe. Partly. I'm excited to see what they do this generation.
Homer Simpson stopped going to church but was almost killed by a fire and saved by Flanders (Christian). (Krusty (Jewish), and Apu (Miscellaneous*) also helped out). Because of the help of his religious friend, Homer agreed to go back to church, but he ususally sleeps when he's there.
For the last year and a half, they've but putting warning screens at the very beginning of their games to consult the precautions manual, too. They just keep making their case more airtight.
Wonder if the Revo will just put that warning in its hardware (that'd be a good screen to show while the game is loading)?
The original argument was "why fill the 360 launch lineup with sports clones?" the counter-argument was "they sell well", your counter-counter-argument is "just because they sell well doesn't mean they're good". My conuter-counter-counter-argument is "I think they suck too, but the games sell well, which means they'll also help sell 360s, and that is what the argument was about."
But now for the real reason I posted:
"Just because a game sells good doesn't mean it's a good game."
Meanwhile, Guitar Hero gets a 9+ from every damn site, has amazing mainstream music and a controller based on a real guitar (travel-size), and just in general has "I want to play this game" written all over it when someone sees it in action, and half the stores don't even carry it.
I hope Microsoft chokes on their bullshit. I hope enough people are smart enough to say "this is obviously artificial shortage, and I don't care about your console any more because of it".
But what I hope more than anything else (about this issue of course), is that local news stations don't report the shortage. Oh God, I can hear it now...
*female voice* "...but if you want to get your kid the hottest video game console this Christmas, you might have trouble finding one..." ARGGHHGHGHGH!
Tamper-'resistant'. The same way those little orange plastic tents are water 'resistant'. Come to think of it, calling it "Tamper-proof code" would be much funnier.
More people will download their games illegally to circumvent the DRM bullshit, and enjoy free games as a side benefit. "Hey, I'd love to support the industry by buying the game, but the game is more functional this way".
For more on driving people to illegally copy games, see the mod detection Sony put in games that made them not work on a modded PS1... unless you burned the game onto another CD. That's right, only illegal games would run on modded PS1s. "Well, I was gonna actually buy this one, but oh wait, since I modded my PS1 (or bought a PS1 that happened to be modded), looks like I can't actually buy any games anymore".
Oh, and if you think for one millisecond that hackers aren't going to find a way to upload DRM'd games to a torrent site...
Fuckin' brilliant, Sony.
No, I didn't RTFA, and I take it/. blew this whole thing out of proportion (not that Slashdot would ever blow something out of proportion).
"Citing Sony's financial woe's and Microsoft's deep pockets, they predict '...Microsoft's Xbox 360 should emerge as the early winner in the next round of the game console wars.'"
If losing hundreds and hundreds of dollars per console is considered "winning", I'd rather lose. Yes, they make money with game sales, but think about it, how much do developers pay in licensing fees? How many games does the average person buy over the life of a console? Multiply those two numbers, then subtract the loss MS generates with the sale of each console (including fixed costs like advertising), and I'm thinking they'd end with a negative number.
So, you might say Microsoft isn't going for money this generation, they're going for market share. But why? Are they trying to suffocate Sony and Nintendo out of the market so they can gain a monopoly and then jack up prices and lower quality like there's no tommorow? Doesn't sound like Microsoft to me;).
"Hey remember back when the PS2 came out? They tried to sell it earler than the competition, so they released a sub-par console quickly rather than wait, and didn't have nearly enough consoles to cover demand."
"Yeah, and they're the leaders of this generation..."
"Exactly, so you know what we have to do to beat Sony... release it even earlier, even buggier, and in even shorter supply!"
"Yeah, in fact, let's make the supply so damn low that it will sell out even if it fails sales targets! Then people will be impressed and buy the console once it gets back in supply."
"But how about the people who get one at launch? When they pay so much for a buggy system because of its short supply and there's barely any good games for it, won't they get pissed?"
"Yeah, but what are they gonna do? They already bought the console. And they'll completely forget about it once the good games come out (around the PS3/Revo launch)."
"To be honest, I wish Microsoft would have gulped down a little pride and pushed the release back six months."
And they would have if they cared about us. Thing is, they observed that PS2 sold better, and a big reason for that was its early launch. So they're like, if we put a console on the market, a lot of people/parents are gonna get even if there isn't anything marvellous for the console yet. What they want is cold, hard, market share. Period.
(Not to say they don't care about gamers, but I'd say they were more interested in getting the thing out this Christmas than spending a little more time developing an even better console).
Well, since I'm posting on a game related thread, let me get my 2 cents out about this generation:
Xbox360, boring so far, PS3, boring so far, Revolution, really enticing. If the Revo ends up getting really bad 3rd party support (heaven forbid a Nintendo console get bad 3rd party support!) and Nintendo doesn't deliver on their concept (which I really hope won't happen), I'm honestly just gonna sit out with my Cube and PS2 for a while and see what happens.
"You're not going to be hacking into the Revolution to make it run Linux; I'd suspect the controls would make for a slightly wacky computing experience."
Well firstly, like sibling post said, there's Linux on the Xbox. Now for my post:
Anything that uses a mouse without needing a keyboard would be as good, scratch that, better on a Revo controller. Point where you want to mouse cursor to go, use A and B as your mouse buttons (and d-pad down for the middle button I guess). It's possible that some company is going to make a keyboard attachment to the Revo controller (just for a game, not for Linux) and then all of the pieces will have fallen into place.
I mean, laying down on a couch, running Firefox on my TV, just pointing at links? Mmmm mmmm, I'll take some of that:D
(Then again I am lazy... yeah, so lazy that sitting up at a computer is just too much effort)
Yeah, but who would be defined as the officers against spam? The FBI? Some other body of the government? Anyone at all? In any case, they're not doing their job.
So good for Microsoft... you'd think other companies would be doing this. Hell, there probably are other companies doing this, just not getting any attention from/. since they're not Microsoft/Google/A well-known open-source company.
Agreed. Saying all sequels are bad because some companies are lazy and make shitty sequels is like saying all food is bad because you ate at Mcdonalds.

... all alike.
And Super Smash Bros Melee (came before Christmas... it's was a launch game).
PDZero should be good though, so it's not like the 360 is going to worthless launch or anything like that.

Yeah, really. If I was a hacker, my reaction to an article about "tamper-resistant code" would be:
"Hahahahaahahahahahaahaha hahahahaahaaha hahahahaha hahahahahahahahaha hahaha hahaa haaaa".
Tamper-'resistant'. The same way those little orange plastic tents are water 'resistant'. Come to think of it, calling it "Tamper-proof code" would be much funnier.
"Hack The Rubix!"
... and install Linux on it.
Actually, I saw the post as Revo biased myself. I'm the same way.

Okay, I went through TFA very quickly, but how does this differ from a simple RSS feed?
"Dude, you're working for a corporation, you're a total sell out!"
"Man, you're spending all your time and money working on your business instead of hanging out with us, you're a sellout."
"Dude, you're bumming off of welfare and mooching off of us. You're such a sellout."
"Dude, ever since you became rich and famous, you forgot who you are. You've really sold out."
"Man, commiting suicide because every other option would label you a sell out? That's the easy way out, you're a sell out."
"Citing Sony's financial woe's and Microsoft's deep pockets, they predict '...Microsoft's Xbox 360 should emerge as the early winner in the next round of the game console wars.'"
;).

There must be some insider joke here I'm missing?
Humans usually use decimal numbers, he'd be 10101 in binary.

Haven't seen this flash? You should... it's fun to watch.
So how about a 60Hz game with a 120Hz CRT monitor? Wouldn't that satisfy the human eye's limit?
Yeah, but who would be defined as the officers against spam? The FBI? Some other body of the government? Anyone at all? In any case, they're not doing their job.
