And what were the first 15 minutes of the first Half-Life like? What about the first 15 minutes of Half-Life 2? Look, the whole "no control over yourself at the beginning" is a trademark of the Half-Life games. If you had started out in the thick of it, plenty of people (myself included) would have complained that they broke the tradition.

  9. Re:Awesome on Classic Star Wars Trilogy Finally on DVD · · Score: 1

Back then Jabba wasn't a big crime boss. He was lower down on the rung, nicer, smaller, more gentle. As hutts gain more power and influence they grow larger and meaner; you can tell that, in Return of the Jedi, Han tries to bargain with Jabba just like he always did, but Jabba will have none of that. While Han's been gone in ANH and TESB, Jabba got big, bad, and mean.

So what I'm trying to say is that it was entirely intentional that Jabba was laid back in that scene. It was cut for budget purposes; if it had been in the original release and you saw it BEFORE you saw RotJ, instead of saying "that's stupid, Jabba's acting nice" you would have thought "wow, in a few years this Jabba guy turned into a jerk."

An external DVD player sounds good to me. Then when HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray DVDs or WhateverDVDs become the next big thing, you unplug your DVD module and plug in a new module instead of dealing with an entire new DVD player. In fact, you can keep the old module around, instead of having to plug another player into your TV. Keep in mind the Gamecube couldn't even touch DVDs; if you want it like that, then just don't but the seperate plug-in.

I think the puzzles that you say were there to "show off the physics" were actually taking advantage of the physics. It's like saying the original Star Wars' space battles were showing off the special effects. Actually, no; Star Wars was what it was because of those awesome space battles as much as Half-Life 2's puzzles were interesting and inventive because they used physics. Usually game puzzles are all about flipping switches and making it through doors before they close; HL2 was one of the first games where, if I needed to get over a wall, I could use the properties of levers to get over by moving around some concrete blocks instead of finding a red key that plugs into a console that has a number puzzle to solve so I can make the wall disappear.

  25. Unfounded Speculation on Bungie Hiring PC Developers · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is silly. My bet is that they're hiring PC developers to not only port Halo 2 but also because PC developers are better suited for next gen consoles. Current gen console developers have dealt their whole lives with limits waaaaay under next gen, while PC games are already there. Just like PC companies like Valve hired movie people when they first started working on their high end next gen content (HL2), a developer like Bungie would have an interest in people who are experienced with advanced technology just around the corner.
