  1. Just give up already... on Carefully Timed Jerks Could Power Space Elevator · · Score: -1, Redundant

Why is everyone so obsessed with this terrible idea? Even if we got it to work, there's no way we'd be able to afford the maintenance and energy costs. It just isn't viable.

  2. MGS4, no contest... on The Best Games of 2008 · · Score: 1

Anyone who's played through the whole series, start to finish, cannot deny that MGS4 deserves to be crowned this year's best game (I won't go in to why, as others have already done so in some detail). It won't win though, as most gamers will have never even played it because few even own a PS3, and that's tragic.

  3. Touch is a fad... on The Age of Touch Computing · · Score: 1

Is there even any evidence to suggest that touch is superior to standard input methods like the mouse? Would it raise productivity? I doubt it. In fact, I'd say it would do the opposite. Just because a solution is flashy and hi-tech, that doesn't make it superior. I'll stick with my keyboard and mouse.

  5. In HD? on First Public QuakeLive Footage In HD · · Score: 0, Troll

Was this worth mentioning? I mean, most computers already do support HD resolutions, and have for a while now, so HD games on the PC platform are the standard nowadays. I can't help but think this was slapped on as marketing babble to cash in on the current HD craze.

Very true. His essays and political commentary are some of the best I've ever read, and still hold great relevance today. I recommend them to anyone who isn't already familiar. That said, I'm looking forward to reading these diary entries.

  8. What a weak, cowardly little man... on Spam King and Family Dead In Murder-Suicide · · Score: 4, Insightful

"Davidson, 35, was sentenced in April to 21 months in prison and ordered to pay $714,139 in restitution to the IRS after pleading guilty to falsifying header information to send spam e-mail, tax evasion and criminal forfeiture."

So, all it took for this guy to snap was 21 months and a shitload of debt? He must've known the consequences if he was ever caught. If you ask me, he killed in the wrong order.

  9. Must be a slow news day... on Video Game Movies "Not Creative Expression" · · Score: 1

So, some random video site removes gaming clips because they're scared of getting sued, then gives a lame excuse as to why they did it, and this is front page material on Slashdot? Bullshit.

  10. The question is, how long can they keep it up? on Wii Is the New US Console Leader · · Score: 0, Troll

After the poor show at E3, I'm starting to doubt whether Nintendo can hold on to its lead for much longer. They like to think that it's the casual games selling Wiis, but the AAA titles are what the hardcore gamers want - and it's the hardcore gamers who'll decide the outcome of the console wars. The initial batch of AAA titles was pretty strong (Zelda, Mario, and SSBB, for instance), but the thing is, it takes Nintendo quite some time to churn these out - usually a few years. There's always the chance that by then, they could simply have run out of steam. The novelty hasn't worn off yet, it appears, but the Wii isn't infallible, like Reggie seems to think - if Nintendo aren't careful, their beloved Wii may indeed turn out to be just another fad. I doubt many hardcore gamers would be satisfied with a Wii alone - for games with true substance as opposed to novelty, most will go for either the PS3 or 360 in addtion to a Wii.

  12. It sounds pretty quick... on Windows 7 in the Next Year? · · Score: 2, Insightful

But I doubt it'll be a whole new OS. I reckon they'll just change Vista enough so that it doesn't suck anymore. That, combined with a slightly different GUI, and they'll hope they have a successful OS on their hands.

  13. So, where does this leave future Xbox 360 games? on Why Microsoft Won't Have Blu-ray on the Xbox · · Score: 2, Insightful

Microsoft may well take charge of online HD content distribution, but what about games on the 360? Surely those can't be downloaded, as you'd need tons of space, right? If they choose not to adopt Blu-Ray, then how will they keep up with the PS3 in terms of next gen games? By limiting themselves to dual layer DVDs, don't they risk being overtaken by superior offerings on the PS3? We've heard Kojima say that MGS4 can barely fit on a Blu-Ray disk, so that must mean the 360 is screwed, right? In a few years when developers start to fully utilise the vast amounts of space available on Blu-Ray disks, I can forsee the 360 being left behind and fading into obsolescence - unless Microsoft decides to act. Adopting Blu-Ray may seem counterproductive for Microsoft's business interests, but if they want the 360 to survive, I can't really see any other options for them. They're gonna have to support Blu-Ray eventually.

  19. I'm not so sure... on Where the Wii Fits In · · Score: 5, Insightful

Don't count out the classics just yet. AAA titles like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are pretty much the main attraction for Nintendo fans, and without them, Nintendo wouldn't be able to support itself with novelty alone. AAA titles have always been Nintendo's pillar of strength, and the only reason they didn't call it quits when the Gamecube lost out last time round.
