One thing that continues to strike me with people who consider themselves left is that there is a lot who are no better than some of those, "conservative Christians who have been fighting the culture war for control of expression and action in the US for decades now."
The harsh truth is that there's a constant battle, and the quote in the previous point actually talks about in it's monologe. The only thing you've done here is pulled out a High school student rant that talks about how other have lack of fact, yet never really has any kind of form or point besides saying that the ruling body isn't anything the general populus is looking for.
True, look at Thompson and h is supporter. What about them? They're appearently Conservative and Christian. What does that mean? What does that prove? They're just like you and me pal. They've got a few ideas, some of which may seem extreme but in the end they're looking for good.
"What about freedom of speech?" I want you to give me an example where everyone is so completely eger to comprimise and agree what is 'morally' right. Where people's tendancies to cause harm or manipulate are processed in a way to benefit everyone (including a wrong doer). You won't find it outside a Starhawk book or other utopian novel.
You do however live in a place were process can be fought. You think you have no power to make a difference then you're right, you don't. They've finally done a good job and forced you onto Slashdot to talk about the woes. However, that's not entirely true.
You keep yourself informed about what's being done about the laws etc that you care about and you can make some difference. May not change the world but that's because the world has billions of others who have ideas outside of you. Bitching about the 'uninfored bigoted but working mob rule' doesn't help--shows how apart of it you actually are.
On a more on topic note. Sure it is moving 'forward' but it is one state and its a place where something like this may need to be applied for people to wake up somewhat. However, I'm not sure nor care because different country, and it's affects are too small to worry about on my end.
I've seen lawyers doing all the work, doctors, farmers, factory workers etc etc etc...But in the end everyone else seems to think everyone else but their circle isn't doing any work.
Nobody has talked about what work is and how we measure it. Is it measured in dollars signs, and if so, doesn't that show that a Lawyer does hard work? Wait! No it doesn't. There are situations where they might have at one time but can now depend on other hard workers to get them paid more.
Or is hard work staying up 48 hours and then doing a 20km hike humping a sack? Wait! No, that can't be it either.
Just what are we talking about here? Is there lazy people. Dam right there is. I take a look at a Japanese college student and I wish them the best--they work their asses of for little wage with tons of compititon.
To me, work is what I need to feed myself and have the basics. Outside of that it doesn't matter what I do for work. I am someone naive though. I have worked in factory jobs building boats for 8 hours sucking in fibreglass dust, and then worked 12 hours on a hot roof laying shingle on a 12/12 pitch. I've worked as a web designer and now I do call center work. I made the most sitting on my ass 8 hours relaying calls. I hardly call it work though.
Depends on your goals though. I see some people who put everything into their job because they want stuff but in the end they only talk and live for what--stuff. (Stuff includes family desires, not needs though)...
Then again, What do I know. Maybe I've never worked.
Well aren't you just the "Well aren't you" type of character who continuiously tries to justify their existance by thinking they're actually doing something useful by repling to users with the communities' well-used labels like "Slashdot karma whore".
Come on. The topic is about your hack. He told you his hack and then added his bit. What the funk is wrong with that?
Think about some of the lighters that use butane and other chemicals we tend to carry in our pockets or stuff into a car on a sunny day. With nothing more than a label warning on a box you threw out the moment you opened it.
If you read up on the method on how the cells work and other technology it may or may not put more confidence in you. Besides, systems fail and dangerous stuff is often carelessly misplaced or misused (I once discovered a Sidewinder missle on a beach). They're going to make it as sound as possible for now and if it isn't safe or screws up then people get hurt or die, such is the process of invention and exploration.
Microsoft did have it's foot in gaming. Microsoft's Gaming "Zone" was a pretty busy spot in late 90s with titles both created and produced by Mirosoft companies.
I think the success of Halo: Combat Evolved helped accelerate and make players of today fimilar with Mirosoft name because of the shooter market. I can't remember how many junkies in school would ramble about Halo and then faintly mention that you needed an XBox.
PS2 is slated for problems to. You mention Xbox overheating and dying, well although my PS2 lasted for 3 or 4 years before the drive went. There where a lot that went after 3 months or 6 months.
I guess in the end it's just about brand preference.
I agree with the only poster that you need to give more details besides KDE being the exception with Kubuntu.
The fact is Kubuntu is/specifically/ for users who perfer KDE over Gnome, which is standard for a desktop install of Ubuntu-BB, otherwise why download and use the Kubuntu package?
I thought since discovering Ubuntu that it is really quite User-friendly. 1 CD gets you up and running to experence GNU/Linux. The only problem is Installing and running into errors doesn't tell a new user where to look for logs and what exactly is wrong. It isn't a graphical installer (yet), but it is still not too hard to figure out.
I agree. I've played MUDs for 10 years. Not only are they free tons of changes and like all games the basics are the same but with MU* they use imagination.
"Adaptation by evolution is slow, painful, and deadly for generations. Adaptation by technology is what made frail hairless apes the dominant species on the planet."
Okay, so you agreed with what I said then.
Prist: "Live on earth and believe in jesus and when you die come into heaven.."
Me: "....Ah, then what is Death? Why do we say die?"
Prist: "Quiet! You insult my intelligence?"
Okay. I'm going overboard. And I don't want to go too far off topic. The point isn't to 'extend' life past, but because we have a world full of things our bodies are not used to the cells sometimes get influenced and cancer starts to spread, thus speeding up the time the body 'lives'. So, if we can ease that it just means that smokers can smoke until they're full a tar and the lungs fail (Unless of course we come up with an anti-tar spray!). I can lay in the sun and broil if I want to, knowing that the 3rd degree burns are cosmedic.
To to mention no more eating Flordia oranges.

Humans, like a very small few other species, have the capacity to adapt our environment to suit us, rather than the other way around. No need to go through all that painful natural selection when we can build central heating, agriculture, and wheelchair ramps.
Humans have a capactity to adapt to our enviroments? I think you're confusing our inventiveness to coping with Enviroment change.
In the end, if an Ice age was created by a volcanic eruption or something along those lines billions are hard pressed without a winter Jacket.
You have to remember to, the affects of UV right down to radio waves will have an affect on our bodies and slowly over time you might find someone immue or even able to pick up on these.
I guess my point is the forces of this universe are constantly changing and we tend to think we are the pinnicle--how absolutely ignorant of us. Though, it's part of the 'nature' of things.
Changes in the last 30 years will take our minds and bodies a long while adjust to.
The earth does its own thing. Changes it face etc etc...Before you know it you've got a giant lead box poking out of a mountain. Or better yet, how to you both protect the surrounding area without drawing attention to it, leave it in the ground to leak everywhere way down the road.
Depending on where you live you can be fined large amounts for dialing 911 unless it is an emergency.
Anyone who dials 911 with or without identifying themselves from a landline will have to be visited by the Police. This is the law in where I live in Canada and in most cases, many states. I have worked as a relay operator and if someone dials 711 and is looking for 911, well, we have to give 911 the number we received and they investigate.
I saw a comment on dialing 911 to speak with an officer. That is terribly wrong. Then again, I've heard officers say some very uninformative things. 911 works with your area code and community code in other cases. If you live in the boonies, you'll most likely get a central dedicated center that can contact local police and fire from a hundred miles away. If you are in a state like California, in a major city, you'll often get the local PSAP/Police switch board during business hours and then then who knows who during the wee hours and holidays (Lines are bounced around, I'm not technical on how the works exactly,I've just experienced it). If you want to speak with an officer non-emergency you dial the local line. If they're closed, it's non-emergency you're supposed to look the number up for another area.
In a case like this since everyone was plending ignorance all it was is a waste of time for the store, the Police and those geeks who signed up for the prank.
I think it was worth a chuckle. Seemed to me it was mostly bragging about the trouble and confusion than the humour. I also liked the comment on how it made the employees react. Everyone did think the worst, then again, it's a society full of fear.
Since the cartoon show "Duckman" (Featuring the voice of Jason Alexander) appeared in the mid-90's to shake the adult cartoon world up. His enligthen newphew, Ajax, was made popular among those late-night cartoon watching adults. Many of whom spent hours on the internet...
"...massive pyramid which had been masquerading as a hill"
Moments later, UN officals ordered a blockade and sent 200 troop from Antartica to regulate and keep the peace with the surrounding hills.
One was quoted, (translated),"We suspected something was wrong with the last centry they moved 2inches into a offivive positions."
No other hills would comment at the time.
For all you Slash-Canadian reader who have had a chance to experience Zip.ca I have to admit, services like this beat the snot out of Blockbuster.
Few reasons for this:
-Block Busters tend to lack in selection outside, recent American films. There are the odd large BB's out there that have world selections etc but they're often tiny.
Zip on the other hand has a huge selection of 'classics' and film circuit movies. Not to mention all the new releases.
-Zip is FAST. If you have a watch list of movies, you get the or two (depending on your membership) within a few days if you're like me and live in a major city. As for small towns. I had a great experience dealing with them in Halifax too.
-Sure, BB you can walk down the street and pick up Aquamarine before most places get it but for the price you pay on new rentels (regardless of deals) isn't much compared to membership with zip.
It really depends on the user though. If you like all sorts of movies and don't watch them every single night you can hold on to the movie with zip and send it to be done and have the next on the list within a very short time.
If you want the latest releases 24/7 BB is your bet. I'm a bit byass because I worked of BB and also dislike their ads, selection, promotions and end the end the service..
Can't say much about the service mention in this topic but internet DVD rentals give you a great choice.

Although I was going to write something harsh. Especially with the idea of,"If you build it, they will come"
I'll just go with this: It has to do with SELFISHNESS. Trying to block out a loud, and abused world. Temporary distractions for yourself instead of using the and time recording your library for something better. I've got nothing wrong with music. It's when you see $1000 of equipment hanging off of 20 people (iPod, Cellphone, PSP for example). There's something wrong there. $20,000.00. What should people be focused on while riding the bus wasn't the point.
I guess I ask a dumb question. Maybe it's when I see 20+ people on Public transit with iPods in their hand do I wonder about where people have their focus.
As for the article and pridiction, well duhh. The future will bring more memory to our pockets. I predict less than 150 replies for this topic.

Um, I'm not sure if you understood my comment correctly.
I have to be more careful about my use of the word 'terrorism'. My comment was a dry-joke on facts that could be thrown around to support the use of nucular weapons.
If I'm going to die I'm going to die. Regardless, I'm not going to hide behind a mis-place fairytale that my safety is secure with the largest fighting force kill people around the world and profiting.
So don't worry my dear friend. I'm not scared of 'terror' or people in the Middle East(Or other nations). I'm worried about them because I wish they weren't targeted by such a group as the USG.
I am however worried about what YOU can do besides ranting to ME on slashdot to MAKE a difference. You're prenching to the parish.;)
Okay, perhaps I stand corrected in a way but Microsoft didn't just roll ontop of this. Computer manufactures exist to what, sell computers. What were user fimilar with--The Microsoft name. I'm sorry early PCs didn't have the designed for Microsoft Windows that I remember until mid 90's. It's like going to Sear to find a Kenmore and Maytag washing machine on the same floor. The store owns own company, but the compititon is there and if a consumer knows and trust one they goto it.
I have to admit I'm hardly an expert either. You have a lot of people buying PC's in the 90's. Regardless of what is on the box, that is easy to use and available and stable for every piece of hardware they can puzzel together without making it hard on the user to figure out--it was Windows. At that point, could anyone else keep up? So Microsoft fronts money towards advertising with those wonky stickers on every Personal PC, and Network PC with "Designed for Windows NT/98, Novell 4, Intel inside"
I can't say I want to defend Microsoft but they were just doing what any other company would do for profit. That is our world. As for plenty and laws, well bust them up and make an example but they helped create the beast. Better put him down quick because the next guy is waiting to do the same thing.
Call his agent. I'll send him an email once the sun recharges my Powerbook's battery.

Of course, I do understand what you're saying but comedy just doesn't sell like violence.
