Re:Latex...?
I have just finished my thesis in Latex and now when OO.org 2.0 is out (or will be soon), I would like to switch to it. However, there are no converters from latex to OO.org. To be honest, there are no converters from latex to anything that are decent (supporting all the addons one can have), but I think it would be good idea to have one.
Something like Tex4ht http://n4u.ath.cx/htlatex/ would be good. -
My coverage
Here is my coverage which I submitted two days ago. It got rejected because my method me documentation wasn't sufficiently nerdy.

Re:If you can assure me...
I don't think there would be a significant security difference - the backend code is shared, and most holes (besides UI spoofing type holes) are in the backend (I don't think UI differences could create a buffer overflow hole, for example). However, when it comes to stability and reliability, that's when the coding pracitces come into play.
The new options window for Firefox introduced many new bugs - for example, the code that was checked in doesn't even WORK! (The window is 100% transparent and unusable). There are plenty of problems with it.
Another example is the yellow information bar (which I spoof in the link above) - when I was porting it to Mozilla, with minutes of testing I found serious problems it caused. After fixing those issues, I found and fixed more subtle ones. The Firefox code had been checked in, apparently with almost no testing, let alone code review. Yes, users found the bugs and filed them, but I don't trust users to find many of the less overt bugs. -
Re:Modded insightful? Gun control stupid? Many people have the mistaken impression that guns are too lightly regulated in the USA.
Not only do Americans tolerate a wide variety of restrictive laws, which vary state by state, they even have to pay for their own guns and ammunition!
Compare this to the Swiss experience.
Every Swiss man, on reaching age 20, is issued with a rifle to keep at home. That rifle is the SIG Strumgeweher (assault rifle) model 1990 (Stgw 90), a selective fire, 5.6 mm rifle with folding skeleton stock, bayonet lug, bipod, and grenade launcher. pic , pic, Google
The Stgw 90 is a real assault rifle in that it is fully automatic.
Gun control dogma claims that this would result in a bloodbath. As usual, the dogma is wrong.
Note also that Mainstream Media avoids reporting on the Swiss gun policy. After all, they don't want to undo all the work they have done for anti-gun forces over the years!

Re:IMHO
A one distro solution doesn't mean anything when it is all driven by Cedega/Wine/WineX
The most something like that could accomplish would be tweaks to fix things that the distro may have broken.
The closest you will get right now is the Unofficial Transgaming Wiki page which mentions which version work better with what games and what tweaks maybe needed to get it to work. -

Re:Cool!
I did the same thing with FarCry - hold off and bought it when I thought that the remaining bugs in Cedega (and FarCry!) have been fixed.
Now, even _after_ downloading, patching and installing a brand-new Nvidia driver _and_ a brand-new Cedega v4.2 - it still does not work reliable :(
* There is no fullscreen mode (meaning I have to play essentially in 1600x1200 or loose my desktop settings)
* water reflections don't work - bummer :(
* when I enter level 2 (the carrier), the save game functionality stops working - it says "game saved" but the save game does not appear on the disk - meaning I have to restart the level when I die :-(
Oh well, that will teach me next time to wait a few more iterations of bugfixes/patches :/
I am just soo glad that I didn't pay the full retail price for FarCry - I would have literally cried for far too long..

Re:First impressions
I think Appleseed 2004 would fit your bill. It's a combination of cel-shaded characters with beautifully rendered scenery. They actually tried to lip-sync with the words, so it'll much harder dubbing it to English.
Just a little bit of info on the movie: I think it's a remake of the orignal Appleseed OVA made in 1988, which was based off the manga. It was created by Masamune Shirow, so all you Ghost in the Shell fans better check it out.
AniDB entry here.
There are trailers here.
This is one movie I'd buy if it was ever released here (with subs). -

Re:What about Direct X 9.0?
Cedega currently supports DirectX 9.0b - the support was added about two versions (e.g. 4 months or so) back.
The last version (released several weeks ago) speed up quite a few 3D operations etc. You can read more about it here.

Re:What I wish Gentoo had
Usually what you do is blindly try "man ircd" at the terminal prompt, for example, or if that doesn't work, go to packages.gentoo.org , type in the package name, follow the homepage link, and find instructions there.
Say, if you emerged ngircd, the man method don't work, so you do the search, follow the homepage link, where you find installation instructions. -

Re:Install a larger fan for modding?... and old Citroens - that's a GSA with an aircooled 1300cc flat four, which takes it to around 115mph (will cruise all day at just under the ton). Going from 0-60 in about 11 seconds is helped by the upper rev limit of around 8,500rpm...
The 2CVs and Dyanes had an aircooled 600cc twin (with fairly manky exhaust emissions if not properly looked after). The 2CV Sahara was four wheel drive - it had a second engine mounted at the back!
And of course, if you want to really enjoy the aircooled fun, get a Tatra 603 (but you're going to have to Google that yourself). -
Re:I'd like more info, actually
If you go and implement this for all the entrances and you really DO want to be cautions about hackers gaining admittance, be careful what kind of RFID you choose. RFID Cloner
If would be easy enough to have the RFID readers ONLY within the building and give the engineers/manag^H^H^H^H^H^H/security/cleaning staff access to a sensitive lab, maybe. That way even if someone does manage to clone the tag while the engineer is in the street, they can't get in the building using just the cloned tag. If someone within the company did this, you probably have other problems anyways. -
Unofficial Transgaming Games Database
Hi,
obligatory link:
Unofficial Games Database
Go there and check out which games really do work under Cedega! And while you are there, they could use your help to complete the database and info!
Hopefully in the near future, the old and non-functional database from transgaming.com can be replaced by something better... -
Re:Helpful bugThat's nothing. I can't even get at most of the icons on my desktop because they've run off the edge. (Text obscured to protect the guilty.)
My original plan was to download stuff to the desktop and then sort it and store it (because my old download directory, C:\down, grew to several gigabytes in size and was impossible to find anything in).
It didn't turn out as I had planned.

Dear Apple,
I am a big homosexual. I bought an Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. Thanks in advance.
with much gayness,
Father Randy "Pudge" O'Day, S.J.
Dear Father O'Day:
Thanks for your letter. Being Catholic myself, I know exactly what you're talking about! It has always been our plan here at Apple Computer Inc to revolutionize personal computing with our high-quality and highly gay products.
I'm happy to answer your letter by letting you know that YES we will be releasing an entire hLife ("homo-life") software line. You'll be able to recognize it in stores by the small stylized logo depicting a large cock entering a tight anus with an Apple logo on it. ("Suddenly it all comes together" indeed!).
Anyway, I hope you and other members of our community will join us on our mission, and purchase the exciting new hLife boxed set. Only the boxed set comes with translucent cock rings!
Sincerely,
Harry Rodman

Re:PiracyIf you're curious just how rampant this thing is, take a look at this picture. Yes, all of those are pirated CD's. And they are being sold in Metro stations for $3 or so.
Bad URL try this.
You can get them in China cheaper, in Hong Kong a little more expensive. Most software is currently about $3.50/CDR, but a year ago it was about $1, that's what the latest crackdown did, really put a dent in the bootleg trade.

Re:Too heavy..
Your AIM and ICQ buddy lists are positively bloated.
I think it's funny, looking at the ICQ list with ugly, garish colors and the big ad that you blocked. AIM is similarly bad, but it's not an ad, just the big "AOL Instant Messenger" graphic. Too much clutter for my tastes.
I have my gaim chat window to be similarly pared down, but it's not really worth a screenshot. All it is is a menubar, chat window showing what we've said, text entry field for typing my messages, and then a list of tabs for all the people I'm chatting with. no big buttons or anything.

Actually, he's right. The Incas did invent the concept of zero, it's just that the idea didn't spread because their culture died out before it could make a contribution to ours.
I wrote a dippy paper about the history and importance of zero. You can read about it here. -
Same technology as proximity cards...
RFID is ther same technology as proximity cards used to access many buildings.
And here - also cached at - is a proximity/rfid copier and spoofer. It can read cards passively (while another reader interrogates them) or actively, and can later pretend it's the card when interrogated.
Of course, this can be defeated by a challenge/response system, which is available, but lower costs will probably dictate the cheaper ID only rfid.
I've known it can be done, and have had a desire to do it, but this guy already did. Now if this becomes common enough then the manufacturers will be forced to use more secure RFID mechanisms.

Re:Future Pirate Broadcasts: Terrorism?
This was pulled off (not on broadcast TV) by Orson Welles, in a radio broadcast of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds" in 1938.
I don't listen to any commercial radio, nor watch TV. Hence, I don't really know any regular schedule. So, if a radio program, such as Joe Frank's, were to do a science-fact-docu-drama, I could just adjust the dial to see if it's for real.
Also, Reagan once announced
that "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you Ijust signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes." -
Re:Opera...Regarding the position of the address bar, well, it is of course completely up to you. Mine is staying at the bottom.
:)And my setup is not cluttered -- the default 7.23 is, though, I agree. Screenshot of my layout, for comparison sake. (the blank bit between the page area and the button/tool bar is the status bar.)

Re:Berman, future, past, and stealing ideas.
NUKES! BIG FRIGGIN' NUKES! There's only one way to fight a space war before phasers and photons, and that's with Gigawatt lasers/masers and BIG ASS NUKES!
You have obviously not learned the Kzinti Lesson, studied Operation Hard Rock, nor considered the weapons implications of antimatter, which we know the proto-federation has at its disposal in at least modest quantities, or the weapons possibilities of a teleporter. (NB: "Given the assumptions in (I) and (II) you don't really get a society. You get a short war.") Nor, for that matter, realized that some SF implications of 9/11 were considered at least back in 1998, over three years before the plane hit the Pentagon.
SF wars have been considered for for a long time now, and there's many other promising possibilites besides nukes. (And if you think the military doesn't pay attention, think again. They have been giving at least half an ear to what the SF guys are babbling about for a long time now.)
That said, I'm also one of those hoping this temporal cold war thing will end with one last change wiping it out of history, even though they've done that trick before. -
