In short, they prove that program obfuscation is mathematically impossible.

That's been tried and failed. Maybe it's because human-readability is
important. Maybe it's because of the difficulties of revocation and all
that. Maybe it's because the costs of adopting a new namespace are quite
large and the benefits are quite small. In any case, I've seen people
follow that path and fall flat on their face. I wish you well, but be
aware of the difficulty.

Actually, BitTorrent was created by Bram Cohen (not Brian). You can find his website here.

Unfortunately, if you look at the Internet Archive of the website, and make your way though the various broken links to find the different vesions of the agenda, you'll see that this "parody" is not labeled as such until recently.... more recently than the archive shows, in fact. Perhaps changed after the ruling came down? Furthermore, it has been delinked from his current home page, although it used to reside under "Musings."

This leaves judging the intent problematic. While the other "musings" are not so serious as the "serious writings", they're not complete fluff either. This isn't going to be a laughing matter if it goes to court.

What becomes more important for the BitTorrent project is the extent to which Brad's demonstrated intentions may be taken as evidence for the intentions of other developers who worked with him on the project, a point which I was discussing in the followup to the case with someone.

Will it be as famous as Bill's has become? Here's a few Bram could choose from.

The Bollywood studios have an opportunity to embrace the technology so feared by their Western cousins. Their production costs tend to be much lower, their business model more fluid. If they get this right, they could ride the bandwidth wave into the next decade, paying less for distribution than the MPAA pay for toilet tissue. Let's hope they can provide a much-needed example

But the fact that 35% of all 'net traffic is being carried by one program is simple awesome, and a great credit to BitTorrent's creators.

You mean one protocol. There are many, many different BitTorrent clients. In fact, I don't know anyone who uses the original client (at least, not directly). Most people I know use Azureus. And it's much to the credit of the BitTorrent creator. One guy called Bram Cohen.

Why would they need to sniff the traffic? They simply connect to machine advertising torrents of copyright material and note the IP addresses of all the people who send them parts of the file (or at least enough to qualify as having tried to ilegally obtain a copy). This is why people opt for IP blacklists like Safepeer for Azureus or Protowall for clients that don't have a blocklist plugin. It blocks connections from organisations with a vested interest in snooping on your shares. In many cases it's a bit overbearing though.

So what happens when they download the DVD Bootable Debian Linux with a little help from the scalable download mechanism and reboot ?

There's a better solution for big files - it's called bittorrent. It's nothing new, and it regularly transfers gigabyte size files for a fraction of the senders traffic.

Interesting, though I notice Bram's avoided updating his donate, this is my only job page that pops up randomly when you use the bittorrent client.

Heard of Steam?

It's exactly what you describe. It's (theoritically) a system that allows you to easily download patches and updates automatically for certain games (right now only Half-Life based games). Also it allows you to buy certain games ONLINE for download. One of the methods for purchasing Half-Life 2 is a download through steam, whenever you want, using your unique ID.

It's more than currently written on the site and rumors say they plan to make it even larger and expand the number of games supported to games other than Valve's.

Worth noting that many people don't like it, because it's not yet stable and fast, but Valve have hired one Bram Cohen to write parts of the distribution code.

I'm not stuck on DVD as next generation or big floppy. I'm not even thinking DVD as next generation VHS. I'm discussing the passing trends of technology. VHS hit houses in the 70s and 80s, becoming fairly ubiquitous in the late 80s and early 90s. I've got a few VCRs, but I can't remember the last time I rented or purchased a tape, and I know I'm not alone. DVD has started replacing VHS which lasted, therefore, about 20 years on top.

Whatever you stick on the DVD doesn't matter. Whatever the purpose of your sticking things on the disk doesn't matter, either. Yes, there are stand-alone devices that make it unlike computers. I concede. You missed some of my point, but I got yours. You win.

My mention of broadband was not to imply an extension of PPV. On the contrary, I was simply suggesting that bandwidth can become a medium for delivery of movies or data delivered by other than physical media. The other discussions in this thread have kicked that horse to death, but here's my take:

Consider the possibility that out-of-band delivery or really high speed makes it so that time isn't the problem; now downloading many GB of data (including the MPEG encoded movies) can take hours longer than going to your video outlet and making a purchase. You instead order your purchase from Amazon. It's delivered to your home entertainment server, or made available in perpetuity from some remote server (in the example, bandwidth isn't a big deal, but maybe storage is). You watch the digital any time you want, same as having the disk in the drive. You want to take it with you, you move it to your portable player, just like music on an iPod, or you access your video server account from your buddy's player when you want to share.

Even wire as a medium might fade. Wireless is nearly everywhere, and if the bandwidth and access can become ubiquitous, too, maybe that'll open the system up so you don't need the comfort of holding the plastic disk in your hand.

Given that, I believe even today's technology surpasses PPV and DVD. Small changes to PVR software could allow technology to integrate and deliver content differently than today. You set up your PVR to record the movie to watch later, poof it's there; there until you don't want it any more. Better than DVD, it gets the resolution best suited for your video and storage device, lanugage preference, and viewing preference (letterbox, directors' cut, whatever). You've go the right setup (I've got nearly a TB of storage on 11 different servers in my house), you probably never have to get rid of it. Sure, licensing needs to be worked out. BitTorrent ripped DVDs aren't always legal (although there is legal content, too), but here I'm just pointing out different technology, not advocating theft.

That's what Bill was talking about. Not the shitty "watch on demand" crap from your cable company.

DVD as a medium? It'll pass. I bet it'll pass a lot faster than albums have (which have gone through their own transitions such as two sided, 78-, 45-, and 33-RPM, stereo, etc, so it's not like they turned out the best phonograph 100 years ago). It takes a lot of gear to make a DVD work, instead of just a needle and something to vibrate for a phonograph. That technology will change more rapidly than it has to bring us DVD. High-definition, surround-sound, extra features, all that jazz will push the limits of the media, and it'll shift. You want to record your own stuff on DVD? That's not where it will be either (and you have to concede, nearly no one ever recorded albums at home).

I think the medium of DVD will be around for a long time. I hope so--I have hundreds of the damned things (exaggerated, but not unrealistic). I also think the next best thing will be here before we send men to Mars.

Everything is explained in the documentation if you ever need to write your own client (or alternatively, you could look at the Python source code which is very interesting for all the lazy CS students on holiday like me ;)

That's a slippery-slope argument. I'm not saying it won't happen but your conclusions don't follow logically from your premises. It's not inevitable that the RIAA/MPAA will go after Bram Cohen, although I wouldn't take bets on it if the law is passed.

Better yet, where the torrent tools?

If FTP or HTTP protocols have the "capability" to telport the damn file to me on DVD doesn't matter. The fact is that the way browsers and ftp clients operate now is to pull the whole damn file from a single source, and although there is an option to request a chunk and to restart broken transfers there is no auto-discovered-multi-source-simultaneous-distribu ted-crypto-integrity-checked option. Note that several comments here are alluding to pattern of standards and protocols evolving and replacing each other based on changes in the world in which the protocols live, such as this - asymetrical internet connections and wide spread interest in participating in serving content have made single sourced services [conventional http and ftp servers] less attractive. The same way http servers/clients made gopher et al less attractive back in the day. Those two things taken together make things like:

White Water
konspire2b (which hasn't gotten enough attention IMO)
much more attractive for distribution of non-webpage content/files. Why? Tons of distributed upload capacity and interest and relatively huge download pipes - I can dl at 3 Mb/s but server X cannot by itself fill that pipe, but 47 DSL users can.

Please explain in more depth how you think http and ftp already cover the ground covered by bt and white water and/or what capabilities of http and ftp that we are ignorant of, then it might be more clear what you are having trouble with.

Let's start with the shell--zsh is by far the best one I've used. It has everything.

Moving on, Links (web browser) and Naim (AIM/ICQ/IRC client) rock. The only issue with the former is that Links doesn't support cookies, so I have Lynx in case I want to post on /. or something.

I don't have a console mail client on my machine--I have other methods of getting my email. For accessing my email account with my uni, I ssh into my uni's shell account and use pine from there or I use Links to access the Squirrelmail setup on my web server (over HTTPS, of course). To access my fastmail.fm account, I just use Links to access their web interface (they support both web and IMAP access for free).

For downloading stuff, I use giFTcurs, the btdownloadcurses.py BitTorrent client, and the venerable wget, depending on what I'm looking for and where I'm downloading from.

And, for the part that will generate the most flamage, my text editor of choice: Joe! Its interface is just as simple as nano, but with more features, such as find/replace and decent copy/paste, using text selection. On a related note, I use most as my pager--coloured man pages are good.

And, finally, who could forget NetHack?

Hmm...now I have an urge to find out how to make live CDs, so I can make a ``CLI survival kit'' live CD. Well, maybe not, as I'm too bloody lazy, but it's an idea...

Said timecop, "I undertook this project so the Gay Nigger Association of America could easily spread the gay nigger seed with a crystal-clear picture and DVD-quality sound. But most of all, I do it for my gay nigg[er]s."
