Quality does not matter...
People are stupid, sensationalism sells, and the people who are looking for actual news are being disenfranchised by things such as the Jackson trial and the latest political "scandal". If the papers want money, maybe they should improve the quality of their stories, eh?
Quality doesn't matter. What matters is that people want the content for free. If it was the most incredible awesome stupendous quality in the world, people would still want it for free. Digital property has no monetary value. The newspapers are starting to find that out.
The easy way to get around all these registrations is to use BugMeNot

Re:What problem?
AVG may run fast, but I've found that its not quite as good as other (non-free) products at catching viruses
Virus Bulletin (BugMeNot Required) does tests of about 30 different antivirus programmes on various versions of windows from NT4 to Server 2003.
They set up computers with the various AV software, and infect the computers with currently common viruses and see which ones catch them. The resuls of 44 of these tests since 1998 for some of the major AV programmes are as follows;
Passed/Failed/NA
Symantec 30/7/7
McAfee 24/18/2
F-Secure 21/12/11
AVG 11/21/12
and the one that I used to use when I ran windows (partly as a result of these tests)
Eset passed 36, failed 3, 5 N/A
AVG is improving, but it still fails these tests periodicly. A few years ago, I would have called recommending AVG downright irresponsible, it had only passed 1 out of 20 tests by Feb 2003 -

40%, Damn them those smart Brits. Why are they Smart? Well because 60% of Americans don't believe in Evolution.
Sorry I can't get the full Gallup Article link, their damn registration kills me. BugMeNot for those who want to read it.
When I originally read that Gallup Poll Headline I thought to myself "What the hell, 30% of this country is borderline retarded." I then read the article and realized that it is not 30% but 60%. Actually 66.6(repeating of course) percent.

My guess is, you either used bugmenot at some point in the past and forgot about it, or someone's been using your computer (and profile.) Either way, there's a cookie on your computer that NYT likes.

You can use http://bugmenot.com/ to bypass the stupid registration/login on the NYT site. It works for quite a few others too.

Re:Moving ads, subscriptions and customization
Here are some end user solutions for these issues:
Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts File
A handy hack that works very well at blocking ads, so long as they aren't hosted on the site itself.
Flashblock
A Firefox extension for blocking the flash based ads. Easy to access the flash on a item by item basis for stuff you do want to get to.
Bug Me Not
For circumventing registration.
Still not ideal, but I find they help quite a bit. RSS may be the answer long term though because of the flexibility it gives you format-wise. Now if news sites would just implement RSS 2.0 or Atom... -
Re:Dont make me register!
Simple... BugMeNot.com - as long as others are willing to help 'share' free accounts for this kind of annoyance.

Do not watch this movie
Oh, dear lord no. Please stay away from "What the #$*! Do We Know." It's like a parody of a Nova special with excellent camera work where they decided about a third of the way through that they were going to ignore science and misapply quantum mechanics to people's lives to bring forth the message of some cultist. And then they decided two-thirds of the way through to start dropping acid (despite their message that pharmeceuticals are bad) and throw in some 3D animated cells dancing with each other.
Read the reviews at the IMDB, most of which lambast this movie. If the site bugs you about needing registration to read the reviews, use BugMeNot.
And no, most of the objections have nothing to do with the reviewers being to closed-minded to understand the movie. They result from dissapointment in what could have been a good movie into becoming a vehicle for twisting interviews with scientists and lies and half-truths into cult propaganda. -

Re:If true...
I'm in a programming class right now (literally: my notes are open in another window) and GOTO hasn't even come up. It's an intro-level class, but... I see WHY it's used, and it for sure has its purpose, but if there's a more efficient way to program, duh people are going to go for it. And "registration required"? Ha: http://www.bugmenot.com/ (And yes, the NY Times is on there.)

Um, right
Government is standing up to IP owners? That must be why the US Congress keeps on extending the copyright term, or why just yesterday, it became known that the music industry is trying to hijack serious crime legislation in Europe, which would equate file sharers with terrorists and mobsters.
The suggestion that the IP debate is balanced against IP owners seems ludicrous to me. See this article for more more arguments (Bugmenot - countrywise/globalportal). -

Re:This is the best the magic wand can do
The upcoming DST changes will reduce the amount of energy we use. This is good. Hopefully, market forces and high gas prices will change American buying habits for autos. If gas prices stay high people will slowly change their buying patterns on vehicles, their views of mass transportation, etc... I know the DART rail here in Dallas is now over crowded due to high fuel costs. When I drive to work I notice that the parking lot for the DART rail nearby is often overflowing with cars. Here is a quote from our local Dallas Morning news:
"Rising gas prices are prompting a growing number of North Texas commuters to park their cars in favor of buses and trains, but Dallas Area Rapid Transit is considering service cuts to help balance its budget.
Though DART ridership has increased 11 percent on its bus and light-rail lines and 18 percent on the Trinity Railway Express commuter line, the additional passengers have not helped the agency's finances." -Dallas Morning News (Subscription Required) Bugmenot.com
Thats market forces in action and thats how capitalism works.

Obligatory Wikipedia Link
The definition of a planet is disputed. Please see [[Definition of planet]] for more information.
Although planets are the principal component of the solar system other than the sun, a precise definition of the term is surprisingly elusive. This article details the questions that may arise when trying to formulate a strict definition of the word.
For most astronomers the issue will be decided by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). According to a published report from Nature magazine (corresponding entry at BugMeNot), the discovery of 2003 UB313 (which is a Kuiper Belt object bigger than Pluto) has forced the issue. An IAU committee which had already been working on a definition is now expected to promulgate one soon.

Bypass Web Site Registration
With the BugMeNot FireFox extension: http://www.bugmenot.com/ It rocks.

Slightly different alternativeFor those free website logins and such, you can just use BugMeNot to fill in boxes with other dummy accounts.
It won't do much for real passwords, but at least you don't have to worry about coming up with different passwords for things that don't have to be secure.

cookie swapping?
A while ago I heard about an interesting project to screw all those loyalty/tracking cards you get for shopping.
The idea is to swap cards with someone else every so often so that their data gets completely screwed up.
Could something similar be done with cookies to rm -rf the data recorded by the personal data collectors, bugmenot is about as closest thing I've found to cookie swapping. -

Re:nyt
Have you tried Bug Me Not. It's a firefox extension.
Just right click on the "Signup" thing and click "bugmenot" and it goes on the internet and finds you a login. It also works for alot of other sites out there.
Check it out ... the best part is it's free. -
Re:BugMeNotor we can all use this from now on: username AnonymousCoward password password
No, actually, you can't. The NYT routinely removes accounts that are being used by more than one IP.
That's why you need to use the bugmenot.com site mentioned above (i.e. logins that no longer work are removed from bugmenot's database). Furthermore, bugmenot works with other sites besides the NYT.
Also, for Firefox users, you can try the extension.
