Re:Yeah but...
Look, nobody is saying that progress has to stop but not all progress is good. In this case it's very dangerous for us to assume that Google has everybody's well being in mind, remember the wifi mapping (snooping) that went on with their street view cars? That class action suit is still moving forward and it shows now insidious these privacy breaches can be in the name of innovation. Society in general is losing privacy in small and sometimes in very large ways
all in the name of progress or government snooping every day and the rate at which technology enables this to happen shouldn't mean that we start allowing our
personal habits or preferences to become open for public inspection. Unfortunately for us, our leaders have no interest in protecting our rights when it comes to their own retarded interests led by people who have Star Trek fetishes; that needs to be disassembled as well. Sure, there's public information that I don't mind people knowing but there's other information that nobody should know nor have an interest in knowing because it's not any of their concern. When we start trading some technological achievement for privacy then there should be a corresponding assessment to the benefits of what we're getting. Google gives away "free" services but really they're not free at all. They mine your information, your e-mails, where you go (if you use maps) etc. Facebook does the same thing and also links your information against other sources, like your buying preferences. There are other companies with names you may not be familiar with but they're out there digging and mining around for information about you, how much you make, what you buy, where you go and they dig far deeper than you may realize. What all of this does is allows others whether they're commercial or government entities to classify you, to put you into a box with a label on it and those labels can be dangerous to your liberty and how you work and live. Want that new job? Well now your future employer can just look at your social network behaviors to see how you'd fit with their organization, or to look for reasons not to hire you.So while the article is proposing that Google would be more trusted say than Ford or GM to come up with a self-driving vehicle, there's no fucking way that I will ever purchase a vehicle with a ToS that would allow somebody else to grab more information about me and my habits or preferences because that's part of the driving experience in this country, to get away without somebody looking over your shoulder on where you go and why. Is that naive? No because I know there are speed cameras, license plate readers, toll tag scanners and cameras and GPS trackers in my phone already or in my car and while I am still opposed to all of that, I do what I can to minimize that exposure to it and I still fight against it and will continue to do so.

Re:Of course...
Does simply not wanting to pay more for something mean there is a shortage?
Yes, that is the definition of a shortage. When demand/supply is high enough that developers can demand salaries that many segments of the market cannot afford, then there is a shortage.
Where are the long lines of companies waiting at the developer stations?
Everywhere. Maybe you have not been paying attention.

$location is the new silicon valley
I hate to see politicians toss this phrase around. Silicon Valley is not just a place with a bunch of nerds working in an internet factory, its an ecosystem of cultural diversity built around technology, art and science. I understand everyone wants a slice of the Tech pie, but New Yorks industry centers on finance. everything im looking at is "large financial firm", none of the startups or 3d printers in tfs. Whining about long term leases making it difficult for your city to be next->siliconvalley() is lik whining about the space under your desk being so insufficient as to preclude you from rewriting the linux kernel.

Survey Methodology
Link:
http://www.careerbuilder.com/share/aboutus/pressreleasesdetail.aspx?id=pr656&sd=9%2F15%2F2011&ed=9%2F15%2F2099
" This survey was conducted online within the U.S. by Harris Interactive© on behalf of CareerBuilder.com among 5,299 U.S. workers (employed full-time; not self-employed; non-government); ages 18 and over between May 18 and June 8, 2011 (percentages for some questions are based on a subset, based on their responses to certain questions). With a pure probability sample of 5,299 one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- 1.35 percentage points. Sampling error for data from sub-samples is higher and varies. "
The sample size seems good, however, there is zero indication of how the sample is composed. Is the sample truly random and representative of the general population of telecommuters? Do the results vary based on factors such as geography, industry, age, primary method of communication in a company, relative importance of method of communication, etc.?
Those last two bits are important. In my current job role at my current company, instant messenger is the primary form of communication, followed by email, then face-to-face, then teleconference/e-meeting, and lastly phone. Working at home / telecommuting rarely impacts the effectiveness of our communication, which seems to be the primary concern here. However, other job roles / other companies (SO as one example), telecommuting simply would not work and effectiveness of communication would drop dramatically.
By itself, this is a start, but, not sufficient to draw conclusions of any sort. I'm hoping they do a followup to this survey in the future. -

Re:Is it news or isn't it?
Microsoft is a company that cannot "let go" of anything. Take
.NET for example -- it is a miserable failure that they won't let die.A few web sites that use
.NET technology:Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/
Home Shopping Network - http://www.hsn.com/
Buy.com - http://www.buy.com/

Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Maybe you should tell all those sites that
.NET is a miserable failure? Or if you were just (successfully) karmawhoring, I am sorry to interrupt the circle jerk on here. -
Re:crazy thing called freedom
> the people who went to work at the WTS on 9/11 didn't have a choice about airline safety measures
Yes they did. As an employee, where I choose to work is just that: *my* choice.
The most dangerous jobs in the world include fishing and farming. Does a fisherman have "no choice" about having a dangerous job? Does a sensible fisherman not take into account the kind of boat he'll be on, and how safety-conscious the rest of the crew appears to be?
And yes, I am suggesting that for government to not distort the market for safety, it must also not set distorting maximums on the restitution that must be paid to airlines whose lax standards are found (in private arbitration, of course) to be wholly or partially liable for damages.
Government does a crappy job providing food and cars. Why would anyone expect it to do better at providing safety or arbitration services?

Re:The Worlds Lost Decade
I personally run/have run many huge enterprise apps on
.NET. It's actually a pretty good platform if you know what you're doing.Don't take my word for it, though.
When I googled for what you asked to google, I found this list of sites running ASP.NET.
Costco - http://www.costco.com/
Crate & Barrel - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/

Newegg http://newegg.com/
Geico http://geico.com/
Capital One http://capitalone.com/
Zecco http://zecco.com/Maybe you should tell those sites that
.NET is a unproven technology? Or will you try to argue that these are not huge enterprise apps? Just because you want something to be true(or maybe you were just karma whoring) doesn't make it true. C# is a better language than Java, though each one has it's strengths. And even conceding your point(I don't) that Java is faster, speed is not everything. Or we would all be coding in assembly or machine code. -
There is also the imporatant things to NOT say
MSN Careers has an article titled You Said What?! - 43 Things Actually Said in Job Interviews.
Yeah, everyone can be stupid in an interview. Learn and laugh from their mistakes so you don't make one. -
Look at the Classifieds
If you are going to work in the UK or in the US you need to look at the job offers. I would start with entry level contract positions since they will usually give you a chance faster than a full time position. In addition you will be able to work three or four contracts and get a feel for what you like.
http://www.computingcareers.co.uk/jobs/programmer-developer/ are jobs in the UK.
http://www.careerbuilder.com/Jobseeker/Jobs/JobResults.aspx?SB%3Asbkw=computer+programming&SB%3As_freeloc=&SB%3Asbfr=30&sbsbmt=Find+Jobs+%C2%BB&cid=US&excrit=QID%3DA6656194759657%3Bst%3Da%3Buse%3DALL%3BrawWords%3Dprogramming%3BCID%3DUS%3BSID%3D%3F%3BTID%3D0%3BENR%3DNO%3BDTP%3DDRNS%3BYDI%3DYES%3BIND%3DALL%3BPDQ%3DAll%3BPDQ%3DAll%3BPAYL%3D0%3BPAYH%3Dgt120%3BPOY%3DNO%3BETD%3DALL%3BRE%3DALL%3BMGT%3DDC%3BSUP%3DDC%3BFRE%3D30%3BQS%3Dsid_unknown%3BSS%3DNO%3BTITL%3D0%3BJQT%3DRAD%3BJDV%3DFalse&IPath=QHKCV are jobs in the US.
You will notice that the UK has a lot more need to C++, JAVA and C and the US, no matter how much you hate Microsoft, has more SQL, Visual Studio, C# and other .Net and Web Based programming jobs.
I specialize in the n-tier web and windows application with Visual Studio, C#, Asp.net, and other Web Technologies and never want for work in the Orlando, FL area.
Good Luck and unless your married, program and read about programming every waking moment. If you are married unfortunately I can't help you. This is coming from someone married for twenty-three years. I got all my computer geek out of the way before I married her. -

Advertising for a guard - "bring your own gun"
I couldn't make this stuff up. They're advertising for a security guard,
"We are seeking motivated individuals"
... translation: work cheap."Prior security experience preferred."
... translation: not really a requirement, but if we can get it at no extra cost ..."Some College is also preferred."
... if you managed to drop out of college instead of high school, you're more "presentable" to our insurers, who are now royally pissed at us ... ... and if you scroll down to the bottom of the page:"Armed Hand-gun license/permit and ability to supply own weapon a Huge Plus! : translation: "we're cheap! Re:Cruel
Order a salad or an appetizer for your meal. At the pot-luck, get smaller portions of each thing you really want, and fruit or something for dessert. If you look you can find it.
In my case -- and I would expect for many others -- I cannot be surrounded by bad food and not have a little here, a little there, and before I know it consume 600+ calories. I can't have Oreos in the house or they'll be gone within a day. Yes, I could probably master some special self-discipline techniques, but it is far easier for me to simply keep the crap out of the house and avoid fooding with friends and family.
Unfortunately, friends and family only plan their activities around food. The thin ones either don't understand why one meal can hose a whole week or why I "can't just eat a little" when everyone else is eating a lot; the fat ones have already failed in their diets and essentially would like me to fail too because it would make them feel better.
If they're real friends, your physical appearance won't matter to them and they'll treat you the same.
This is a tangent but it matters. The thing is, my friends ARE "real friends" but they DO treat me a little differently, they don't really see it and couldn't do much about it anyway even if they did. It's partly an inversion of the "pretty people get more" thing (see http://www.careerbuilder.com/JobSeeker/careerbytes /CBArticle.aspx?articleID=312 ) and partly the fact that I'm the odd one out with special issues regarding food and exercise. I'm not trying to sound whiny, it's simply the truth.
Thanks for the kudos, though. -
Re:Following Careerbuilder
Exactly. Once again, Yahoo is playing follow the leader. Given the number of newspapers they are partnering with, it sounds like it will certainly help increase Hotjobs lagging user base (or at least the quantity of their postings). But this certainly is not going to impact Yahoo's prospects by any stretch of the imagination, particularly since CareerBuilder has already been doing this with the big conglomerates such as Gannett and Knight Ridder for at least 6 years.
The #1 portal honor is still Yahoo's to lose, but if they don't make some major changes to their search and advertising network Google will soon gain an advantage that Yahoo may not be able to counter. Considering where they get their revenue, responding to critics and investors by spending a lot of time and money propping up their ancillary businesses while search enhancements continually get delayed is just completely counterintuitive. -
USA! USA! USA!
The US has been forced to contend with heinously patronizing and crude TV advertising for decades, but the UK's advertising industry has managed to create art out of the dirty act of selling.
What do this snaggle-toothed limey think he's doing, slandering our great American advertising industry? There is indeed a cream that rises to the top of the business, raising TV commercials above the mere act of shilling. -

Ok, lets talk Unix!
Right, lets see what we have here. SCO Unix, a Unix variant which isn't really well known apart ofcourse from the black suiing pages. Further more; to use it I'd have to cough up quite some cash. But what can SCO Unix offer me more? Perhaps paying up even more to be allowed and use their development tools. I wonder what would happen if I fail to understand some of their licenses.
Now, on the other hand I know of this other company which also does something with Unix which, strangely enough, is available for free. Not only that, they even allow me to use their development tools completely free of charge. Not just that, no, whenever I use one of their products they send me a full license for the specific product which doesn't expire, doesn't allow this other company to suddenly go back on their promise, doesn't limit me to use their products and most of all: doesn't have this weird taste of hypocracy.
This other company even allows me to use their tools and technology to do some nifty mobile programming and I don't even have to attend any courses if I don't want to. Just read or download a tutorial online.
Gee, this is a hard choice. Do I go for some money which hardly covers my expenses and the option of a free car or do I go with free stuff available now which can (and is likely to:) dramaticly increase my options to find myself a nice job.
Such tough choices, NOT. -
And they're hiring too...
I suppose this is probably related to this job ad I got in my email this morning
I would apply, but I'm happy in my current job. Also, with my well known skills at smooth talking and diplomacy it would be too easy ;-) -
have you done anything?
do you have a resume loaded with all your experience ready? if so, spend the time to load it onto the following sites:
Monster
hot jobs
Dice
Career Builder
and www.yourlocalnewspaper.com
Don't worry about your one year at a company so far, people will understand it was your first job, you got your experience and 'want to find somewhere to build your career' (or at least that's a line that used to work).
Unless you're a lame NFL Head Coach who's original team fired your a$$, no one is going to come looking to give you a job. Stay up late one night, get yourself online and order and extra shot of caffeine in the AM. -

Finding Jobs
Some of the comments about DICE are right on, but what about some of the other sites?
I have actually found a couple good positions using monster and careerbuilder.
One of the new trends I am seeing is the use of LinkedIn
Currently I think there are more recruiters on LinkedIn than there are job seekers, but as it grows in popularity being able to directly find either skilled people or jobs could be a good thing. I think it has the potential to bybass the traditional Careerbuilder, Monster, Dice , etc... -

I Love PoliticiansOddly enough, before visiting Slashdot today I visited msn.com and noticed this article which says that business executives and lawyers have very low 'prestige' in todays society and Scientists actually have a very high level of prestige
My point being that, when actions like this are taken to beat down the guy who obviously was forced to complete development on an application in 2 weeks instead of 2 months because of budget constraints because we're involved in a war we shouldn't even be in right now.... it make's me realize why that could be true.

Not everybody who has searched the help wanted ads and submitted a resume has been offered an interview let alone a job, You Insensitive Clod(tm)!

More Information
All the employer-paid job hunting sites such as Monster , HotJobs , Dice , and CareerBuilder make job hunters look at the same job again and again. JobFan has posted raw data and summaries here showing that fully 75% of postings are duplicates. And more than 40% are posted by recruiters. That just ain't right!

Career Builders to help you find a new job when you are done with the lawyers. -

Re:Quality of their products not at issue!
Actually your percentage of 99.999% is inaccurate. According to a note in this article there are 7.1 million millionaires in the United States.
The United States has around 250 million people. According to me, since I consider a millionaire rich and powerful, that would mean that 2.8% will become rich and powerful and 97.2% of them will never be rich and powerful.
Other than that I agree with what you said. Except I would substitute "People" for the word "Americans". People are easily programmed and thinking for one's self is one of the most important things someone can learn. -
