In 1632, Galileo completed his Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems -- Ptolemaic & Copernican. This publication, a twelve year effort, presented all the arguments for and against the two great world systems--the Copernican (sun centered) and the Aristotelian or Ptolemaic (earth centered). Galileo also warned the Church of a trap they were walking into:

"Take note, theologians, that in your desire to make matters of faith out of propositions relating to the fixity of sun and earth you run the risk of eventually having to condemn as heretics those who would declare the earth to stand still and the sun to change position--eventually, I say, at such a time as it might be physically or logically proved that the earth moves and the sun stands still."[16]

The Roman Catholic hierarchy and their Aristotlean-Ptolemaic advisors did not heed this advice. The Roman Curia promptly banned and confiscated Galileo's monumental work; and it became the basis for his second trial, censure, and lifetime house arrest by the Holy Office of the Inquisition in 1633. The Roman Catholic Church convicted him of breaking his agreement of 1616 and of teaching the Copernican theory as a truth and not a hypothesis. They suspected him of holding heretical opinions condemned by the Church, which they ordered him to abjure [abandon a false opinion]. Seven of the ten Cardinals presiding signed his condemnation.[17]

The Holy Tribunal in Galileo's condemnation states: "The proposition that the sun is the center of the world and does not move from its place is absurd and false philosophically and formally heretical, because it is expressly contrary to the Holy Scripture. The proposition that the earth is not the center of the world and immovable, but that it moves, and also with a diurnal motion, is equally absurd and false philosophically, and theologically considered, at least erroneous in faith."[18]

Well, you did ask....

At one time, the Earth was substantially flat.

Actually, the idea that most people believed the earth was flat is a true "willful suspension of disbelief". Some quick sources I found googling are here here and here

Obviously the 'who started the myth' question does not have a clear answer, and there have been groups that have believed the Earth to be flat (such as the Hebrews, apparently). But there are so many things that give evidence of the earth's roundness (easy example: stand on a tall hill and look towards the horizon) that of course most people have never believed the Earth to be flat. Saying otherwise is usually just standard "Isn't (Western) modern man so clever and civilized!" propoganda.

Sorry, I haven't seen it (the story of my life since the twins were born :-) so I can't comment directly. However, I did do some searching and found some pages (here and here) that praised it for not having any foul language at all but I did find one that said it had two "profanities" in it but that it was "an excellent pick for families". Sounds like the G-rating is working.

I know the rating system isn't perfect but I believe that since Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" the MPAA has been pretty strict about G ratings.

I will openly admit that I do not have a deep knowledge of the teachings of the bible, and that I am an atheist, who was agnostic for quite some time... I frequently enjoy discussions with those who's views differ from my own in these matters, but this is one point that I have never understood.

I did just read genesis one here And in reading it I saw nothing that says to me that god could not have simply set the evolution process in motion. Where is the incompatibility between creation and evolution?
Is it because he said that we were created in his image? If this is the case, then please explain to me further... Why does his image have to be some static thing?

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the US has had a "state religion" for some time now. It is called secular humanism. It is a religion according to the Supreme Court. It is taught exclusively in government schools. A priesthood of humanists has been created and is funded from public monies. And, guess what, the religion of secular humanism supports stem-cell research. Imagine that! Seriously, if the humanists would do what they say they do and question the existing moral authority, they would have to stop believing their own hype.

Biologists extracting blood cells from T-Rex bones can get a fairly good idea of an upper limit for the bone's age, based on home much the organic material has decayed.

The only dating method using how "much the organic material has decayed" that I know of would be radiocarbon 14 dating.

I'm not talking about C14, I'm talking about meat, bone and blood cells.

What one person finds essential free speech someone else will always find offensive. Persecuted and paranoid individuals will always find something sick and disgusting about what you love. Kiddie porn is one case where almost everyone agrees that it is offensive. If you want to see what "offensive" means, take a look at this review of the Truman Show (actually the viewer responses). The site is full of them. Chip away at your freedoms and soon you will have none in the face of people like this.

Okay, this is a bit off the original topic (how often do we let that happen?) but I don't have much to say about Teletubbies (never seen the show) or Jerry Falwell (never seen him or read his stuff). But I do find it interesting when people say explicitly or implicitly that God is not real and that all intelligent people (especially good geeks like us) can see this.

Friedrich Nietzsche was probably the first to publicly state and very convincingly argue that "God is dead." It seems that lots of people today like to believe this, or at least live like God is irrelevant. But what many people don't know is that to take God out of any part of our lives is to remove the foundation for a corporate and individual morality. Basically no one has a right to say what is right and what is wrong in any area where God is totally taken out of the picture.

One example, albeit extreme, of what happens when God is removed from the way we live and what we think is Hitler. It is a well-known fact that Nietzsche's writings became the cornerstone of the Nazi Party and Hitler's personal philosophy. And we all know what atrocities he did in killing millions of people. But again with no God, life really has no basis for value. We are either illusions or just the product of random acts of physics. But as several "intelligent" people throughout history (C.S. Lewis "Problem of Pain", Pascal "Pascal's Wager", Francis Schaeffer, Ravi Zacharias) have written and intelligently argued that these are untenable world views when taking all of life into account.

Another thing that isn't widely know is that Nietzsche had a breakdown at the end of his life and spent his last years in an insane asylum. That's something I am trying to avoid.

Now as far as further arguing for God or Christianity many other people have done so far better than I could probably do here.

The only thing I will say is Christianity hinges on the man Jesus who lived about 2000 years ago. If he was God, lived a perfect life, was crucified on a cross, died, and rose back to life, then you would be a fool not to be a Christian. If any of these were not true or did not happen then you would be a fool to be a Christian. It's your call, check the "facts" out yourself. As for me, I'm betting my life on Jesus.

Or look up anything on the Philosopher Pascal or read one of C.S. Lewis's books (other than the Narnia Chronicles).

Something that I will throw in for free to lend some credibility to Christian Computer Geeks: The Book The Mythical Man Month: Essays on Software Engineering - Anniversary Edition by Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. contains many Christian references and principals and the author seems by all accounts a Christian. I will say that one reason that this book is such a great book (check out the review and discussion in Slashdot: link above) even after 20 years is because it is based on Christian principals. He has just applied them to Computer Programming and Computer Projects.

Then of course there is the Bible. Try reading it sometime. And a word of advice, remember the context of the scripture before you start quoting it all over the please.
