Why steal software?
Why steal software? Many software packages are reasonably priced, and many are offered with rebates and upgrade coupons. See more here
On the other hand, most of the truely great apps are written for linux. They are usually feature packed, have very little security problems, etc.. Examples would be MythTV, Apache, MySQL, the GIMP, Mozilla and Firefox, etc... The list goes on!

Re:At long last.
That is not the responsibility of the engineers. The product management team should specify the power vs features trade-off in the design requirements. The engineers will do thier best to design to the requirements. Even now, most laptops are designed for the latest and greatest features. Most people do simple email, word processing, etc...
It wouldn't be too hard to design a new laptop with the latest form factor improvements, but put slower components in the design. That would yield a laptop with better battery life. The problem is that many older components are not availiable as they ae phased out with the latest top of the line ones.

The site is slashdotted right now so I can't read the article. Does this mean that if you forget to download a show, you can do a couple clicks in MythTV and find the show as a torrent to download?

You are assuming that they port it without creating more security vulnerabilities. It should be re-written from the ground up with security in mind from the start.

All Your Secrets Are Belong to Us
Well, We have this, traffic light cameras, security cameras everywhere, probably tracking via cell phone and GPS, personal and rental cars with built in GPS, grocery store coupon cards, etc... Where will it end? I guess it probably won't ever stop. Data mining is becoming the hot feature of buisnesses and goverments. Is it still worth the fight for privacy? If you abide by the laws, then there shouldn't be any problems.
I'm sure there are people out there that detest all the personal surveillance, but if a crime is committed and caught on tape, I think it should be used to prosicute the criminal. I personally don't want to be tracked everywhere I go, but if I was mugged in an alley, I would hope a camera would catch the criminal. It would bring some justice to me and *help* to justify the big brother tactics.

Re:Believe it or not...
That sounds pretty resonable. On a side note, I bet the PC makers kinda like spyware. After all, it will eventually slow down the average joe's PC, and unless he knows how to remoe spyware, he might upgrade to get a "faster" PC.

Re:Now I get to spend more money...
No kidding, the movie studios sure do know how to milk the money on these gimmicks. At least some of the companies tell you up front that they will be releasing new editions with more features in X months. I hate it when they suprise you later on with an edition you wish you had waited for.

What about compatability?
I researched long and hard to find out if my current DVD player was most compatible with DVD+R or DVD-R. It's an Apex 500w model. Turns out it's not compatible with either standard, although some online reports conflict with my findings. I eventually had to buy a new dvd player to play anything that I burned in my Liteon DVD+/-RW drive.
I can't imagine that all these new standards will work with many existing DVD players. Everyone is always playing catch-up, although all DVD movies rented from Blockbuster will always work in older models. Just getting a new DVD writer for the latest and greatest standards will result in having to buy more electronics equipment for the house. Hell, even the current +R and -R standards haven't been hashed out.

Re:Difference between NX and protected mode bits?
This is just an attempt by the hardware developers to patch problems made by the software developers. Ultimately in the end, we will lose performance because they are adding overhead to general processing. The software developers (or companies) should be held responsible. It's no different than trying to patch a patch a patch, etc...
This is why linux is so efficient; bugs are corrected in the kernel and recompiled for the new releases. It's a much better solution that adding code bloat or processor overhead to solve these types of issues.

Re:Security...
Security at the hardware layer is definately important, but don't under-estimate the power of a cheap NAT router. If if you don't need one, it will still keep out many of the IP port scans and vulnerabilities. I have a linksys with logging enabled, and it's amazing to watch the port scan in real time. I'm sure most of them are from script kiddies, or people that have compromised machines. But it sure does the job. NAT routers can be picked up for next to nothing these days.
Of course it doesn't help with email viruses or attacks from the LAN side (ie, dumb users), but it helps cut down on the worm and viruses that propagate over the web.

What will be really un-fair, is when we rely on the tech too much. Once (when?) it fails, we will have to go back to the basics. I hope that they will still teach the basics in the future..... If not, we will be sitting ducks.

Re:Just think about it!
Yeah, once I packed up a product at work and had the shipping guy do all the Fedex labels for me. After it was weighed and the labels were attatched and before the fedex truck came, we had a quick firmware update. I asked the shipping guy if I could simply open the box from the bottom to get the unit, update the firmware and repackage it in the same box. He said sure as long as the weight didn't change. I told him the firmware update would add a couple pounds and asked him if it would be a problem. He was pissed because he thought he would have to re-do all the shipping labels. lol

Re:State of the art?
What's also really cool is that these "state of the art" effects actually move pretty quickly. These effects will probably be pretty dull in 2-3 years. By that time, most of these techniques will be filtered down to video games, starting to show up in home-based rendering packages, etc. It kinda goes back to yesterdays article about innovation vs copying in the workplace. Make you kinda wonder what will be next.

Re:Great site & Favs
This is not a troll, but I've seen tons of these sites suffer from a slashdotting. Now I understand that the Slashdot crowd can deliver quite a punch, but many of these Open Source CMS systems have too many mysql database queries per page. That will reduce your capacity even further than bandwidth. Especially on a popular shared hosting plan. I'm a huge Postnuke fan and I usually have about 25 people on my site at a time (max), and one day got slashdotted. I saw the number of users grow to about 350 online at one time (based on a 5 minute interval). The page slowed down some, but I was suprised that it stayed up the whole time.
Disclaimer: I'm not sure how MANY people it actually takes to bring down a page, but this was a huge number of visitors for my site. Anyone know how many people are on Slashdot at any given time?

Re:Drupal
I evaluated the same, but settled on Postnuke. The communinity there is also very nice and helpful. One of my defining moments as a Postnuke user is that I got slashdotted a few months back. I was really surprised how well Postnuke held up to the load. I'll probably never get that much traffic that quick, but it's nice to know. One thing I read about a lot of popular CMSs is that there can be way to many mysql database queries each time a page loads. Make sure you get a CMS that's designed to be fast from the ground up. Once a lot of work goes into a CMS, it's sometimes hard to go back and re-write the core.

Re:Don't forget the other problem...
Yeah, you'd think even if you you had sorry filters in place, some filetering would be better than none. Giving up is just the wrong thing to do. Many people have had good success with Spam Assassin, even if you have to fine-tune it by hand it should help with the obvious and common spam emails. Some of the spam will always get though, but it shouldn't be too had to catch the majority of spam.

Re:HFS+ defrag source
That certainly sounds like a good idea. What are the trade-offs though? I guess it may take slightly longer to open a file, but that seems like it would be worth it in my opinion. Are there any other drawbacks? What about files larger than 20M?

Re:AMD are back
I agree. AMD has some really great products. We always hear about Intel's huge R&D budget. I'm not sure how much of that is alloted to processor design, but it doesn't seem like they've been able to outrun AMD. AMD might not always have the fastest chips at any given moment, but they are always close behind. Since I don't buy bleeding edge equipment due to the high cost premiums, AMD is always a solid choice for me.

Re:Upgrade
A similar question is whether or not you can upgrade Redhat. I'm running version 9 now (newbie here) and tried in frustration to upgrade mysql and php this past weekend. All I could find was rpms for fedora, not red hat. I know redhat is being discontinued, but it was a nightmare for me. I tried to install from the source code, but got stuck in dependancy hell. Since I have a pretty fresh redhat install, I'm considering dumping it for a different distro. I'm currently debating between debian, fedora core 2, and mandrake 10. I may install each one and see what I can handle. Linux definately has a learning curve and I am just not there yet.

Re:Ugh...
That is true... I guess I had the term "script kiddies" in my head and assumed that these were pre-college programmers. I'm getting a little older now, but I assume that they are probably teaching programming in high-school now. Does anyone know what grade the first introductory programming classes are now offered in?

Re:Ugh...
I imagine that most of these virus writers are not formally educated in programming, but able to hack together code snippets they find on the web. It's a wonder some of them work as well as they do. I doubt they do peer review or use a CVS to manage their code.

P.H.T.T.P.
Wow this gets me thinking, what about P_HTTP?
All those poor sites being slashdotted would surely benefit from the principles of this technology, would they not?
Does such a technology already exist?
PS: I have just demonstrated a sig troll (guerrilla marketing). A hardcoded FP shameless plug right in the middle of some half coherent content that will be 1) clicked by you and 2) spidered by search engines. Be aware slashdotters, your site is plagued with this crap. Use your mod points for awesome. I have karma to burn so mod me down, but this needed to be said. -

Pretty cool
It's obvious that this guy has some programming ntalent. I wonder if Google will chase him down and we'll see this at labs.google.com soon?
That makes me start to wonder... Maybe the best way to get a job with a company you like is to write some slick code that helps to benefit the company. Once the company finds out about your project, they might decide to hire you. It's kinda of like writting a customized resume for a particluar company.

Last day of the month. Check out all the deals before some expire. Of course new ones will start in the beginning of April. No April fools jokes here! -
Re:Someone explain this to me, please.
Yes, your statement is true. While I could go to all the different sites to find my daily news, I try to save time by going to Slashdot. They link to different news articles that II may interested in. They've recently linked to techjapan, ars technia, and toms hardware. I'm sure those site publish great articles that Slashdot doesn't always pick up on, but Slashdot does provide a general overview.
On a similar note, I used to visit all the deal websites each day to make sure I don't miss out on a hot sale. To save time, I started this page to collect them all in real time. Anyone can use it and search deals from multiple websites. Clicking a link takes you to the orginating web page. So I guess I'm running a portal like Slashdot by merely linking to other sites. -
Nerdy friend connection?
What ever happened to people meeting at the mall, bars, concerts, school, etc...??
I hate to admit it, but I imagine most of these social-network people are the nerdy type. Not that I'm saying that's bad, but most of us probably already have some nerdy friends. Why not get out and meet people in real life to havae a well-balanced friend social network?
Although the open-source project is cool.
