2560x1024 fractal wallpapers
since i have a 2560x1024 (crt) setup myself i've made some spangly wallpapers for that resolution...
they're available as the "pixelbath" series on deviantart (http://lyc.deviantart.com/ and on a faster server (http://mysticgd.com/thomas/slinkyspace). -
Re:I can't check my email!
Hey, I'm wanting to start selling some of my photrography
Start by putting them on a site where people can review them and then don't listen to the Paula on those sites - they say everything is a nice photo.
After you do that, you will sadly learn that your photo lie in the suck-istani region. You can always try to sell stuff here or here (caution - my affiliate link, I get a kickback if you sign up) , but then you are competing with this http://www.deviantart.com/print/47625/ -

the media is the message
since everyone bitches about how they have no content, let's see how many present their content, or rather: how many are black text on white background...
EVIL
* underlined+bold
* drop shadow
* cream background, not much of an improvement. some of the header text is glossy (shiney / embossed / see above one / other various "auto-artistic" trash ).
* the tiny images illustrating each entry, are dithered (i guess with a "web palette" [making it look even more horrible], which people stopped doing 5+ years ago) then jpg'd.
* cyan background (the name of 100% green + 100% blue)
* purple text, orange links. no, that's not better.
* yes i really want to be tortured with your family album pics
* half of the people leave directly (or die) with the header
* light yellow (piss-water yellow?) background.
* "I.Mter-
views" ?
i don't get it. dashes in headlines are satan.
* scary vector portrait
* horrible. evil. tasteless.
* scarier than the sixapart girl.
* yellow background.
GOOD
* pear/white background. title with first letter biggie, first line in different font from rest.
* greenish tasty tone over everything ...which i didn't follow. great. thanks. as for the equally bad link-colours being that horrible default-blue/purple, it was only around 10%. this was checking 70% of the a-list. methinks those popular people should hire someone to design their site
good design = pyros, don't remember any other. and yeah, it's not a blog.
says intersting things = ms g33k. who i'm not sure is a good thing to link, i won't link myself. -
Tuning/modding your mouse
Currently I got so used to "clickless wheels" in mice that I find it hard to use a mouse with standard "clicking wheel" where I have to use some force to turn it. I always remove the spring that's responsible for blocking the wheel from mice I use. For my home use I went further though - removing the rubber band and replacing it with a custom-made metal ring. One push and I'm 20 pages further. Picture. Great for websurfing, reading/writing and all that stuff. (*disclaimer* This sucks for games.)

Re:Nice MacOS X advert...
It's good to see them acknowledging that their app design on Windows sucks. They're often trying to give them an Aqua-style GUI (see also QuickTime, iTunes) and failing miserably when it's not... well, an OS using Aqua.
I'd rather have them use standard Windows design guidelines. At least the XP UI is skinnable with visual styles, so if they stick to the native UI, they'd deliver skinnable apps that are uniform with the others instead of forcing on their own crap on us.
Heck, then even those of the Windows users that wished to give it an Aqua look could. And others could give it another look, if they're really into these things and care for it. -

Re:Train wreck indeed
Ho ho.
Well the first thing I did with the wretched XP machine they gave me at work was to install Blackbox for Windows. Plus some wallpaer from Deviant Art
Not only does it make the machine pleasant to use but it confuses the hell out of my colleagues :) -
sad.
Wtf? Where are all the Litestep comments?
Since apparently no one's heard of or uses it, Litestep is like fluxbox on Windows and precludes the need for explorer.exe to be running.
Here's an installer.
Here's a module site.
Here and here are some themes for it.
Seriously people. If only the lightweight Linux desktop environments were half as pretty as Litestep. -
Re:I've got an idea!
A patched uxtheme.dll and about 2 or 3 minutes at DeviantArt will clear that right up.
I agree, though. Luna and Royale look godawful. I'd love to see them recruit a better artist for some themes later on. Maybe they can make a cool Sci-Fi theme that looks like the one in Minority Report (just saw it this weekend, otherwise I'd think of a better movie/interface design). -
Re:Balance?
I wouldn't say none goes to peace, but indeed, a large ammount goes to war.

Re:Anime Powerpuff Girls
That's an interesting development, I wonder what the guy drew this would think. He's been doing a comic strip of sorts featuring said girls in an anime sort of style for a while now...

Re:Who's still using mysql?
deviantART does. 1+ million users, 11+ million submissions, hundreds of millions of comments & forum posts, etc... all scaled across dozens of servers.

Re:I'm a heretic! Burn me!Blackbox is very configurable and easy to extend. It fits into the "small tools" Unix paradigm much better than most other WMs. Because of that, it has a lot of positive sentiment among us geeks.
By the way, this screenshot looks mighty sexy. Also, I am surprised I don't see more pre-made integrated desktop packages that glue blackbox and other small tools in a cohesive magical way, like Knoppix does.

She is definitely awesome.

Did it to my 300D (Digital Rebel)
Took the whole camera apart, removed the optical pass filter from the CMOS chip, replaced it with an IR-PASS filter (rejects lessthan 750nm)... and I have a visible focus / IR sensitive camera.
Great shots, too

Re:Games. We need more Games
I picked it up at Deviant Art. I tried to find a direct link for you but there is just too much to wade through. I'm pretty sure I found it in the minimalistic section. Florian Frendt also makes some amazing wallpaper.

rainlender works splendidly
rainlender really is the perfect calendering app for me. I modified the ical skin to shave off the task list, so now i have nice white square that sits on my background with color coded boxes telling me where i need to be and when. no task bar stuff to worry about. just a nice clean background app.
check DA for the original skin so you can see what im talking about. -
Re:I missed somthing...
Take that back, young man. My icons are not too damn big! Wash your mouth out with soap!
You disgust me.
(Actually, I've switched to ones a quarter of the size since then. Also, I got myself a nice Debian laptop, but it's not as customized as the XP box.^-^) -

Re:deviantart mosaics
a link to the mosaic section because it is rather hard to find on their un-navigatable and unsearchable site.
-
deviantART mosaics
This is similar to deviantART mosaics. They don't seem linked to directly on the main page anymore, but they can be found here. A great example of a congruous mosaic is The skin mosaic II.

deviantart mosaics
Deviantart has had a similar idea in its mosaics category for quite some time. Being possibly the largest community art sites it has some nic emosaics in there.

It's like this, except not ASCII. -

Art. For everyone.
I dispute the notion that somehow visual and music artists are a different breed to the "artistic" programmer.
To demonstrate this fallacy: I am all three. Here are my free pictures. Here is some free music. And here is some free software.
There is a bunch more personal expression out there than you know. What do you make of this story, for instance? Or this site?.
I'm certain there are more and better examples out there.

Re:Nice, but late...
Definitely. I purchased a Canon A75 this summer and I couldn't be happier with it. One day I may purchase a DSLR but for now I'm probably just going to grab the telephoto adapter for this cam so I can get a bit more zoom. You can still take good photos (shameless plug) With an inexepensive point and shoot cam.
-
Honestly......
If you need a digital SLR you KNOW you need one from the start. DSLR's are simly for pro's/ experienced (and rich) amatures who need the luxury of interchangable lenses, a fearsome shot speed. Regular users can be perfectly satisfied by regular ditital cameras. 4mp is a good max res. As for zoom - 10X is a nice luxury - but anything above 3 - 4x needs to be stabilised (tripod/monopod) unless the subject is very well lit. The only worrying thing about the market for me is the trend to pack more and more mp's onto an ever smaller plate - while not improving and even downgrading the all important lens quality.
Oh yeah - I forgot to mention DSLR's are VERY big and bulky compared to regular digital cameras.......
I've got a Canon 430 and am entirely satisfied with it here's some pics I made with it: My gallery.
Theres a clean line between DSLR equipped pros (and wannabe pro's) and regular users..... -

Re:fluxbox
XFCE doesn't look like ass, for one. E is a lot like fluxbox, in that they both appeal to gentoo n00b fags that love unusable pseudotransparent terminal emulators and unusably tiny 'futuristic' fonts.
-
not impressed.
i made the largest baby photo using 2500 digital photos each one at least 4.0megapixels in size and some as large as 6 megapixels.
exposure started june 2002 and ended early november 2003.
i used MacOSaiX to put it together on a two year old powerbook, and it took about 12 hours.
it's not seemless, but the mosaic effect is cool. -
Just a stock photo library...
with a stupid name.
btw, Deviant art's stock library has more material available. -
From a Computer Engineer
As a computer engineer, I can usually draw better than my peers. Unlike picking up another porgramming language, I don't think artistic talent can be learned readily, because you need an eye for colors, shapes, and style that I notice my scientific peers just do not possess.
Ever since a kid, I would try and copy styles from mecha comic books. I worked very hard when I was little to draw something as close to the original as possble. Not to sound discouraging, but I don't think it is possible to "learned to be self-sufficient" before your contract is over. What you can do, however, is follow the numerous art tutorials on the net and try your best to duplicate the Photoshop effects to something usable.
As a side-note, here are some of my artwork:
deviantART or My Website
The drawings from my sketchbook are mostly redraw of original artwork by other artists. If you do decide to learn art for future uses, I think the best way to start learning art is to try duplicating a professional artist as close as possible. Once you get an eye for colors, shapes, and line distances, you should be able to realize art concepts in your head. -
Some survival tips from a fellow non-expert.These are some of the things that I've learned from my mistakes and from experience. I was in your situation about two years ago. Enjoy!
- 1. Stock photos. A good picture is worth a 1000 design elements. Start scavenging for stock photos NOW. A good place to start is here: http://sxc.hu/.
- 2. Avoid excessive effects and filters when not needed. Nothing ruins a good design like trying to emboss everything or making it 3D.
- 3. Keep it clean and simple. Think Apple.
- 4. Learn from the experts. Visit places like http://www.deviantart.com/ You can even post designs and get peer reviews. Also, http://http//www.alistapart.com will help.
- 5. Use and abuse CSS. The separation of design elements from everything else will help immensely. You will be amazed by this site: http://www.csszengarden.com/ Change the themes and be amazed by the power of CSS!!!
-
6. Buy graphic design books, preferably those with collections of commercial art made by different designers. Get inspired
;-) - 7. Get a digital camera and take lots and lots of pictures of the world around you. Current examples of designs and logos and ads will help.
Cheers,
Adolfo -
Re:Leave it to the artists?
Personal skill at art is something that is teachable and can be learned. Objects look the way they do because of where they are in relation to the viewer and what their dimensions are. Similarly light has rules which you can learn if you are to duplicate the illusion of light in a 2d representation like a drawing. Textures also have rules and so on. It's all about drawing what you see and not what you think is there. Sure there are people who have this ability from early on but the rest of us can learn very quickly.
I'd suggest getting Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain if the submitter wants to learn for himself. And let me shamelessly plug my Deviant Art site so I can get a few more views. I must finish that Neo drawing sometime... -

The Abu Ghraib Coloring Book
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/11504468/
A small coloring book of images from the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
What do you know about Abu Ghraib? What do you know about coloring books? What do you know about teaching conformity? About desensitization? About media and artist exploitation of suffering for financial gain. This swell coloring book wraps all that and more into nine pages that you can color yourself!
