Re:Great articles...
No. It's the power of propaganda and the majority's voracity for eating it up.
News has been dead for quite some time. It's now "news for ratings" which has far less to do with informing the masses and far more to do with sensationalizing the "juicy" tidbits, which of course keeps our attention longer, adds ratings, and makes corporate media richer. You see, their sole agenda is to make more money. If the board sees a way to make more money, they proceed in doing so. This is a no-brainer. The day of the "news" being a form of public watchdog died years ago. This is just one of the reasons many here find these untold stories to be liberal biased.
The "brain-dead sheep" don't realize their predicament. If they did, they wouldn't be brain dead. They actually "think" they know all they need to know, because if it's important, CNN or Fox will tell me about it which is largely untrue of course. These days, it takes quite a bit of research to get to the meat of the truly important news items, many of which never see an airwave. My most time consuming extra curricular activity is research into many many things, and I will tell you, some of the greatest stories are never told, either due to it's inability to make keep "joe sixpack's" attention (ratings), or fear of being branded unpatriotic. These conclusions are derived from applying critical thinking while following references till no end at times. Some may say it's conspiracy, but I say it has much simpler than that. It has much more to do with propaganda being forced down our throats by those in power, followed by a sensationalizing news media for profit. Put the two together and you will find many succumbing to this "brain-dead sheep" mentality. They trust these sources, and therefore feel they are being told all they need to know in order to form a correct world view, which couldn't be more wrong or dangerous in my opinion.
I get up, go to work, come home, feed the dog, eat dinner with the family, watch Fox, listen for the latest "thing" to fear, conclude that giving agencies more power to combat the origin of that fear is good (fear breeds consent, and they love it) go to bed, wake up, go to work, etc...
Many see the stories in this list as liberal. Of course they do. You see, many conservatives, and many others in fact, see dissent as a damaging force, one that shouldn't be presented. It's hard to get Fox or even CNN to do stories that lambastes our own government and it's leaders. The next day they are labeled "unpatriotic" and they will see a loss in PROFIT in the way of advertisers pulling ads (corporate media's true rulers). A more hypocritical sentiment I couldn't come up with (dissent is NEEDED in a true working democracy), but it's true. These facts are quite pronounced and are very easy to see once you do the research and see how it's presented in the major corporate owned media. At times it's even laughable. All I can think is "my god, people are buying this crap by the bucket load", and it scares me at times.
To get your feet wet, listen to NPR, browse Drudge, read A People's History of the United States : 1492-Present and Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media and then we'll talk. We will then read a few conservative books and a dozen history books and you will start to see your "world view" become a little more informed if nothing else. The point being that unless you are determined to put in the work, you most likely do not have a full understanding of all that is going on in the world, which would include power structures and the enourmous propaganda machine being used to control the masses, quite easily I might add..
Good luck! -
Re:Voting machine manufacturer wants votes for BusWake up.
The regime change is here. The rule of the self-righteous, rabidly religious, human right eroding and nominally conservative but fundamentally a big government that caused so much political damage to the US that it almost negated the goodwill gained during WWII, will finally be over in 2004.
Stop supporting a dead regime. Embrace political and intellectual freedom over dead-end religion and nationalistic dogma!

Funny thing is that Drudge has a blurb on his page that says that the FBI is investigating whether or not the worm caused the blackout. Wouldn't that be awesome, that would make my week.

Prisoners?
From the Drudge Report: Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.
Power outage ... prisoners ... don't they have mechanical backups? For one, to keep the people in, but for another, to let 'em outta their cell if they hafta for whatever reason. -

/. owned by NYT??
Dupes, retractions, poor editing... is
/. owned by the Times? -
Shouldn't NYT tell Google not to cache site?
Shouldn't the NY Times simply tell Google not to cache their site?"
Shouldn't the NY Times simply stop requiring registration to read the news?
Shouldn't they concentrate on telling the truth instead?
btw, someone might want to clue in the techs at NYT about the x-noarchive that they can put into their pages to prevent google from caching, according to google's own directions.
Seems like they want all the benefits of showing up on google searches, without any cost to them. As if making their take of the news available to more people is really a cost at all. -
Developing...This actually seems to be an active article. By simply searching Google News, I get:

Please provide a citation, thankHow about several:
But note the qualifier ``state-wide''. Gore's request, and the resultant Supreme Court cases dealt with recounts in a handful of counties. So even if the court had not taken an activist role, Gore still would have been on the short end after receiving the recount he requested, despite the fact that more voters state-wide cast ballots for Gore.

ROLL CALL ...
Gates showed up at the White House on Wednesday afternoon for a substantive meeting with Homeland Security Department Secretary Tom Ridge. But when he was asked to produce some ID, Gates said he had left it in a vehicle parked nearby. ...
Gates eventually made it past the gates for his meeting with Ridge. And then, with his ID presumably in his pocket, the billionaire huddled with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) to discuss tech policy. -
BREAKING NEWS

the Drudge Report
It's a fairly long running internet news site, an early portal. Run by reporter Matt Drudge, who also does a radio show on sunday nights. Pretty successful, even though it would be considered very plain in appearance, uses simple basic code. I don't recall exactly but it has a tremendous hit count. Drudge is (in)famous for a few decent scoops, one I recall was breaking the clinton/monica lewinsky story. He gets a lot of leaked insider info, I would roughly classify him along the lines of a Jack Anderson style reporting, if you remember him, an earlier (but still active just slowing down) muck raker/expose style reporter.

Re:What's the Point??
The Point would be Talk Radio. It's huge. In fact it's bigger than huge.
This guy already has people paying him for the privelege of listening to his show "24/7." He maintains a 2-week archive.
It's not about the music (is there anyone left who listens to radio for the music?), it's about the gab. This guy's already got one of these radio Tivo's, and has been promoting it's use on his website in his campaign against this guy. And everybody seems to take their cues from this guy, who now has his own nationwide radioshow too. I know as well that NPR audio archives are likewise very popular.
It's all huge, mostly absurd, and now available on-demand. Short term, it make take some money out of the pockets of the outfits that charged for access to their audio archives, but long-term it's gotta be a good thing for a genre that's just getting bigger (and more influential, rightly or wrongly) on a daily basis. -

I just hope those cocksuckers still yelling for more WAR enlist themselves to go fight since their pussy opinions got us their WAR in the first place. Time to be a man and fight for what you believe in, right? Fucking retards.
before some stupid shit comes and lectures us about how Iraq supposedly has chemical weapons, I would ask 'where are they?'. Since Iraq would have used them by now if they had them.

Re:From Arab News, Saudi Arabia
I think this may be the original. It has more text than what you posted. Maybe you got the 'edited' version? Couldn't read salon -- I have no subscription.
FWIW, I really like Drudge Report. He tends to sensationalize his headlines, but he gets stories quickly, and he uses a good share of international, non-US news links. -
Not "News for Geeks"
I hate to rain on your parade, but Iraq war news is not "news for geeks". It is news for armchair generals. If you want war news then tune in to CNN, or anything else for that matter. Check out the Drudge Report if you want constant updates. I come to
/. to get away from the constant drone of war news, not to get more of the same -
I love the Internet
Sitting here at work, I must say that the only thing I really wish I could get would be a live cable feed of some of the news conferences.
All the opinions, perspectives, and breaking news information I could ever want is available online, with the help of places like Slashdot, Fark.com, and of course... Matt Drudge.

Re:Salon killed themselves.
"A well spoken liberal thesis is interesting to read, but a lot of the crap they were slinging was along the lines of "conservatives are so stupid", something I'm not willing to pay for."
Yes, you're right... Only Conservatives are willing to pay for mindless crap such as calling all liberals stupid. -
Sad news ... Maurice Gibb dead at 53
I just read some sad news on Drudge Report - Bee Gees singer Maurice Gibb was found dead in his Miami hospital room this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly a Disco icon.

Effective...
Doing things of this nature are becoming an effective means of grabbing attention of the people involved. It is much more effective that "changing the system from the inside" because it allows people who don't want to be politicians, executives, etc to shake things up. It is also is exponentially more effective than just being a pain in the ass.
Now...if we could only figure out a way to limit the power of major players in the news business. Drudge Report. -
In other news....
I went to www.drudgereport.com shortly after reading this article on
/. Turns out this is a very common way to aggravate your opposition. A news reporter ran a story about a government contractor involved with creating a database on all citizens that included name/phone number/address/relatives address and criminal history. -
CompetitionBut Time Inc. has concluded that its free Web sites hurt circulation and Web-based advertising is too meager to make up the difference.
Maybe what has really hurt Time is that it has a lot more competition on the news stand these days coupled with the growing distrust of large media conglomerates. The web is also a source of competition with the "traditional" news outlets in that anyone with the time and willingness, ala Matt Drudge, can provide content.
I just really do not see how further restricitng your audience to that of a dying company is going to help you out. Maybe this will see the final demise of AOL and Time Warner.

Spammer pic: Same guy? Twins? Cousins?
The picture of the spammer (at the CBS news article) looks strikingly similar to the Drudge Report picture Anthony Pellicano, a top hollywood PI caught with military C4 explosives in his safe and entangled in a Steven Segal/NYTimes reporter extortion case.
So the spammer is a crook in his other double life, too! ;)

Banana republicans run amok!
Two years after Jeb Bush stole the election for his brother, and now he's blatently at it again! I can't believe how bald-faced this guy is in rigging the election! He makes it look like the South Florida voters are to senile and stupid to cast their votes. The only thing they've done wrong is not to run this bozo out of the state on a rail!

Re:Slashdot and Speed Step?
I think it is the reverse
/. effect since Drudge linked back to /. on the article about Doom III being linked. -
OT: Why Slashdot is so slow today
I think it is because Drudge is linking to the Doom III story.

Re:what do you mean by leaked?
The leak wasn't a very serious leak, despite the Drudge Report's alarmist headline, which reads "The most anticipated game in history: Doom III by ID Software has been compromised after an Alpha version was leaked... " [The link on their page actually points to this thread.]
Basically, an alpha version containing 3 levels, got out. This is far from the whole game, and the game certainly wasn't 'compromised.' Now, on to my point... ;) I think this leak is a 'good' leak that was not done on purpose. It serves as a great demo and is certainly no more harmful than the full blown warezed copies that are sure to follow.

Drudge hasnt "slipped into obscurity". He has a radio show on Sunday nights, and over 4 million hits to his web site every day. -
validity of the Drudge ReportPersonally, I would seriously question the validity of anything coming from the Drudge Report. I'm not sure if anyone remembers or not, but four and a half years ago Matt Drudge first gained notoriety by breaking the Monica Lewinsky story. Treated as the first Internet celebrity, he was then hired by Fox News to host his own talk show and was subsequently fired two years later after walking out when Fox wouldn't let him show a photo of a 21-week old fetus on the air. Since then, he's sort of slipped into obscurity after the whole dot-com bubble burst. (He was also sued by then-White House aide Sidney Blumenthal after posting a story that claimed Blumenthal beat his wife; Drudge later retracted the story and apologized.)
Next time, before everyone spends a lot of time and energy debating the morality of copyright laws and the hypocrisy of Hollywood and the MPAA, we should probably take a look at the source of the article to determine how seriously we should take it (even though that's not as much fun).
