Re:Where's my Open Source DNA Sequencer!Sequencers are already available on Ebay and the public sequence data are available from The national center for Biotechnology Information.
The cost of sequencing and data analysis is actually quite low, and all publically funded (NSF/NIH) data should be made available to the public.
The best way to make sure that this data remains open source is to increase funding to national granting agencies like the National Science Foundation and the NIH.

Re:Has the must get factor
This thing is gonna sell out(if hasn't already) this holiday.
Best buy
EB games
Amazon.com
toysrus
Wal-mart.com
All out of stock... Lik-sang and circuit city neglected to put out of stock notices on their respective webpages, but I'm sure they are too ;)
(they had will ship when available notices still)
Also to note, cnet's shopper couldn't find an in-stock DS, Fry's Outpost.com doesn't even have a DS entry on it's site, and if you absolutely must have one shipped out the current high bid for one on e-bay is $207.50 Only a $50 premium ;) better hurry auction ends in an hour and there is only 1 other DS auction on e-bay right now (no, it's not my auction but hey, you can't buy these things anywhere so some e-bayer might as well make some quick dough ;) -

lots of different options..
Trusty 'ol HandyBoard
68HC12
Lego Mindstorm
8051 development board
Good 'ol Parallax
There are also chips/development boards from Microchip (manufacturers of PIC series of ucontrollers) and Atmel.
Most of the above DO NOT come with motors, sensors, base, wheels etc. However, these are not difficult to find at a nearby hobby shop.
For a little more challenge, get a DSP board (TI, Motorola, Analog devices etc). You can get a good new/used one for pretty cheap from eBay -
Re:Firefox & Thunderbird
Been there done that. Caused more problems than it created. Not that my parents aren't able to do everything they need to do currently, they are quite proficient. But there are other common programs that are still IE dependent. For example, Turbo Lister.
I installed Firefox on my Mom's machine after Homeland Security's announcement recommending switching to alternative browsers from IE. She had major problems getting Turbo Lister to run correctly and apparently it was a known incompatibility. So I uninstalled Firefox and then Turbo Lister has worked fine since. -

Re:Sorry...
Continuing the off-topic trend, you can get a HDTV 3 color (also known as "component") video out for your Gamecube. Holding down the "B" button when you start a game will give you the option (if the game supports it) of 480p output. It does make a noticable difference.
As for a component-capable A/V switch, I recently bought a Audio Authority 1154 HDTV Component Video Switcher. It is just great. Sadly it only has four inputs, and a single output, but it also switches optical digital, coax digital and RCA stereo sound. All automatically. Not a bad unit.
I'm not the seller, and am not affiliated with the company in any way. I just like the product. -

Just get a real DLP projector from Ebay...Given that real, good LCD/DLP projectors are available on ebay for similar or slightly higher $$$, e.g.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cat
e gory=41842&item=5133694753&rd=1(an Infocus LP330/335 for $450), I don't see the point of this project.
For example the LP335 is a decent, 2000 real output lumen (not maybe 3500 lumen going into an LCD panel, who knows what comes out), with XGA resolution, fancy video processing that can accept NTCS, S-Video, DVI, VGA), with a built-in line doubler, ZOOM lens, HDTV compatibility, in a nice 6lb package. The DLP will have fairly decent contrast.
The overhead+LCD will have numerous problems, like 1) huge light leakage, which will cut viewing contrast tremendously, 2) cannot be driven by NTCS/S-video without extra stuff and no linedoubler, 3) noisy fan on the overhead, 4) no zoom lens to match screen size/distance, 5) fragile "construction" in an unwieldy "package".

Re:Yeah, right...I dunno what they go for on eBay, but were they ever really $10k?? I thought they were more along the lines of $2-5k... and I should know.
;-)... maybe the dual-color-cubes could get up to $10k??Some guy on ebay is selling an empty cube, though, and it's already up to $78.
I bought my NeXT slab, monitor and laser printer for $150 or so from a coworker a few years ago...
No working systems are on ebay, though ( mine works ). And there seems to be some weird thing where these machines don't have their logos attached, what's that all about?
Anyway, NeXT had stopped making those boxes long before 1996 ( it was more like 1992-1993 that happened ), it's likely that a lot of folks at NeXT were using NeXTStep for Intel by 1996... now, where did I put my copy of NeXTStep for Intel?? Darn it...

Re:Lego having a rough year
They don't make a "big bucket of generic lego" anymore, at least I can't find it at Toys'R'Us.
You should look and/or call around more. For example, Lego item 4496 is a 1000-piece bucket of nonspecialized blocks:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000 284YR0/ -- Amazon/Toys R Us -- $14.99

(well because adaptec scsi devices are so expensive)
You've got to be kidding! That and I'm buying scsi disks at about $50 for 36Gb now. Get an 80p-68p converter and take advantage of all the surplus raid drives out there. -
Someone slap the submitter.
It's not easy for me to 'let go' of that vintage (circa 1978) Magnavox Odyssey2, or toss my Atari 7800 in the closet because I don't have a power supply.
Well, you sure make it sound easy. The effort it takes to go to Ebay and buy one must be overwhelming. -

eBay always provides...
The GCE/MB Vectrex (June, 1982) -- the only video game system I really wanted as a kid, and one of the seeming few I've never encountered used in thrift stores. Bright vector graphics, built-in screen and a quality joystick gave it the same kind of appeal that the arcade-console versions of Asteroids and Battlezone had for me.

Re:$265?
I mean, they can't go to eBay and say "This was sold 4 days early! Trust me!"
Well, they can, because the box says "Limited Collector's Edition." I suppose there's some chance that the buyer actually IS a collector and the game will never be opened.More likely the $265 bidder is a personal assistant to some divorced bigwig who wants to make sure his son gets something better from him than from his ex.

Re:$265?

Just fix it yourselfHaving helped many people replace a faulty DVD drive on the XBOX, I can say with confidence that anyone with $32 and a couple of torx screwdrivers can easily get their Xbox going again.
Step one: Purchase a new replacement drive on eBay from this guy. (He always has an auction running, even though this one is about to end). Cost: $24 + $8 S+H
Step two: Open up your xbox (many tutorials available on xbox-scene.com)
Step three: Replace the drive. You'll also need to remove the front bezel of the old drive and put it on the new one.
Step four: put it back together again.Time for repair: 15 minutes.

Yes.
Yes, you can. But these may not be the kind of computer everyone will want. Regardless, they work, are at or below $100 (or were when link was made, boo for future-proofing), and don't have to be bought in bulk.
