why is bookmarking back now
I guess things like backflip are coming back, but this time the services are useful. For one thing del.icio.us and Flickr have shown that embracing the developer community makes sense.
I think for most people, me included, bookmarking is easier and often provides more useful information to others than blogging, there is clearly overlap.
Services such as Wists which is somewhere between Flickr and del.icio.us are an example of a bookmarking systems that are complimentary to del.icio.us allowing people to bookmark things such as gadgets, complete with thumbnail images.
Bookmarking is lazy blogging, but if someone is good at spotting things but not so good at writing I'd much rather read what excites someone via their bookmarks than wade through their blog postings. -

Tags in other sitesTags are a great way to organize pictures and other objects as well. Whether its porn, celebrities, or the soon to be launched cityflicker.com
Sure, you could go to google's image search, but where else can you easily see, for instance, celebrity nipples or this category?
Just looking at an object, and seeing other tags at the same time is extremely addictive. You can quickly jump to and fro within this kind of taxanomy with little effort. With certain experiments, we've seen a user stickyness not noticed before. And using RSS to monitor a tag is a great way to keep updated on content that you're really interested in.
While http://flickr.com/>flickr.com fantastic, it is pretty generic, I suspect we'll all see a large group of sites dedicated to tagging almost anything (books, products) that are more specific and open to finding a small but vocal niche of people.

since he is a megalomaniac...
Since George Lucas is a megalomaniac who likes to rewrite his movies years after release, I won't be seeing it in theatres. Seattle has one of the best theatres in the country where people dressed up for Star Wars (and lots of other movies, including LotR), but that still didn't convince me to go. If I do end up watching it, I'll wait until my family gets the DVD and then go watch it in a quiet, high-quality home theatre. I do miss the atmosphere of the Cinerama (no other theatres compare, which is why I don't go to other theatres anymore), but since this is a George Lucas bastardization, I can't pull myself to go.

You forgot Hipster PDAIn a recent reactionary wave to the hassles of PDAs there is the Hipster PDA
The Hipster PDA (Parietal Disgorgement Aid) is a fully extensible system for coordinating incoming and outgoing data for any aspect of your life and work. It scales brilliantly, degrades gracefully, supports optional categories and "beaming," and is configurable to an unlimited number of options. Best of all, the Hipster PDA fits into your hip pocket and costs practically nothing to purchase and maintain.
Weather-resistant. Drop-proof. Unlimited battery life. There's even a "docking station". -

This happened to me a week ago.
This very same thing happened to me a week ago. I documented the screenshots here and here (uploaded on May 1).
I had just installed Tiger 2 days prior, so I suspected a hole the operating system, as you can see by the title of the screenshots. That also prompted me to post a question (along with everything I had learned about what was happening) to Mac Rumors, to see if anyone had known anything at all about this at the time.
Again, this was in the morning Sunday, May 1. Everything I'm reading late last night and this morning seems to indicate that this is the first time anyone is seeing this happen. It's not. -

Remove the _t in th URL to get the full size picture. It's not very clear anyway, but it seems they have used a BSOD capture as a texture somewhere in the game.

Re:BSGThe city on Caprica in the pilot was Simon Fraser University.
SFU was used for all kinds of SF shows. It was the FBI headquarters on the X-Files, that always makes me chuckle. My favourite was watching it get pummeled by a Goa'uld bombardment in Stargate's season six.
Arthur Erickson is a well loved/despised modernist architect who plays with massive spaces. I have a friend who calls it archetorture. He gets to design some pretty trippy buildings and spaces.

Went to the supreme court this morning
I went to the supreme court this morning in hopes of being able to see the oral arguments for the case (I live in the DC area). Unfortunately, there was a huge line and I and many others didn't get in. I can report on what happened outside, though.
The pro-RIAA/MPAA/MGM protesters showed up first, at maybe 8:45am. They tried to go up on the steps leading to the court building, but police told them they needed to stay on the sidewalk. This group of folks then hung out for a little while with their signs (one which read "Thou shalt not steal. -God"), then some of them took out their guitars and started playing and singing.
Then at around 9am, the protesters from the Consumer Electronics Association showed up, with black shirts reading "Save Betamax" in white letters. They were met with a some cheers from some folks in the waiting lines as they left their bus and assembled on the sidewalk a little ways away from the rival protesters. They had more creative signs compared to the musician protesters. The interesting thing to note were different demographics of the two protesting groups. The musicians were mostly middle-aged white men. The electronics advocates were generally younger, and had more of a mix of genders and races.
The news media started showing up in full force at around 9:30, and took some interviews with various people, including folks from both protest groups, and random people (including a teenager from a school group). I saw cameras from NBC, ABC, Channel One and Reuters. The media seemed to be focusing a lot of attention on the musician protest group, as at least one of their members was always being interviewed. However, that might have had something to do with them having guitars and making music, which got them attention.
The crowd waiting to get in seemed to be either on the side of Grokster or ambivalent. I took some photos, which I'll put up on Flickr (tagged "Grokster" or something like that) or the dc metblog when I get home from work. -

Better Flickr link
The Flickr link in the story only links to one person's photoset (no disrespect to that person, w00kie). The Transparent Screens group pool is much more interesting as it aggregates everyones transparent screen photos.

NO MORE BULLSHIT FEATURES
Mod parent up.
Seriously. Why does a color screen become a feature? Yes, some people think that all they need is a color screen on their phone to be happy -- but there's nothing behind it.
I have to point people at things like Semacode, which is a really neat use for cameraphones -- it's a method of encoding a URL into a 2D barcode for printing. Shoot the barcode with your cameraphone, and the applet extracts it back into a URL for easy retrieval.
Also, you're right -- SMS is neat, but not neat enough to be a flagship product. We need data. I need to post my photos without paying my phone provider $.40 for each posting -- it's bullshit. -
Re:you think so?
Ugh, I did those links wrong and forgot to preview.
Sorry. Popular sites that use tags are http://flickr.com/ and http://del.icio.us/ -

I'm looking at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/isabellevandenberg/69 96328/
I can't find a link to the image URL next to the picture, nor can I see a URL to alternate sizes of the picture.
Do I need to disable Flash (and is there an easy way of doing so in Mozilla?) to see these links? -

Re:So will they finally get rid of that stupid thi
There is the "All Sizes" button above the photo or "Different Sizes" link at the lower right of the photo which allows you to choose 6 different sizes.
Example:
(75 x 75) Square
(100 x 67) Thumbnail
(240 x 160) Small
(500 x 333) Medium
(1024 x 683) Large
(3072 x 2048) Original -
Flickr is very cool and I hope it stays that way.
I'm a big fan of Flickr, which if you haven't heard of it, is a community-oriented photo-sharing service. Their photo-sharing API has enabled me to quickly assemble some nifty things such as this Colr Pickr and photo mosaics. However, I must admit I have mixed feelings about this acquisition, perhaps due my experiences in the late 90s, in which I found myself in a continual battle with new corporate overlords.
If you read the posts that founders Stewart and Caterina have been making in the Flickr Blog, and elsewhere, it's clear that they truly believe that this acquisition is for the best, and I don't doubt that both the Ludicorp folks and the Yahoo folks have the best of intentions.
Just as small children sometimes accidentally mistreat beloved pets, large groups of people with the best of intentions sometimes break things. Flickr currently has the feel of a 'mom & pop shop' and it is hard to believe that this state of affairs will continue with the influx of more money & extra management. But let's hope so! -

Examples of projects using the flickr APIThe flickr api is easy to use, here's a few examples of interesting projects people have come up with...
A Flickr World Map developed in php and flash by me (Mark Zeman).
The Flickr Graph which maps the social relationships between people by Marcos Weskamp.
A very playful Colrpickr that shows images by hue and luminosity by Jim Bumgardner.
There's more examples at Flickr Services

Re:Flickr has huge potentialfrom the tooting-own-horn dept.
As far as cross-platform, again not for me.
I don't think you looked too hard, unless you're using an obscenely unpopular platform.
Latest release of the Flickr::Upload module on CPAN includes a perl-Tk uploader. And a command-line uploader. There's a bunch of other (probably more complete) uploaders listed here.
Not official Flickr services, but one of the advantages of opening up the API is that other people can work out the support for the less mainstream users.
I do agree that the Flash thing is annoying. But you don't have to have Flash enabled to use the site. In fact, browsing Flickr is noticeably faster without a Flash plugin.

Re:Flickr has huge potential
Flickr uses Flash to display the photos, so you can add notes to them. Notes are litttle squares with text underneath, that render directly on the photo. Makes for great annotating. When the mouse is over the photo you see the squares, when the mouse leaves the picture, they fade away. See this and this.
Also, there is a Linux uploader for Flickr available here.
