Re:Practical applications
While it's intended market is for children, the applications this could be used in are astounding for all ages.

Re:Wow!
Does it strike you as odd that these people are putting millions of dollars into the most advanced visualization system currently known to man, and the best they can come up with is essentially a three-monitor spread? I realize that they are using a bunch of projectors to produce a complex image, but shouldn't we be reaching toward something more out of the ordinary, like our sci-fi writers have already visualized? When William Gibson wrote about virtual reality, Jaron Lanier and his contemporaries said, "That's a neat idea. We can do that." So, what's up here?

Where does it end?
While I am sure Segways for the mobility impared is a fine application of a great technology, it's worth looking at the ultimate end. Replacing human walking with Segway 'wheels' will lead to a natural atrophy of the ability to walk. And who needs it any way. The Segway and machines like it will become ever increasingly integrated into our physique over sucessive generations. Until Mercy? What is Mercy?

Star Trek: Voyager IntroIf you watch the intro sequence of ST: Voyager, you will notice that, during one of the scenes, the camera slowly cuts through the cryslline ice particles that make up the rings of Saturn. They put in a sound-effect to show what it would feel like. I always liked that sound. It was like being bathed by sounds of thousands little dusty bells tinkling.
You can (barely) hear it on this ST: Voyager Audio Clip . It occurs at time index 1:08.

Re:Things the Acorn RISC-OS had in 1995
Memories...
I grew up with an Acorn Electron (later moving to Ataris, then PC, then Mac). I always coveted my uncle's BBC Model B and later, his Acorn Archimedes.
Interestingly, these machines used the ARM for *everything*. And still managed to have quite a few great games... Nevryon, f'rex.
RISCOS (from what I remember) was a really intriguing OS. IIRC, it kept applications as "bang bundles" .... in much the same way as Mac OS X uses .app bundles. You could tell an application because its title started with a bang.... !Prefs, for instance.

Re:big, fat clue:
Well, why, it *is* possible indeed, according to the specs in the manual. If you bought a starship and both the manual and the ship dealer clearly state it can reach warp 8, you could sue them if it didn't.
Yes, warp 8 is possible, but not recommended, as the Federation imposed warp 4.7 as a limit for most ships, after Enterprise 1701-D encountered subspace ruptures in a highly travelled area of space in the Alpha Quadrant. If you travel faster than this, you can cause these ruptures - and get fined.
Maybe you find this and this interesting.

Re:Copyright?
Will the motor companies become the next RIAA when it is possible to make a perfect copy of any car? What will Coca-Cola say when I can nano-replicate coke from water and hydrocarbons?
They'll probably just say that your Coke tastes like Pepsi or something.
Seriously, I think exact duplication of an item will probably be a bit tricky, even with nanomanufacturing. Many
/. readers are probably familiar with Star Trek replicators, and the more anal among us probably remember that most replicators can't get foodstuffs perfectly right due to "resolution" limitations. It may just be their way to prevent replicating living beings, but it makes sense.Making an exact duplicate of a given object would require exact knowledge of that object's state - certainly down to the bonds between its atoms, possibly down to the spin of its electrons (or even smaller parts!) That oft-quoted Heisenberg uncertainty principle means that, once we get to that level, we won't be able to learn the exact state of an item. It probably doesn't matter for your Coke, but it might matter for the metallic structure of the can it's in. Duplicating the metallurgical qualities of a car's engine block, or the electric properties of a silicon chip, may be beyond what nanotech can do.
With that fact in mind, the manufacturers may still be able to produce a better product than your homemade knock-off. If that's true, than manufacturers won't be limited to making money off of patents, copyrights, and licensing.
(By the way, a very funny webcomic set in the 31st century, Schlock Mercenary, considered and dealt with this issue. I've linked a specific relevant strip here.)

Leonardo bike is first goat link ever! You sir are a genius! You discovered that Leonardo did not only design the first helicopter, the first car, the first flying machine. No, he also rose to fame by including the first "goat" link in his codex Atlanticus:
The drawing was hidden by collector Leoni because of the crude doodles of a walking penis with a tail, a hairy anus and a keyhole vagina on the same page.

Re:Gygax?
Which roleplaying games existed before 1974? AFAIK, the only rules you could find before that were for miniature wargamming, which is what D&D evolved out of. In fact, the very first edition (not AD&D, but rather the old 1974 booklets) had two distinct combat rules. You could use the old Chainmail rules, or the new D&D rules to run combats.
BTW, Dave Arneson is presumably responsible for the whole hit tables and negative armor class thing. He supposedly got that from an old naval wargame. He and Gary Gygax were buddies back then.
If you're genuinely curious about the whole story behind D&D (including the ugly, dirty side dealing with money and publishers), check out the Gary Gygax interview in the last couple issues of the OD&DITIES fanzine -
An older version of the Vader uniform
Wonder what an older version of the Darth Vader uniform will look like?
Something like this? -
Looks like the SeaCat
Heh, this is the same ship as the local passenger ferry here on the Isle of Man - the Seacat (There are actually two designs: the Seacat and the Seacat Rapide - see the photos here, here and here. To pull a quick excerpt from the above link:
"Built by InCat Australia for Sea Containers in Tasmania, SeaCat was the worlds' first vehicle-carrying catamaran. The original 74 metre craft have subsequently been joined by a new 81 metre length SeaCat design, also built by InCat."
Having travelled on the thing a few times I can confirm that it's fast (with a service speed of 35 knots), but in anything above a force five it "shudders/vibrates" and is rather uncomfortable - much more so than a monohull. Still, it gets you where you need to go and beats hitching on a trawler ;) -

Videos of it in useSince I'd never seen this thing in use I dug up some videos of it in use. The first two are quite low quality, the final one is a good quality. It still looks a little unstable on stairs but it does mean that a person in a wheelchair can go up and down stairs by themselves, which is definetly a good thing.

Re:Of Paramount Importance...
I suspect they're fried six ways from Sunday, to use the legal jargon. I was watching and counting rip-offs for amusement. Mind you, I think they did an excellent job recreating the original. Gene would be pleased. Truly difficult would be to count the novelties.
Humorless greedbag Paramount, on the other hand... 6 years ago they threatened a few dozen fan sites to drop their image and .wav collections in order to increase traffic to their for-profit official Trek site. (I assume they backed off?)
The rule is that derivative works are part of the original copyright. Some things like parodies are fiar use exceptions. Critically, the work need not mimic the original to nonetheless be derivative, rather it need only evoke the original in style or appearance or whatever. Here, the sight of the ship -- with music -- was more than enough. Even the door-slide effect sounds the same.
One of the tests is "substitution" -- could the new work displace demand for the original in the marketplace, or reduce the market for derivatives (such as by saturation)? Here, sure; they've basically produced a low-budget sequel, not that the original was high-budget.
Then there's trademark.... They could go to town here.
Disclaimer: I think the work is really cool, but wish they had applied their talents to either getting permission or coming up with new material. In case the lawyers come, I suggest the producers begin making their own Klingon® weaponry. -

gun bans have nothing to do with UK increase
Since the 15th century there has been what is known as a "duty to retreat" in England. The principle states that it is better to retreat from a potentially violent situation and have one's pride injured than to physically injure the other person. Unfortunately, this means that even if you are a victim of robbery, you have a duty to attempt to escape from the robber instead of trying to fight him. If you kill a robber or burglar in "self-defense" in England, you are charged with murder if you didn't retreat "at least to the wall at one's back." There used to be a "castle exception" to the retreat rule in England that states that a homeowner need not retreat when attacked in his own residence, but there now is no castle exception in England. This is evidenced by the total prohibition of the carrying of offensive weapons in England in 1953. Offensive meaning the opposite of defensive. This includes practically anything, certainly a pocketknife, dirk, or dagger, truncheon, axe, tomahawk, etc. England does not condone the use of weapons to ward off attackers. Therefore, anyone who carries a concealed pistol or revolver is certainly not justified in brandishing or shooting someone who robs him in England.
In this great country of ours (USA), there is no duty to retreat in most jurisdictions. However, some jurisdictions, notably some New England states, do require retreat when possible and retain the castle exception. One example of a very violence-friendly law is California, which states that deadly force may be used in defense of oneself or others anywhere, at anytime, when the victim reasonably believes that deadly force is necessary to avoid death, serious bodily injury, or the commission of any violent felony by the perpetrator. In practice, this may prevent criminals from robbing people as they know they could be shot and killed legally. Certainly this suggests that the "wave of violent crime" in the UK is not the result of a gun ban, but is partially the result of a centuries-old rule that favors violent criminals.
What people should be saying is that there is a public policy interest in not having a retreat rule and in not prosecuting people who kill in self-defense, so that criminals will actually be afraid of getting hurt when they rob people. Make sense?
