Too bad Gateway is already..
fucked anyway. They have been losing boatloads of money on the slumping demand for computers. While AMD can hopefully shore itself up and keep forging ahead, I can't help but suspecting that Gateway is going to the happy tech company hunting grounds in the sky pretty soon.

Re:The nerve of these geeks...There was that article on F**cked Company and here on Slash about the guy who sent out the memo detailing his rage at people who were only putting in 40 hrs a week on the job.
I think you're talking about this.

Neil Diamond's "America"
One of the songs on the Clear Channel's "banned" list is Neil Diamond's America
This makes no sense at all. If anything, this song is probably one of the greatest ones to speak of this country. I would honestly say it is an extremely patriotic song. Excluding this song doesn't make any sense. Unless Clear Channel wants to exclude any reference at all to anyone riding a plane or coming to this country. In any case, if anything, excluding this song is counterproductive. -

Who would by a cd you can't play in a CD player?Gee, I see this company making a lot of money, selling CD's that don't conform to RedBook audio standards. *snicker* Hey, in America, people are perfectly free to form bad companies with wacky ideas like CD's that only work in computers and require personal information. And we're perfectly free to laugh at them on Slashdot.
Suing is trivial, since the cost of a CD is negligible compared to that of a lawsuit.
However, the company is committing a fraud by marketing a device in stores next to redbook-CDs, not stating that it *ISN'T* of the same standard. The personal information part of it doesn't bother me, it's the fact they didn't state the restrictions. If they said, in a little box in the lower righthand corner, the restrictions, on the outside of the jewel case, then fine. let them do that. Just watch them appear on fuckedcompany next week.

sounds like a job for www.fuckedcompany.com
Get ready for more HP articles at www.fuckedcompany.com. This is going to push HP over the cliff.
On a related note, and this is dead serious, there is a Slashdot article on fuckedcompany right now. They say the following is FALSE:
Apparently Slashdot website creator, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, was rushed to the hospital this afternoon after having his penis cut off."
Very odd. No. I didn't make this up. Follow the link. -
different kinds of geeksNow, those same geeks are complaining ON THOSE VERY SAME VENTURE CAPITALISTS?!?!
Nope, there are, in fact, different kinds of geeks. There are the clueless geeks who think that they can make a quick buck by developing big sounding technology with expensive tools and on impossible deadlines. Sometimes they get lucky, but more often, they get f*cked.
Clueful geeks never participated in this game. They work steady jobs, save money, run small consulting business, and generally are having a much better time. If a VC contacts them, they just politely refuse.
You don't need millions of dollars in order to be happy. Engineering and software development is a decent way to make a living, and you can be quite well off without ruining your health on startup dreams.
Oh, as for the open source startups, the VCs that invested in them were fools. But if VCs are going to waste their money, they might as well waste it on something that contributes to the common good. I suspect many engineers working for such companies weren't dreaming on getting rich but just liked the idea of creating open source software fulltime. (Support of open source by companies like Sun and IBM, on the other hand, makes business sense for them.)

Re:Screw LinuxIt's a real shame that the cowards such as yourself find great fun wasting your time poking sticks into the mouth of an angry animal.
There is no limit to the examples we can give to display the value to Linux in today's corporate America. Every major software vendor (including microsoft) recognize the value, and are making software for the platform. While I know I'm wasting my time, please indulge me as I poke holes in your TROLL/FLAMEBAIT post.
the outlook looks bleak - Look again. I can name 10 companies, 3 of which I know you heard of, that have implemented (successfully) Linux as the primary OS for the entire corporation this quarter.
No longer buffeted by the heady currents of the internet gold rush - I assure you that if you look around, you will find that EVERY internet based business (again including Microsoft) are feeling the affects of the post 'gold rush' economy.
Linux-based companies - which have never made any appreciable amount of money lets compare the number of Linux based companies that showed up on fuckedcompany.com with the number of Wintel based businesses. !!Oh look!! Not saprisingly, they are strangly similar.
appear to have reached their darkest hour yet - okay, I guess you need to eat more carrots.
Just as the markets have started to recognize the absurdity of valuing web sites with no apparent means of making money at billions of dollars, and are instead examining the underlying worth of companies, they are also recognizing that companies required by their underlying philosophy to give their product away, do not have significant revenue opportunities. - okay, and your point is? let me break this out a little for you... you have two companies, one that runs Linux, and one that runs Microsoft software. Both are equal in every other way. Both start with the same amount of funding. Both run out of said funding. Bottom line is that the Linux company spent $0 on OS licensee.
As a result, the development of the user interface (the most important part of a system) of open source products - without a cent to spend on research - relies on ideas stolen directly from Windows. - the correct way to respond to this is to not, but the next best thing I can think of is something like this...
1) stolen ??? - you mean like M$ did you apple, visa vi Xerox? Or do you mean stolen as in how microsoft is trying to steal market share from AOL, or any other media/content provider?
2) Have you heard of a little technology called X11? please read up on it. I think you will find that it's past has very little to do with micro$oft
I know the AC that posted that will never read this. And anybody that might agree with me, could easily say it better, but I feel better now.
I don't hate Microsoft, but... never mind. -

Re:Saw This on a Slashdot Banner Ad!Would you buy a support product from a company that won't be around in 18 months?
Well maybe you would, but most people wouldn't.
And I'm sorry, there's something a bit shady about VA Linux. Look up the investor lawsuits that have been filed against them and you'll see what I mean. Now they are looking to burn about 80 million before they inevitably die. Really they should give that to their stockholders now and give up as honorably as possible.
Its too bad they are so fucked, because /. is a great site. I hope VA doesn't take Slashdot down with it. -
X-box MAME is not going to happen for a while..
There's no point in raving about this until somebody develops an alternative to the official Microsoft X-box developers' kit. Under the developers' kit license, there is simply no way Otaku could release his port of MAME to the world. Probably the company he works for wouldn't like to see their expensive and NDA-affected devkit being used in such a manner either.
The MAME open source license -- although not GPL (but comparable) -- also requires the release of all port-relevant source code, which I very much believe Microsoft's X-box developers' kit license forbids even if he was able to release it in binary form. Hint: You do not want to get into trouble with the MAME mafia by forgetting the release of source code.
Not to mention that MAME can already be considered as a violation of DMCA in terms of the decryption algorithms that are in the source code, so the less attention there is from big companies, the better.
Besides, X-box is beginning to be underpowered in MAME's case. You can get a cheap Duron setup for a MAME cabinet for much less effort and pain than getting an X-box -- with the force-bundled games worth of hundreds of dollars -- and waiting for a MAME port to get released, which really is not going to happen for a while. Microsoft has gone to some lengths to prevent homebrewn stuff, for example by changing APIs and executable file formats.
Since we're still on-topic, I see mame.net just added a nice MAME development history chart which makes for a good Windows and/or Linux background too. Enjoy. -

Is this Slashdot, or FuckedCompany? An obscene amount of Page 1 news on
/. is YADILB - Yet Another ISP Bankruptcy.
This is getting old, and with all the great, obscure stuff relegated to other Sections, and therefore never getting nearly the exposure they deserve, stuff is getting overlooked in favor of this type of pedantic shit.
Surprise, surprise, ISPs are going bankrupt. This isn't a matter which has a whole lot of avenues for discussion. We can talk and talk about the Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda game all day, but in the end, it's same old, same old.
A year ago, Taco finally began posting stories when the shit hit the fan for all the Linux businesses, but only did so after bitching that /. Wasn't a Financial News Site, so HERE IT IS, QUIT BITCHING. Now we're on the opposite end of this.

You have learn to use an AeronI've been sitting on one since the beginning of June and to be perfectly honest you have to spend a pretty large amount of time learning how to use it. I spent a lot of time fiddling around, reading the documentation and trying different configs until I found the one that worked best for me. Sound like a familiar concept?
This is the best chair I have ever sat on. My Office Depot $150 special at home that I used to love, I can barely stand.
F*cked company sells a mousepad that sums up my opinion quite handily.

Ad-blocking technology can be badAs much as we all love our PVRs and Junkbuster proxies, the problem is that many content producers' revenue models are built with the assumption that most of the users will be viewing advertisements. That means that each time they notice ad viewings or response rates declining, the price of content goes up. In meatspace, this means your cable bill goes up at twice the rate of inflation (sound familiar, folks?). On the Internet, this means that more and more advertising-supported businesses fail.
What is the solution? Well, the ideal mix of users includes a large majority who view the ads, and a small minority (this usually turns out to be the technically-inclined Slashdot crowd) who knows how to avoid them. Keep this mix, and everything is great for both groups. Let the balance get out of hand, and the result will disappoint us all.
The rise of PVRs can improve our enjoyment of TV, or it can destroy the content providers. And at this point, it could go either way.

Re:I disagree. It takes good programmers
I think the reason for the poor code lies more in the shortened development cycle than anything else. The eXtreme camp would say refactor, but usually the conditions that caused the shortened cycle in the first place mean you can't go back. If the conditions are caused by poor project management, that is one thing. Often though, they are brought about as the only means for survival.
Maybe we should just stick with safe languages?
I also take exception with the comp-sci dig =). I think a good comp-sci curricula leads to LESS slipshod code. I've seen too many people reinvent the wheel (poorly) because they didn't understand basic computer science concepts and design. The teaching of which is the goal of the very first class in the curriculum. -
Re:Doesn't the DMCA specifically protect this? The sale of alcohol in whatever county Lynchburg is situated is illegal, hence the popular rumors.
So how are the JD guys making any money if they can't sell their hooch? Give it away and hope to make it up on volume? Sounds like the business plan of the average fucked company to me.

Re:Simple!
Why is it that we expect

It's up to them. They exist and they are interesting, so we come and contribute our time and attention. God bless 'em if they can how to leverage that into cash. -
WebVan has been doomed
It looks like WebVan has been doomed to failure for months, thanks to their CEO (who gets out with a measly $375k a year).

Other services, same issues
I'm a former ReFlex customer and I have one of their little boxes, a Tut Systems LR100T but it's not really DSL, it's proprietary. I don't really have much use for it, but then again it might be worth something to someone.
Also, the apartment complexes where they installed the services have (I understand) a pretty setup in a rack somewhere on the property. Anyone know what happened to that?
There's a nice little thread a FuckedCompany -
New-New-Nano EconomyYou know, I really wonder what the public will think of nanotech once its huge implications hit the mainstream head-on -- in the same way that the public now "understands" Artificial Intelligence thanks to the movies. Dateline to the rescue! *grin*
Will Foresight succeed in educating people, or will the public inflate nanotech companies with their hopes and dreams, in the same way as biotech/internet companies, expecting another [stock appreciation] revolution in a "new-new economy?" Of course, we'll get the revolution [of abundance], but I wonder how long it will take people to figure out that there will be even more FuckedCompany's when it finally sinks in what it means to be able to manipulate matter with the same ease as bits of data.
...and we all know how easy it's been to convince the public that artificial digital scarcity is a good thing, right? But, without real material scarcity, there's no motivation to try and rationalize the sale of intangibles in order to pay for once scarce tangibles.Give me some molecules, some sunlight, a molecular blueprint, the magic nano bootstrap process, and I'm in business!.........unless someone claims a monopoly on atoms or sunlight that is.

Recouping costsIf you gain only a few pieces of good information from the book, you'll probably recoup the $20 price of the book in short order.
If you are even thinking about $20 then going the contracting route probably won't work out.
I'm not saying that the key to successful business is throwing money away, but just that if you remain focused on $20 then that's all your likely to see.
Specifically, taxes, incorporating, contract law and such should not be done on the basis of a book, even a good one. Spend a couple thousand a year on a good accountant/lawyer (and if you can find a lawyer who is a CPA like mine, then I highly recommend keeping all your business with him).
The other single salient suggestion I have is do as much as you can on barter. If you need a couple boxen for your new lab and your client is a PC shop that needs some wiring hung and a T1 installed then why bother with the cash and associated accounting.

Seriously. There was so much crap in the market that burned through so many investors' dollars it was scary.
Warren Buffett said it correctly: many of these "bubble companies" were designed to make money off investors, not for them. Serves them right that they're toast.

Enough AlreadySweet zombie Jesus, if I didn't know better I'd suspect the sudden spike of anti-Microsoft articles was Taco and Hemo's way of diverting attention away from the farcical downtime and yet another VA appearance on FuckedCompany.
Guys, Netscape already tried to recover stock price and marketshare by attacking Microsoft instead of creating quality product of their own. It didn't work.
PS. God bless run-on sentances.

So long ditto.comI'm about to submit Ditto.com to f'd company, since that's the only thing I (or anybody else I know) have used them for.
As fast as Google is (even under the slashdot effect), I think I just visited Ditto for the last time.

ummm
Slashdot should be unaffected.
Riiiiiight. Now is this what you think, or what they're telling you? Cause I had the CEO of the company stand in front of the entire Corporate office and say that we had enough money to last us till at least June (this was in March). Then this happened. In March. March is a bit before June.
The PHBs always tell you that the company will be fine. Could you imagine if they said otherwise? ;)

That has already been done. You can read all about it over at Fucked Company. -
Fuckedcompany reports on impending VA Linux lay-ofI know this'll do hell to my karma but I submitted this and (surprising) it wasn't published. Fuckedcompany is currently reporting impending VA Linux lay-offs. Anyone want to hazard a guess who from Slashdot is getting axed? Whenever a parent company needs to trim the fat they hit editorial depts. Trust me on this; I experienced it first-hand at CBS Healthwatch.

Woohoo, points for me
I'm going to submit them to www.fuckedcompany.com.
Should be in the hall of fame soon. -
HAHAHHAHA!
Where in the hell did you pull this from? Rush?
Look around you, dude. Net sites are failing left and right and it has nothing to do with people "loosing interest in liberalism". It has everything to do with not making money! Ever been to Fucked Company? Read over just 10 of the FCs - they are mostly stupid ideas in the first place, such as the ever popular breakfastcereal.com - the breakfast cereal portal! Imagine, if you will, Yahoo! with nothing but breakfast cereal. Like I am going to make THAT my home page. And the guy who started that winner of an idea got VC for it.
This has nothing, zero, zilch, to do with us having an idiot president getting his marching orders from the religious right and big business. These sites are failing for a reason: they are poorly run from the outset, have burned through all their VC by buying Aeron chairs for everyone and their dog, and then are left wondering why nobody clicks on the banner ads.
