Re:I modded my xbox...
I recommend this Real Arcade Controller. The xbox specific version of it only runs $35 there and works great in Mameox.

come out from under that rock, grand theft auto 3 and grand theft auto vice city were released for xbox months and months ago here

Re:Free windows games
I just bought a brand new, never been used copy of F-Zero GX for just $20. Seems like it's been about a year since it came out, too.

Try used games
Companies like Game Stop allow people to buy/sell/trade used games. If $60 to $50 is too much, look for a slightly used version in one of their stores or on their web site. Many people buy the game new, and then cannot play it, or find it wasn't what it was advertised as, etc and then sell it. Also check Half.com for used copies of games and other things.

Re:easy choice
sweet. it was 'game of the month' for March 2004 and so I guess missing it by a month isn't too bad. thanks for the heads up, looks like a pretty good GBA game.
unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available at either Best Buy or Circuit City... or EB Games...
In fact, the publisher, Destination Software lists it in their "Coming Soon!" section. So this is less of a "miss" by me, and more of a "they aren't even selling it yet" by them.
But huzzah! The Wade Hixton game website links directly to the Game Stop product page, so yes, it can be bought! (Strange that the "EB Games" link takes you to the GameStop page...
At $19.99 I'm definitely picking this up! -
Re:Blizzard games? A failure?
Commander Keen was ported to the GameBoy Color very shortly before the GameBoy Advance was released. Just get that to use in your GBA.
Yup, here it is: Commander Keen for GB.
Looks like Duke Nukem (the side-scroller) was also released on the GB.
Interestingly enough, you can also find DOOM and DOOM II for GBA. Some reviews indicate that DOOM/GBA was a pretty good game (basically identical to the DOS version, missing a few levels.)

Re:So what?
For you Americans out there in cyberland, Duke Nukem Forever will ship on 1 December 2005. Oh wait, maybe it's 14 November 2004.
Just be glad you don't live in New Zealand, where it won't ship until 31 December 2006 .
Sincerely,

Re:wireless?
Gamestop sells something similar. I've seen it in their brick and mortar stores as well.
-
Um, try the Logitech conrtoller.
I must first admit that I haven't paid much attention to any wireless controllers for the PS2 that have come out since.
But check out Logitech's Wireless PS2 Controller. Its uses the 2.4ghz spectrum, not infra-red. My receiver for the unit is always behind the 1/2" oak doors of my entertainment center. The reach is more than sufficient.
In fact, here's a quick little review:
It comes with all the features of your standard ps2 controller -- same button config, vibrations, and analog/digital controls. The controller itself is slightly larger than the normal ps2 controllers, and once in your hands feels horribly large and heavy (due to the 4 AA batteries in it). But you get accustomed to it pretty quick. In fact, because its wireless, its more or less all I use now. Its shape is slightly more open than the ps2, as well.. it kinda feels more comfortable to me now.
The fact that it uses 2.4ghz instead of 900 mhz makes a HELL of a difference in lag (push button, a second later something happens). I refused to buy a wireless controller (such as the Mad Catz controller) until something came out running at least at 2.4g. That said, there is still some lag. Nothing as bad as the 900mhz controllers I've tried, but laying fighters like DoA, Guilty Gear, etc will bring notice to the slight lapse immediately. Rythym games, some racers, and anythign else requiring spot-on reflexes are also subject to the occasional problems. It really depends on the game. I can play Robotech: Battlecry with no noticeable lag, but I have issues in REZ. Fresh batteries can sometimes help.
For all other games, it works great. Your typical platformer's are fine. I've used mine all the way through half of the Legacy of Kain games, Jak and Daxter, Devil May Cry, etc without a hitch. RPG's, of course, are fine as well.
Don't let the advertised battery life (50 hours, for the lazy) fool you. That's with EVERYTHING turned off. Analog, and vibration, and assumes you are playing a lengthy-dialogued RPG. I've change my batteries at least 5 times this past year, with RPG's accounting for about half of the game time. Playing something that involves a lot of button mashing will obviously suck the life from the controller.
In fact, that's my biggest gripe. Why oh why Logitech couldn't put Lithiom Ion batteries in this thing, and give it a cradle to recharge in every day is beyond me. Wouldn't that be perfect? Just like your modern day cordless phones. Again, playing with a fresh set of batteries makes all the difference. I know switching them out 5 or so times a year doesn't seem like much, but that's only because I am cheap and sacrifice some lag on the controller response for extra battery life. I also NEVER have the vibration turned on (I don't miss it much, but if it were fully charged every day via a cradle, it would definitely be on). Its really just a nuisance.
Mind you, keeping an eye on your battery life is no where near as annoying as cables everywhere.
I just wish I could find something as good for my beloved Dreamcast, whose controllers cables are the shortest in the world. -

Inexpensive
Holy crap! Over 500 bucks for a videocard! I don't care what kind of graphics I'll get; I'm sticking with my good old PS2 and Super Nintendo and use the money that I'll save on beer.

Re:Super SF2 Turbo on Super NES?
There was a Super SF2 and a SF2 Turbo on SNES.
Super SF2 included a "Turbo" mode and 4 new fighters like Cammy, the bruce lee rip off, T. Hawk, and that one jamaican kickboxer guy.
Check it out. -
action shooter
Check out the shooter Blowout. Brand new value title game for $10 for ps2 and $20 for xbox. Gamecube release coming soon as well. I was on the development team that made it.
Contra-like action with metroid/castlevania style levels. -
Re:Useless
The shmucks stole the device but not the software? Whatever country tries to reverse engineer this thing is going to have a bitch trying to control it.
Not really. Flying a helicopter drone by remote control isn't that hard.
:-) -
Re:Game reviews are really off center
Also, I'd like to see a review site with more on 3rd party budget games, ones that cost 9.99, kid games, educational, more complete, and links to buy
Try Blowout. Its only $9.99 for ps2. Its pretty cool, especially for the price. Be warned though - I'm a little biased because I was one of the developers. -
Probably not a rumor
GameInformer.com has a rumor (via unconfirmed sources)

Re:What else is new
Viewtiful Joe is Capcom, not Sega. It's also planned to cost the full $50 - not that that should deter you from a purchase.
However, the Sega games, including Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg and Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut are/will be $40.

Re:MS doesn't want DX on the PC to outshine the Xb
meanwhile, people were still developing Playstation 1 games long past the time when it was _obvious_ that the Playstation 1 was the three year old PC equivalent of what their grandmother is using.
"Were"? Try "are". By my count (based on GameStop's "coming soon" list), there are currently 12 titles coming soon. Most importantly, Final Fantasy 1 gets a makeover and Final Fantasy 2 japanese will finally make it to the US in Final Fantasy Origins. And considering that the PS2 has decent PS1 backwards compatibility, it's not a bad idea for game developers to still make PS1 games (budget titles, children's titles, titles that don't need the flash of PS2-level graphics).
By contrast, there are no Nintendo 64 titles, Dreamcast titles, or Gameboy titles still in development. As much as I prefer the XBox to the Playstation 2, Sony apparently did something right with the Playstation 1 if titles are still in development for it.

Yet more thanks...Yeah, I'll go search for a copy. Ebay only has some macs versions. EBGames has MOO2 for ten bucks, although it's jewel case only. (BTW, EBgames also has MOO3 for pre-order. Ships 2/25.) Dig those system requirements, too. I haven't seen a game mention Hayes-compatible modems or IPX in a long time.
Gamestop has MOO2 for ten dollars as well. Doesn't say whether it's jewel case or not.
I went and grabbed MOO1. Only got 5.1KB/sec. Still only took a couple minutes...

Re:In defense of RedOctane.Instead of bothering yourself to hassle Funco with when they get a game in stock you can always try the used game sites on the web.
Half.com
Amazon.com
Ebay.com
GameRankings.com
UsedGames.com
Recycle-Video-Games.com
ABC-VideoGames.com
Heck Gamestop even has their own site . You can always try on their site instead of going to the store. I am not sure if they have a fully integrated web site and brick and mortor store. If they don't they should hire me to fix that! :) -
Re:Why ?
I am still trying to buy the original quake version, but cannot seem to find it in any stores. Anyone know of any stores still selling it?
Ultimate Quake includes Q1, Q2, and Q3a. Maybe it's a waste of money if you already have Q2 or Q3a separately, but $30 isn't bad, and it's the only way I've seen lately to get Q1.
Actually, nevermind -- I just checked id's site, and you can buy Quake 1 by itself for $30 (as a download, you get no official media). At that price, you'd be better off picking up Ultimate Quake and giving away the Q2 and Q3a disks if you don't need them. For the same $30, you actually get the games on CD.

Sheesh
What's their next "port" going to be?
Deer Hunter? Then Big Game Hunter and Who Wants to be a Millionare.
Why not work on being more compatible with more popular games? I see a lot of games on the list at level 4, but what does that mean really?
To find out I have to make sure that my video driver are up to date (not a bad idea, but not a trivial task under Linux), then get Transgamings WineX installed (another unknown, do I have all of the libraries it needs and up to date?), THEN install the game and see if it works. If it doesn't, spend some more time making sure that I've covered all my bases (that belong to us) before I get replies to my cry for help like "Install the latest video drivers." or "Why would you want to play game X anyway?".
Compared to just keeping a Windows machine around for games (or a Console?) or dual booting.... dunno just seems like an awful lot of effort.
Uhm, this just in!! The entire Kohan series for Windows can be had for $15 more than any one of the Kohan for Linux titles from Transgaming. -
Price Drop Confirmed!
Gamestop has pretty much confirmed the price drop on their website. $199 for a new PS2, $169 for a used system with a free DVD.

Re:Dreamcast is Cheap, but not easy to find anymor
You can pick one up with very little effort from Gamestop.com ( http://www.gamestop.com/) They have several deals on used systems with 1 or more games starting around $69. As you mention - ebay works well too. If you're gonna hack it anyway, why buy new?

Stores were told....
a buddy of mine is the manager of The Game Stop (aka Babbages). he told us when we purchased ours (1st release day) that MS wanted all returns to go thourgh their contracted companies. His store (the most active store in Houston) was providing customers with this same info.
not sure what would happen if an angry customer came in and demanded a new unit within 30 days, but i do know he was told to refuse giving out his stock as replacements.
his MS rep told him there were two reasons for this:
1) giving out a new unit in exchange would lower the Xbox's launch sell total. MS was adamant that they would sell all 1.5 million units pre Dec 31st.
2) MS wanted to be able to tightly manage returns - which it has greater control over when owners ship their defected units to centralized locations.
sounds like the contracted company that MS chose sucked. guess i was fortunate...mines been playing 3-5 hours a day for the whole time! :-)

Dreamcast VGA BoxI'm curious about this myself, as I don't have a TV...just two monitors...a pair of Trinitrons (17" and a used 15"). I can't tell you about other consoles, but I do know about the Dreamcast.
I got a Dreamcast a couple of months ago and Soul Calibur and Shenmue look and play just fine on both of them, thanks to my VGA box.
You might want to check GameStop and Electronics Boutique if they have stores near you. I got my DC used from GameStop when I used to work there (nice discount). A quick search of the Gamestop web site didn't turn up anything, but a search using "vga" as the search term at EB turned up 3 adapters for the Dreamcast, including the one I have (the one at the bottom).
Both stores carry used stuff, which might save you a few bucks. The GameStop return policy on Used items is better than on new ones! Someone at one of the stores might also have info about adaptors for other systems. At GameStop, if they don't have one in stock, ask them to do an "Availability Request". That will search all the stores to see who has one and get it sent to the store near you. That's how I got my DC VGA box.
As an aside, I also got a connector for my DC that lets you connect a Playstation/Saturn controller, as well as a standard PS/1 PC keyboard to the DC. Haven't used it yet, but it seems pretty cool. Only $4.99 used!
HTH,

Re:Cheaper than a GameBoy Advance!
And the same price as a SNES. And $10 more than a NES! All according to Gamestop.
Granted the 2 Nintendo systems have WAY more games, but when they're selling current software backed by the power of a Dreamcast for the price of 10+ year old hardware/software, you can't help but want to jump at the deal.

Re:Just to put things into perspective...
Does anyone seriously believe that Microsoft will put games consoles packages on the market costing $1200 and somehow (I don't know, you tell me) force X-Box buyers to buy them? The price given is clear FUD. I bet the reporter used the following formula: 1x X-Box $299 20x games Microsoft wants people to buy @ $45ea
Sometimes reporters do research their stories unlike many posters... Prices -
FYIHere's what one brick&mortar/online retailer is doing with regard to Xbox pre-orders:
The lowest level is 600 dollars, which seems a tad insane, even for the hardcore players who usually pre-order...
